Reunion scene
« on: Jan 28, 2006, 08:03 PM »
One thing that gets me on repeat viewings is that Jack is so embarressedwhen he meets Alma after the kissing, it's like "sorry mam but I am going to go jump your husbands bones", he is so stand offish.  Ennis seems oblivious on the other hand.

I think that Jack looks shocked...he cannot believe he has found his Ennis again, and they kissed, just outside the flat!!
Now he meets the wife, but can't wait to get Ennis to himself again!

I could just watch it over and over again..what a reunion! ;)

Yeah the look on Jack's face is classic at the end of the kissing, like "now you expect me to walk up and meet the wife?"  Imean Ennis is a "whoreson of bitch" isn't he?

But don't you just love the way Jack looks at Ennis when they break the kiss, and also how Ennis rubs his head against Jack's face, before tucking his shirt back in..and off to meet the wife...

It's really sweet, I love the shirt tucking, we have a thread about this somewhere else don't we?

One thing that gets me on repeat viewings is that Jack is so embarressedwhen he meets Alma after the kissing, it's like "sorry mam but I am going to go jump your husbands bones", he is so stand offish.  Ennis seems oblivious on the other hand.

Annie gives more details of this scene:

The door opened again a few inches and Alma stood in the narrow light.
What could he say? “Alma, this is Jack Twist. Jack, my wife, Alma.” His chest was heaving. He could smell Jack—the intensely familiar odor of cigarettes, musky sweat, and a faint sweetness like grass, and with it the rushing cold of the mountain... “You got a kid?” said Jack. His shaking hand grazed Ennis’s hand, electrical current snapped between them.
“Two little girls,” Ennis said. “Alma, Jr., and Francine. Love them to pieces.” Alma’s mouth twitched.
“I got a boy,” said Jack. “Eight months old. Tell you what, I married a cute little old Texas girl down in Childress—Lureen.” From the vibration of the floorboard on which they both stood Ennis could feel how hard Jack was shaking.

I love this writing, especially the electric current snapping between them, and Jack shaking so hard he vibrates the floor boards.  It makes me feel like I've never felt passion at all.

Reunion scene : an interesting observation
« Reply #7 on: Nov 13, 2010, 08:52 AM »
Hi ,

was watching BBM last night again after quite a while and has this observation which i cudnt wait but share with you in this forum.

After ennis comes down from the stairs, hugs jack and then when he looks around (just before pushing jack to the wall for the famous kiss) i guess everyone has noticed ennis's mischievous smile. i dont know exactly why i felt there was something very special about that mishievous smile and mischevous look in his eyes- something which was very much in contrast with the serious and passionate look in Jack - remember the way he was looking at ennis never breaking the glance, ennis was otherwise very passionate and serious and looked "in love" throughout the scene except for these moments where there was some kind of a "relaxed" element (and not much of the "causious" element - means "is anybody looking" sort of...)  - i dont know exactly what but something very "un- ennis". Ennis and mischief !!!  ??? ^*()was that heath and not ennis ? may be he ws feeling sort of "funny" while shooting this scene and this look escaped from his eyes and his smile ? was he looking at the film crew ? Ang Lee made him do that deliberately ?

Dear Haveacrush - I noticed the same thing, myself, about the awkwardness of that grin.  At the risk of seeming to detract from Heath's professionalism, I have to say, I thought he was messing with Jake, rather than signalling anything to Jack Twist.  The scene had been cordoned off and shielded, for privacy, but it had to have been very difficult for both of them. Am not sure how many takes there were, and if fatigue was involved.  But I have always thought it was, at least in part, a rare lapse on Heath  Ledger's part.  It fits by a stretch, maybe, but not for me. Anyway, that's two of us who noticed it.

I have noticed it too,but I have never attributed it to some Heath's lapsus...Not only because he had a great degree of professionalism, but because Ang is a perfectionist;enough as to make them repeat this scene several times,so I don't think he wanted to leave any kind of lapsus in the final result. Is it a little "un Ennis",as you say?.Yes,it is,but, maybe is not the whole scene in this way too?.I think it's one of the few times we can see a "bold" Ennis able to let himself be carried for his wishes and impulses. His face is rather mischievous, maybe only full with lust, not only when he looks around, but during the instants he takes Jack against the wall. For me,it's the face of a man who has before him his wishes object, the man he has been looking and longing for during four years,so he's more than overwhelmed with emotion...and some kind of emotions. In any case, not a Heath's fault, even if due to the times they had to repeat an awkward situation for both of them.
Ennis’s eyes gone bright with shock, mouth opening then closing again. “Love?” Ennis said finally, voice strangling in his throat.

Jack smiled sad. “Yeah, Ennis. Love.” Leaned forward and kissed Ennis’s temple, whispered, “What’d you think it was, all this time?”

I agree with MPJ. Ennis is not stone, at the reunion scene is shown with a total lack of inhibition, consistent when to have you in his arms what he wants most, his lover four years after, his one true love. I think both the Ennis's inhibition how Jack's uninhibited is a little overdone in the film. IMHO

Jake Gyllenhaal said that for him, the difficulty of the scene was not kissing Heath, but to show such variety of feelings in a few seconds.

I agree with MPJ and WildcatIsle too.
And don't forget how long Ennis was waiting for Jack's arrival, with so many beers and cigarettes, unable to do anything else. Just a long long time with only Jack in his head, just thinking about his memories, about how he missed him for 4 years and about what will happen when he will see him again, at last!
When you're waiting for someone this way, the feeling of joy is so strong, so exaggerated, that the meeting is as well...  :d)

(I hope my English words are right to explain my feeling...  :s) )

I feel despondent, stuck in limbo between past and future where what I have is what I’ve lost. Bobby & Dave, no word is strong enough to say how much I miss you.

I completely agree with MPJ too. I've also noticed some kind of a mischievous smile in Ennis's eyes, and this is how I explain it. He was so very happy to see his man, that he couldn't hide the smile, though always being so reserved and unemotional. And that smile broke the frost in his eyes and his look and sparkled in his face as if telling Jack: "I want you right now right here, but as I am so shy, let me just hit you against the wall and kiss you"  :cb:

You're right. One of the rare moments where Ennis is himself and acts in a logical and corresponding way.
Ennis’s eyes gone bright with shock, mouth opening then closing again. “Love?” Ennis said finally, voice strangling in his throat.

Jack smiled sad. “Yeah, Ennis. Love.” Leaned forward and kissed Ennis’s temple, whispered, “What’d you think it was, all this time?”

may be ... passion had really moved stoic ennis ... he shed his inhibitions for a few breif moments , imagine had he really maintained that un-ennisness and made some decisions that night !

Maybe he liked it, so decided to keep it in. Like the scene where Ennis is stripping off next to Jack, and Jack screws up opening the beans. That was accidental, but they kept it in :)

well that "accidental" or what-so-ever spilling of beans complemented the scene well .. adding on to jack's messed up mental state  ;) .... while in the reunion scene ennis's grin was a bit misfit .. a split second may be
Later, that dozy embrace solidified in his memory as the single moment of artless, charmed happiness in their separate and difficult lives. Nothing marred it, even the knowledge that Ennis would not then embrace him face to face because he did not want to see nor feel that it was Jack he held. And maybe, he thought, they'd never got much farther than that. Let be, let be.
