I really doubt that the DVD will be released in April 2006.

I says it on UK amazon, not the US page though unfortunately.  They probably aren't quite ready to let it out yet, it's still doing well here and hasn't even hit the second run theaters yet.

Video ETA (www.videoeta.com) is usually pretty accurate, and they're estimating a May release. Of course I hope it comes out sooner. I'm already trying to decide how many copies to buy. I figure at least 3 to start with, and probably one more later when I wear out the first one!  ;D

No, you might try amazon, they usually list dates as they know.

Post by: tpe on Feb 03, 2006, 09:05 AM
I spied in the iheartjake.com site that the release date for the BBM DVD is March 7 2006.  Can someone verify this?  Thanks!!!
Title: Re: DVD Release Dates
Post by: dirtbiker on Feb 03, 2006, 11:39 AM
I think more likely the release date would be in May (videoeta.com).  Canada/US usually has the same release date I think, since releases are region specific (Region 1 in US/Canada).  I doubt that UK would get it before we do.

Post by: ethan on Feb 03, 2006, 04:41 PM
I don't think the release date would be in March. But I'd like to see it released as soon as possible because there are already pirated version flooding around.

YAY!!!!  Videoeta.com revised their release date from May to April  4th  ;D

I little less than 2 months to wait (February is short)

Yeeeeaw!

I don't know what are Focus Features expectations for the DVD sales, they might get a big surprise!

However, I just had a sad tough about copyrights...

I bought a big bunch of previewed DVDs at the Blockbuster next to my place.

I paid 6.96$ CAN for Crash (6.05$ US, 5.05 EUR)

My bet is they don't get any penny from it, I'll go to Blockbuster's website and ask.

When you say overseas, where?  Are you aware there are two zones for DVDs?  Zone 1 is for Americas, zone 2 is for the rest of the world.  You can't play in Europe a DVD bought in Amerca and vice-versa, unless you have a multi-standards player.

I just reserved a copy at my local Suncoast Video Store (for April 4). Although the list they have doesn't list a "special edition", but I told them if there is one, that's the one I want.

In the meantime I will just have to survive by watching Jarhead - which is available on Tuesday.

Americas have a different DVD standard that is called Zone 1, Zone 2 is the rest of the World.  Multi standards players exist.  My sister, who lives in France have one.  If your from Zone 2, make sure your player is good before ordering a DVD from America.  Your heart would be broken and my heart would be broken too, knowing you have a broken heart.

I just got an e-mail from Wolfe Video, who also says that the DVD will be released on April 4th and they are accepting advance orders (at a good discount, too). They are even offering a free bandanna with each copy sold that has the "Brokeback Mountain" logo imprinted on it! I immediately ordered 3 copies from them.

I urge you to consider purchasing the DVD from Wolfe. They are a GLBT-owned-and-operated business and have always provided excellent pricing and service. In fact, in the past when I ordered the DVDs for Queer as Folk, the discs showed up on my doorstep ON THE RELEASE DATE, so I often had them before anyone else.

List price is $29.95; their pre-order price is $20.95 WITH the bandanna.

Here's the Link (http://www.wolfevideo.com/products.asp?R=460&id=1110)

(this also shows a photo of the bandanna)

The e-mail they sent me even had a great photo of the box, which says "Focus Features Four-Star Collection" in a banner across the top. Man, I can't WAIT for April 4th! (That will be the last day of my company's annual meeting, and this will be the best possible thing waiting for me when I get home after 5 grueling days of work!)

Just to dig into technical stuff, in case someone is interested - apologies for the tedious subject.

There are several different standards for videos. The main are NTSC and PAL. They have some slight difference in the size of the frame, and the frame rate (let's call it "speed" to simplify).
USA uses NTSC, Europe uses PAL. France had another format (SECAM) for VHS tapes but they are using PAL since the DVD format was introduced.

Now there are Regions. Regions are not format. They are codes written to the DVD to let it play on specific dvd-players.
DVDs have the ability to encode an option which specifies which regions in the world the discs can be played. The movie studios have collectively divided the planet earth into zones which corresponds to their distribution system.
The main reason for it is that a while ago the delay in the theatrical release dates between the US and Europe was quite big - and you had movies released on DVD in the States while they did not reach cinemas in Europe yet (this still happens sometimes, but more and more movies have a simultaneous worldwide release lately).
Also, some DVDs are regionally encoded for rights issues (companies have rights to publish some material in a specific country - without code and with internet shopping that would be a "worldwide release" instead).

Without regional code, US imported DVDs were appealing for European customers who wanted to get the movie straight to DVD and "skip" the theatrical release at once.
Regional codes do not allow you to do this - as you can basically play a US dvd on a player manufactured for the US market. DVD-rom players on pc have the same thing (but they let you switch between regions a certain nuber of times, then they stick to the last region you used).

Now, you can find region-free players, and you can also make a player region free with a small firmware upgrade (easy to do it yourself or at a pc/multimedia center - keep in mind you usually invalid your manufacturer's warrantly doing so).

Besides, the most part of DVD player play both NTSC and PAL discs. And so do the DVD-roms on pcs/mac.
The problem is all in the regional code - for example there are music videos released in the US that are NTSC and Region 0 - meaning that any player from any country will be able to read them.

Finally, there are a few weird cross cases. Japan has the same regional code of Europe (Region 2) but the same standard of the US (NTSC).

Region   Countries
0           No Region Coding
1           United States of America, Canada
2           Europe, including France, Greece, Turkey, Egypt, Arabia, Japan, South Africa
3           Korea, Thailand, Vietnam, Borneo and Indonesia
4           Australia and New Zealand, Mexico, the Caribbean, and South America

I hate to burst your bubble Lady, but ALL means that it will play DVD's with the designation "ALL" which means they are not region restricted....

Here's the link:  http://www.wolfevideo.com/products.asp?id=1110  (this also shows a photo of the bandanna)

The e-mail they sent me even had a great photo of the box, which says "Focus Features Four-Star Collection" in a banner across the top. Man, I can't WAIT for April 4th! (That will be the last day of my company's annual meeting, and this will be the best possible thing waiting for me when I get home after 5 grueling days of work!)

that's where i pre-ordered my copy from. i can't wait!!! i'm so excited!!

The last time I pre-ordered something, from amazon.com, it didn't arrive until
three days after it was in the stores, so I probably will be renting the DVD
while waiting for the delivery.

I'll order from Wolfe. How long til a directors cut or special version? There is so much music and cut scenes that I want to see. 9th viewing tonight and hope I can get in a couple more before the movie is pulled from the local theater.

I'm so irritated right now. I can't afford to see it at AMC anymore, and it hasn't hit the $1.50 theater yet. I don't know that it will. I'm in a sort of... well extremely conservative area. I wish I still had a job...

if you don't mind me asking, whats a $1.50 theatre? a threatre that has movies for 1.50 per viewing, i dont know im just guessing heh.   Cause here in southern california, i dont think we have that.

if you lived right by me, I'd go take you to see it and pay for you seriously.  Although I'm currently in a state of being poor, I can manage somehow.  Yeah, any fan of brokeback mountain, is a brother/sister to me.  Say, where do you live? im in Fountain valley, CA (orange county).  Name's Kevin

--------------------

my local rental place has a "Coming soon" board of all the latest movies coming out.  I think they get it on the first day or something? Brokeback Mountain is up there for April 4th, 2006! But i won't be renting it.. ill be buying it :) and just like any other person, I plan to buy it as gifts.  Gotta spread the word.  Its just one of those movies EVERYBODY has to see, its a masterpiece thats wonderfully well done... one the best love stories ever.. i can go on and on but i'll stop. I'm sure all of you can go on and on about this too, Ha!

If there is a special edition later, i'll buy that too.  gotta show my support right? i already have a few magazine covers related to it, the soundtrack, plan on getting the poster soon, and seen the movie 4 times so far! and it just keeps on going .. and going

The $1.50 theater does cost $1.50 a show. It's a second run theater. It plays movies after they've left the regular theaters, but before they've come out on DVD, sometimes for a little while after they've come out on DVD.

"7" is reserved for space travelers to the Moon - I can't wait for Brokeback Crater - "there are men in da craaaaater .....

I'm so sorry, I'm feeling kinda goofy - I saw BBM for the 7th time yesterday so I could finally say goodbye to Jack and Ennis on the big screen -  :'(  :'(  :'(

That's how crazy I am about this film - I was thinking yesterday (uh oh) how really awsome it has turned out to be that BBM, a movie about rejection, was rejected as Best Picture for a cheap, made-for-tv movie about, get this, L.A.  Wow, like THAT'S!!! never been done before.

Even though I am outraged for political reasons at the snub - I believe that god knows what we need, EVEN before we do.  Ya just never know how life is gonna turn out - I mean, this movie is about a socially stigmatized love, about unfullfillment, rejection, specifically about how this kind of love is rejected in society, and so, however unfairly it is that it did not win Best Picture (from the Academy - boy, there's a collection of odd genuises if you ever saw one), rejecting BBM as Best Picture makes it the Best 'Rejected' Picture of All Time, and what greater honor for a film about rejection than to, unwittingly, elevate it to a category above all others, standing by itself, now the symbol of .. itself, so beautiful, so touching, so endearing, so devastating, and forever lasting .... a love that will never grow cold, or old.  I don't think I know how to quit this .. really, I don't - I see another 12-step program in my future - cuz I'm powerless over BBM, but, in this case, because of it, my life has become just a little more manageable - whenever someone asks me why I'm nothing and nowhere, I can just say, I buried my heart at Brokeback Mountain.   :'(  :'(

The movie hit theatres here on Jan 26, so the dvd release won't be for at least 6 months.  Luckily for me, I'm going overseas before then and can buy the dvd on my holiday  ;D

When you say overseas, where?  Are you aware there are two zones for DVDs?  Zone 1 is for Americas, zone 2 is for the rest of the world.  You can't play in Europe a DVD bought in Amerca and vice-versa, unless you have a multi-standards player.

There are actually 5 zones for DVDs.

2 is only for West Europe, 3 - for East EUrope, for Russia is 5.

Yep they used not to. It is getting different now, we tend to have blockbusters released for sale and for rent the same day, or with a shorter delay (one up to four weeks). Also, movies are usually released on DVD about two or three months later than the theatrical release, which is a much shorter delay than it used to. BBM was released in late January here, so it is an exception for both the time-lap to the DVD rental date, and the delay between rental and sale dates as well.

I just got a reply from Wolfe where I pre-ordered BBM DVD.

Regarding pre-order, the studio notified all retailers not to be taking pre-books at this time but it will be up in a few weeks. The DVD will be released on April 4 but there may be a small chance of delay.

This really better come out on DVD on April 4th, because I can't wait much longer to see it again, and it's officially not within my reach. The closest theater still showing it is more than an hour's drive away.

The club mixes of "The Wings" will be released to stores on April 10th. I'm positive this will help some cross-promotion with the DVD, so even if there may be a small delay, it will definetly come out around the same time.

Title: Re: DVD Release Dates
Post by: bram on Mar 21, 2006, 09:47 AM
It's better. You see the entire picture. My Dad used to make short films, mostly stop motion.  The whole family used to help him make them, when I was a kid. We were very serious about it.

The only thing about full screen that's good, is that the picture is a little bigger. If you have a very small tv than having a slightly larger picture is probably more important than the fact that you're missing the sides of the picture.

I am sorry, I don't. All I remember is looking for a running commentary feature, from the director, actors etc. (I really enjoy this feature) and noticed that it was not present. Nothing else jumped out at me, but I am pretty certain that the features listed were similar to the ones posted elsewhere in this string of notes.
