Title: DVD Rental: "EXPLICIT SEXUAL MATERIAL. ADULTS ONLY!!"
Post by: Italian_Dude on May 14, 2006, 10:37 PM
Okay, so I'm mad.

I went to the video store to rent a DVD.. and I saw Brokeback Mountain DVDs, about twenty of them, and half were gone.
Crash had 2 copies and was a 5 day rental.. haha

So why am I mad?

The video store, "Great Canadian Video Network",  recently put a sticker on each individual BBM DVD cover avaliable to rent which said,

"EXPLICIT SEXUAL MATERIAL. ADULTS ONLY!"

.... WHAT? explict sexual material????

They are making it sound like some gay porn flick!! >:( >:( >:( >:(

Why though? There is ONE scene, the first night in tent that depicts gay sex.. there is not nudity in that part, it is like a majority of sex scenes in every movie these days, plus the remaining hetersexual sex scenes are done in a way that isnt "new" or "explicit" in the terms of hollywood.

They said people complained, after seeing that tent scene.. "OMG, I didnt think the movie was like this! I want my money back"
So now they are putting these stupid stickers on the Best Movie of the year.

Every other DVD in the entire store which contains similar sex scenes (soley between men and women) there is no warning.
In Canada, the DVD for BBM is rated 14a. Which means, 14 years of age and older can watch it alone, and if you are under 14 you require an adult with you. So a 14+ year old can go rent BBM if they wanted, just like many movies.. liek American Pie and all these stupid teen movies that depict sex even more so than BBM and in a stupid childishway.. these movies never had these "Explict Sexual Material" warnings..

So now the BBM DVD at this store, can ONLY be rented by an adult, despite the rating it was officially given of 14a, so they are going against that.. making it seem like its some sort of 2 hour gay porno!!! OMG I WANTED TO HURT THEM ALL!!
God that made me so mad, NO OTHER MOVIE had that, and I KNOW its because some stupid "Gay Is Evil" people are so scared to death of two people loving each other!

UgH! I had to vent.. I declare war!!!!!

I_D, thanks for keeping us updated on the DVD rental. It is indeed unfortunate. You have every right to vent about it.

It continues to amaze me that people would rent the DVD without knowing what it contains, especially with all the news coverage it had received.

Thats what I said !

How could these people who rent it not know? Unless you have no life and live under a rock, then maybe you wouldnt know, but I'd assume 99% of people with a television or radio, know what Brokeback is and what its basically about.. ugh!

Good venting Frankie... war it is ;)

I saw a segement on a norwegian foreign affairs show some time back..about a man in america that have made a business out of ...tampering...with films to cut out sex and violence. THe one we saw was him meddling with Troy. Ehn Brad kills the warrior at the beginning, he just used another clip of someone looking and cut out the killing and put this man in,..,. you can rent both the original and the meddled version in the store... what the F***??

Same thing IMO... Poor unsuspecting frail as porcelain audience that needs some uber god to tell them what is morally bad ? for them to watch... you go to war Frankie.. i will follow...

(and never mind how silly it is, isn't it illegal to do that to films?)

Esme, if I take a cynical view of all this, perhaps rentals will even triple...

It may be a covert marketing ploy...

'Adults' behave like lemmings when 'EXPLICIT SEXUAL MATERIAL' is tacked on to dvds.

To create more controversy will only feed th fire -- the dvd will gain a wider audience, no matter what.

BBM has explicit sexual material? Do the thousands of other movies that have sex in them have those same labels?  ::)
I had posted this a few weeks ago in another thread- a coworker bought the DVD because I raved about BBM. After she saw it she came in and said she was giving it away because the whole movie was nothing but sex and them kissing each other.  ???  I asked: "What version did YOU get? I'll gladly take that copy from you."

I truly don't understand people- rape, adultery and murder is okay in a movie but two men so in love with each other? God forbid people should set eyes on that. As said in prior posts- How in the world could anyone not know what this movie is about? Even those that are too "afraid" of the movie have some clue what it is about. Perhaps that rock they live under cut off too much oxygen. I really hate hearing about stuff like this.  >:(

I am siure more people would want to see it...just saw something about a south park episode last night... TOm Cruise in the closet, he has stopped it and now everyone has seen it :)

But as for it beeing a market ploy? I think it has been a great effort to try to avoid it beeing seen as a... well... red movie...

"It's a new Romeo and Juliet", well Romeo and Julio anyway... "one soul falling for another, the fact that it is two men don't matter"... that kinda thing :), so to turn around and try to market it as one now? No... don't buy that...

I would however buy the version LJN's friend got ;)

This is so stupid and ridiculous...  see how ignorant and primitive these fools are?!  I cannot believe they don't say anything or label other movies that have such a strong adult material specially between men & womenl!  God, I wish I could have power and destroy all of them at once (it's not the solution but I just wish!)...  Don't you sometimes just hate all of this phobia and judgemental issues about gay people?!  I'm tired of that and what a hipocrites these people are, they can all go to hell and burn!

I have a feeling those labels will come back and bite that video store in the butt--forbidden fruit and all that.  I agree that it's extremely hypocritical, though.  The sex (gay or straight) in BBM is really pretty tame by current Hollywood standards, and the nudity isn't very graphic, either.  It's hard to believe that anyone could be alive in this country and not have heard of BBM, but you never know.  Many years ago my mother saw "Midnight Express" (the one where Brad Davis was in a Turkish prison, something like that) because she thought it was an Agatha Christie movie!  Oy... ::)

Yea, that's what I'd like to know...what explicit sexual material?  I rented A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE the other night...oh my gawd, BBM is Disney compared to that :o, plus it was incredibly violent, yea I know look at the title.  But I am serious, I'd have rated this X, not R.  I let my four year old granddaughter watch BBM, skipping the tent scenes and the reunion scene.  I let her watch the motel scene and the hugging scenes, like after Ennis' divorce.  I want her to grow up knowing that there is nothing wrong with same-sex relationships.  Of course she's too young to be exposed to the sexual aspects of ANY relationship, but I want her to know that love is love.  This is a four year old child and she loves Ennis and Jack...when they were hugging when Jack comes to see Ennis after the divorce, she said "Awww that's sweet!"  I said, "Yes it IS sweet, they love each other."  She just goes back to playing with her toys, its not a big deal to her.  Then she wants to know why Jack is crying, I just told her that Ennis hurt his feelings.  Children can be raised without prejudices, its not that hard.

Well, all I have to say is bless your heart! I think its very sweet for u to show your grandchild bbm and let her see how love is love and the gender of the two persons in love should never be a factor, thats so sweet! If everyone had the same attitude as you, the world would be free of homophobia and hate.  thanks  :D

thanks for letting us know.  Now im furious.  thats just so.. sad.  Italian_Dude, you've told the staff/manager about this right? and brought up all these good points that you and these people had to say? thats what I would've done.  if i lived where you were, I'd go with you and we'd talk to them together! better yet, we'd get the whole entire board.  seriously.  if only we all lived near in each Heh.

@ esme, wow.  thats ridiculous, and yeah i'm pretty sure thats illegal.  that man is out of his mind.

@ tpe.  Now that you brought it up, maybe your right.  I think it will gain a wider audience but in a way its making it look bad.  You have the wide-screen edition right? (dunno if fullscreen edition has the same back side as the widescreen dvd).  I think if a person who has never heard of the movie picked this up, they'd be surprise and in for quite a shock.  Cause judging from the picture and description in the bac, FocusFeatures does make it sound like a normal "straight" movie.   The texting, wording and everything tells the truth.  But not the whole truth, i think.  Here ill quote the description

Quote
"Brokeback Mountain is a sweeping epic that explores the lives of two young men, a ranch hand and a rodeo cowboy, who meet in the summer of 1963 and unexpectedly forge a lifelong connection.  The complications, joys and heartbreak they experience provide a testament to the endurance and power of love.  Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal deliver emotionally charged remarkably moving performances in "a movie that id destined to become one of the great classics of our time"

in a way, doesn't that  sound like a normal straight movie?  I mean the pictures show (from left to right) Heath, Heath with Alma, Jack with Lureen, and Jack.  So a lot of people would assume that "The complications joys and heartbreak they experience provide a testament to th endurance and power of love" is with those girls in the pictures with them and them only.   and for the many people who see it like that, and are tricked.. well.. yeah it makes you feel bad but i guess whatever sells.  Whatever gets people to watch it.  and business is business in this world and the things it does to gain a wider audience/get more money is a bit evil sometimes. even if it means having to trick people.  (thats just one way of seeing it people heh, don't mind me. i like to see things, more specifically advertising in all different angles and ways)

.. ugh.  more sadness.  I agree, stuff like this is depressing.   did you re-tell your coworker to see the whole thing? (cause we know she didn't, if she did, she'd know that its a hell lot more then about that) she probably saw like half of it, then called it quits.  Then summed up the whole entire movie as "nothing but sex and kissing" without fairly watching it all.  I bet you looked at her different then before, when she said that huh?

@ donnaread, thats wonderful.  you just gave me an idea.  later in life when i have kids, i'm gonna do the same exact thing.  and its cause of you.  thanks for bringing that up :)

Anyone who thinks the sex scenes in BBM are explicit must have lead a very sheltered life ::)

Thanks donnaread for sharing the story about your grandaughter :) I had a similar experience with my daughter a couple of years ago, when she asked me why girls have to fall in love with boys, and I explained that that's not always the case, and sometimes two boys, or two girls, can fall in love, just the same as a boy and a girl, and she had no problem understanding or accepting that. She's only 7, so she has no real understanding of what falling in love actually means, but hopefully when she does, she'll have an open mind about it :)

Donna,

This is how change happens.  Teach our children.  You may never know the full impact of letting your grand daughter watch Brokeback Mountain.  This is no small thing that you have done.

Thank You.

You are so fantastic Donna!  *HUGS DONNA*

Just curious though, why did you decide to eliminate the reunion?  It is just a kiss.  One with passion I'll admit but, just a kiss.

I agree with you Donna, I wouldn't show a four year old child the tent scenes or reunion scene.

Not because its two men, but because a 4 year old shouldnt see anything of a sexual nature whatsoever, at least not one with such passion as Ennis and Jack had.. its kind of too much for that age to quite understand, but whether its between a man and women, two men or two women, I think it is a little much for a 4 year old, I agree.. they'd start asking questions. I wouldnt want my 4 year old cousin to see those particular scenes, the rest of the movie, yes, know what i mean?! lol!

P.S.

"Explicit Sexual Material. Adults Only."

--- I doubt a 4 year old would try to rent BBM... hahaha

and like i've said.. THERES NO EXPLICIT SEXUAL MATERIAL, it shouldnt be "adults only" it should go by the rating system and rating it was assigned, 14A! (under 14 requires adult!)

There was no rating in France in theaters and I hope there won't be for the french DVD. "Explicit sexual material"... just by putting on the TV you can see more at almost aech hour of the day. But of course it's always 1 man + 1 woman (or 2 women and an man besides lol)...
Anyway I think with or without this dumb warning the DVD will have a great career  :f) :c)

Here in the UK, for many years the BBFC (British Board of Film Censors) played nanny to us all and decided what we could and couldn't see. A new director was appointed after the last one retired at about 215 years old!   He has passed most things uncut since then. He realises that we are adult and can judge just as well as a self appointed group, what is sexually explicit and what is not.

One of the arguments for years was that if we were subjected to this uncut sex and violence then the incidences of rape and murder would increAse. This is despite the fact that there never once was a British film censor ever convicted of either crime even though they were subjected to these images on a daily basis for years.

I_D you are right to be incensed at this ridiculous label. Maybe if censors had looked at it the label wouldn't be there.
