Title: Deleted scenes-Ennis crying
Post by: Mars on May 14, 2006, 06:24 AM
I think it's important  for all of members of this forum to know that among the famous "deleted scenes" it seems
existing an other one where Ennis is crying loudly while holding onto the shirts.
I post the link:
http://community.livejournal.com/wranglers/936961.html

I hope it will be true and soon we'll be able to see it.

Oh god, I'm not sure I could handle this deleted scene if it's true - I'm enough of a mess just knowing that he's crying at all, without seeing him break down :'(

Mars, thanks for sharing this.

Wouldn't that be something if it is true? But with or without, I know that Ennis's heart was bleeding. Maybe one day it will surface.  ;)

You're right Ethan - we know that Ennis's heart was breaking at that point and we also know by the red eyes when he returns to the kitchen that he's been crying for a while up there. I would like to see Heath's performance in that scene though, if it's true - even if I had to watch from behind tears.

OT - Matron, that is a wonderful picture you have for your avatar.

And I hope that other deleted scenes gradually come to light as well.  This one is so important since it would show Ennis actually laying himself completely open, not caring about who might see or about any other consequences for the first time ever.  :(

see another sign of Ennis's vulnerability.... :'(

sheildmaid, congratulations on your 200 posts.  :D

I actually have a mixed feeling about this. BBM is a movie of subtlety. It was edited out probably because of this reason. The movie doesn't release your emotion but it hits you hard later.

Ennis in the shirts scene is so believable. He was in the state of confusion, surprise, sadness, and every emotion imaginable. It is just hard to cry out loud until it hits later.

So true Ethan.

If there is such a scene I'm not sure I'd be able to handle it! I'm already a sobbing mess by that point. Just picturing this scene has me ready to lose it.

Yes, Ethan I understand your point which was the director's too.
But...if there are really other scenes..also deleted...I would like to be able to see them
as a BBM lover...I'd "enjoy" all the possible existing shades of Ennis's love and torment..... :(

Yeah - I think the scene is perfect as it is, but I can't get enough of this movie/story and if there are deleted scenes then I want to see them simply because they would be to do with BBM.

At the same time...such a curiosity.......

I agree with everyone...the curiosity of seeing Heath really get into that scene would be something, although by saying that please don't think I'm taking anything away from what he already does, as he is just completely believable and utterly heartbreaking....so I am actually not sure my heart could take Ennis giving in to his grief in such an emotional way.   :'(

But having said this, and I don't mean to be a spoil sport here, but I'm really surprised that this deleted hasn't appeared anywhere on the net before now, either in video form or picture form.  We all know about the now infamous hippie scene, and there are even pics around that have the hippies in the background, but would probably need concrete proof of this scene actually existing before I let my heart prepare itself for another emotional battering!!!!

It seems nothing new about that scene, Mars, uh? I surfed the net a lot today also for it, but nothing (except that link you gave here today)... Anyway, did you have at least any sort of confirmation that that scene actually exists?

With this film, I thank God many times over that we do not see certain things -- for reasons that they will be too painful to contemplate out in the open.  This scene in question is most certainly close to the top...

Mars, we are torn, I think.  We cannot contemplate all this, but we would LOVE to see it nonetheless!

We do not turn our backs on anything that is BBM, becuase we love it too much -- even if it kills us.

To see such scenes played out: what a way to die...  What an exquisite way to die...

[ OOT: Mars, I am off to a dinner party hosted by a friend who leaves for Rome to teach for a few weeks.  (He's a Latinist and classics professor).  I should get him to meet you and frances.  :)  ]

I can see why some people might have reservations about seeing it, and I agree that it doesn't detract in the slightest way from the finished version of the film, but I would like to see it just to see how it compares to how I imagine it (it couldn't be any worse than the image I have in my head of Ennis breaking down in tears :'( )

I'm greedy, too.  If this exists, I would love to see it.  I don't think I could get any more emotionally attached to this movie than I already am, but this may send me over the edge.  I was surprised Ennis held it together as much as he did, but then again the scene cut out quickly.  I bet he bawled like a baby over Jack every day.  Okay, I need to go get a tissue . . .  :'(

I'm trying to imagine what it looks like and it makes me feel like I'm dying inside.

I'm with you, keren_b.  Although I think, artistically speaking (and let's remember that we're talking about a story and not about history, no matter how perfectly this tragedy might mirror someone's life - no insults intended AT ALL!!!!!) I love that you said "I'm trying to imagine what it looks like ..."  We all imagine it in our own way.  Ang Lee wants us to, and frankly so does/did Heath Ledger.  We get it that he loves Jack.  In fact, by 'straightening' the postcard at the end and saying "Jack, I swear ..." (oops, tears again) Ennis swears everything that needs to be sworn without saying a word.  Let's allow Ennis to cry in private.  I think I don't want to see this deleted scene if it actually exists.  I want to experience Ennis' pain on my own terms.

... just my thoughts ...

I feel quite opposite, that scene is so perfect now, i don't wanna change a thing.

If you are in a shock - and I assume that Ennis was totally shocked - you don't cry, you just freeze, you get a feeling that this is something unreal, a scene from horror movie, emotions running over you like hurricane. Tears, crying, shouting, pain will come afterwards.

I fall to the floor when Ennis says, tears stinging his eyes, "Jack, I swear ..." ... and I am POSITIVE that I can't handle seeing him actually break down and cry... honestly, I don't need his help to cry ...

I do want to see deleted scenes- I want to see every bit of film that was shot- call me greedy.  :)

I think seeing Ennis really lose it would be even more unbearable.

And yes Mars- a whole new "crying game."

You and me both, wanting to see every bit of film that was shot.  Think of all the takes of the sex scenes!  I want them  :-*

It seems to me that it won't be ever the word "the end" for this film.... ::)

That is wonderful, what you said.  No, there is no "the end" to Brokeback Mountain!  It has taken even more of a life of its own in all of our hearts and minds and bodies and conversations and artistic talents and...

Hi Jennis!  ;D

I'm really surprised too.  Its so frustrating to hear of people who have seen it, or who have taped it and then discovering they have no way of uploading it anywhere!  I'd rather I didn't know someone had a copy of it, to know how close we are to actually seeing it!

Please someone, anyone, get that clip and get it on here!   ;D

Sorry if this has been asked before, but does anyone have the clip from the Independent Spirit Awards, where they apparently showed a clip of Ennis in Jack's childhood bedroom leaning on the wall with his arm across his head crying? Man I would love to see that clip.

I have it on tape, but don't know how to upload on here. I know Your Tube had a clip of the show. Maybe you can search it on there. The clip was interesting to see because if you compare it to the cut used in the theaters, I think Ang made the better choice to use the one he did. The ISA clip version was a tad overwrought. Heath is rubbing his face against the shirt with this extreme pained look on his face, crying and falling against the wall. It was a bit over dramatic. The final cut version is much more subtle and true to Ennis' character.

dirtbiker, thanks for the info.  Yes, the final cut is more true to the bare bones of the short story, and is much more subtle...

And the final cut saves us from all the emotive horror of it all...

It sounds like you all are missing something here.  Ang Lee is a brilliant director.  He filmed a lot, cut some, and gave us the most wonderful movie he could.  If we see all the "bad" stuff he left out intentionally because it was just not right, it may spoil the movie for you. Taking a great movie and turning it into a mediocre one.

Not necessarily friend.  No deleted scene will ever have as much impact as the final theatrical release.
Knowing time constraints influenced what wound up on the floor makes me curious to find out if one or two more of those scenes were jems also.  Ang Lee and company were obviously on a roll with this film.  Were all of the deleted scenes scraps or the result of hard decisions being made.

Inquiring minds want to know.

I hope you are correct CSC.  I am one of those people who has always love those "how the movie was made" films.  I have always loved to watch the bloopers.  I might even like to see the scenes that were cut for one reason or another.  But, I saw a movie that is burned into my heart and mind and I do not think I want to see another version of it. That would be like looking at the Mona Lisa, except she is looking in the other direction and maybe with a frown.  Nope, they can show me the cut scenes and maybe narrate why they decided to shoot it in the first place and why it was cut, but I really have no interest in seeing a different Brokeback Mountain.

Nope, this is the one I love.

No, I would not resist dirtbiker.  I do not want the movie changed is all.  I said if they showed the scenes on the side, maybe with some explanation of why they were shot and then discarded I probably wouldn't mind seeing them.  But to issue a whole other movie with those scenes, no, I probably wouldn't be interested in seeing it.  BUT, only for this movie.  I have watched director's cuts of other movies just fine.  I love "Brokeback Mountain and am not interested in seeing it again, changed.

Ang Lee is a genius and we should trust his good taste. It's his property, his work of art, his 'child' not ours. We should be grateful he did it and showed it to us.

I have had other movies that included extra's, and it did not detract from the Director's cut for me.
There is the movie, and then the extra stuff.
Besides, if there is money to be made on it, Focus will put it out there !

I agree -- why the movie is so brilliant, because of Ang Lee's less-is-more perspective.  I love it exactly as is (well...except I wish there'd been a sex scene when they were older...).

But, that's what's cool about DVD's, is getting to see some deleted scenes!  Ang Lee could choose a carefully selected few, and some funny bloopers, too.  Kind of not fair, in the DVD age, to not give us a little bit more extras. :c)

I didn't want to give the impression that I wanted a different version of BBM.  The final version is the one that gripped my heart.  However, I am too curious for my own good.  A special features section with the additional footage and related commentary would have really added to this DVD.  As happy as I am with the current DVD package, I will definitely buy a later version if a good portion of the deleted scenes are featured.

I like to think that if a deluxe version of the DVD were released, I would watch different parts/versions as the mood took me.  Feeling nostalgic or sad or in love, I would watch the original.  In a lighter mood, I might pursue deleted scenes, bloopers, and the like.  Not to say I would change anything about the original--I love it this way.  Would we have as much to talk about had Ang Lee included more?  After all, that's what fan fiction is for!   ;)

You say that the final scene used is true to Ennis's character.  Loving another man is not true to his character that we know of.  If we allow him to cry, we are allowed to see that he truly loved Jack and that the human part of him is alive and well.  Often things happen that make us behave in ways not expected.  He can no longer hold in the emotion.

Bring it on!!!

RH, this is a good observation, IMO.

I presonally preferred that they don't show Ennis crying openly.  But thinking about it now, a crying scene need not be hysterical.  A quiet stream of bitter tears is more eloquent than all the loud sobs or mournful wails in the world.  If shown as such a quiet scene of deep sadness, I think the film could have possibly gained -- and still be true to the nature of Ennis's character. Just my opinion.

I am just certain everyone involved would have made sure Ennis's crying was done totally beautifully in character...and I would have loved to see it.  Even like when he was retching in the alley, pounding the wall, etc., toward the end of that he let out one actual crying sob.  So Ennis has indeed cried; and in the closet, his eyes were already filled with tears, so he could have just let them roll down his face; he could have dropped down to the floor holding the shirts and buried his face in them, hidden his face from the camera, and we'd know he was crying, mourning his loss...  (Excuse me, I have to go wipe my tears away...)

Yes, I also believe that Heath wouldn't do it in a melodramatic, over-the-top kinda way... I'm sure that it was still subtle and faithful to Ennis's carachter. Heath knew Ennis and understood him, he got into his skin, he would'nt shoot a scene that was against his nature. I'm sure it was totally gut-wrenching.  :\'(

I agree, if Heath's acting is even half as good as it is in what we do see,or in the alleyway scene,as ksxks mentioned, then it deserves to be seen by the world, just so we can appreciate his talent.Denying us that is like when people buy priceless works of art, then lock them away in a vault, where no-one can see them or enjoy them :(
That said, I wouldn't want to see it as a new version of the film but as a deleted scene. I would happily pay for a new dvd just to see it :)

I'm sure you are right keren.  Knowing how much Heath became Ennis I can't imagine this scene was overdone.  I'd like to believe it was cut as a result of some hard choices Ang Lee had to make.  For me it doesn't have to become part of the film.  I will fall apart just watching it as a stand-alone scene. :\'(

Only 3 seconds but it took my breath away!

From some reason I can't download the whole trailer you posted on megaupload Christie, I was only able to see the little bit Mars has posted. Is there another link where I can watch the whole trailer including the deleted scene??

The whole trailer posted by Christie Wood, beyond that scene, is a simple trailer of BBM...
IMO it doesn't contain deleted scenes other  than the Ennis crying's one!

Oh Christie, thank you.  Mystery solved, then -- the Ennis-crying-deleted-scene is in the trailer (along with other scenes not in final version).  I just watched it and I'm at work, so I didn't have sound on and couldn't keep playing it over and over etc., so I can't wait to get home and save it and watch it over and over...  It's funny, because I did have a picture in my mind of this "missing scene," I guess because I had seen this trailer, but before I saw the movie a dozen times, and didn't realize the scene wasn't in the movie.

Anyway, more words than necessary, but thank you!

I'm glad you all liked the trailer and agree that it was amazing, considering how short it was.  I should have added in my original post "blink and you might miss it".   :)

I cant understand why it wasnt included in the film. It's like literally 5 seconds long, and would have fitted perfectly in with that scene, just emphasising Ennis' loss and pain.....I thought those few extra seconds really brought a new insight into the tortured soul of Ennis.

Funny how Ennis cried more than Jack, yet Jack was the more open one, and Ennis was the repressed one....its how he felt about Jack, thats what brought the tears falling for Ennis.....Jack was the love of his life, and he just couldnt bring himself to be with him in the way Jack wanted.   :\'(

Christie, I am speechless.  :t)  Those 3 seconds show a whole lifetime of pain on Ennis.  They sure as hell should have left that in--should've nixed out a couple of seconds of Cassie or that damn sledding scene with Alma and Ennis to put this in.  Sorry, I'm being greedy here, but that should've been included.  It was heartbreaking but showed the love Ennis had for Jack, too.

I've always felt the pain for Ennis.  Jack at least had his self-esteem and all that, and kept coming back for more Ennis regardless.  True, he was on a "short leash," but Ennis's pain was like doubled -- he not only hurt inside himself, but was hurting Jack.

Is it my imagination......  in that trailer....  the scene with Ennis in the alley looks different
to me than what  the scene on the DVD?

Discuss amongst yourselves.  ;)

I thought it looked like it was run faster, for one thing; or else I'm used to a lot of vids that are often slowed down?  Also, I thought the voiceovers weren't from the movie dialogue, but were recorded separately just for the trailer?  It's subjective, but it seemed that way to me.  Just looked and sounded different.

I agree with everybody who said that this scene should've been included. it would add so much to the entire scene... and Heath did it beautifully, just like I expected from him. so sensitive... my heart aches for Ennis.
Karen, you said that you felt more pain for Jack until now... and I always felt more pain for Ennis. He was the one who was left behind to feel all the pain. Nothing worse than when the person you love dies, and you're left behind to live with the memories and the pain. And these three seconds are pure pain, for the life of me I can't understand why it was cut out. I feel choked up just looking at the screencaps.

I also wasn't able to access the whole trailer, just the 3 seconds bit posted by mars, and I would be really happy if the whole trailer including this scene would show up at youtube or anywhere else.

Wow thanks for posting the file!  I don't think it was over-the-top like some people have mentioned in the past.  His emotions were still restrained like the Ennis we know.  I would've loved to have this extra 3 or so seconds included as part of the movie, and not in the deleted scene!  :\'(

And don't forget he cried at his divorce and the last time he and Jack were together Esme.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news.  But I don't think the few seconds we see is all of it.  Look at the movie. Ennis' mouth is by the colar of the shirt when the scene ends.  Now look at the cut seconds. Ennis' mouth is fully behind the shirt.  Something came between those two I think.

Fact is Kathy, some hear it and some do not. Fact is, there is only one person on the planet who will even convince me I did not hear Ennis say, "I love you," and that one person is Heath Ledger.

Well, using that logic Christie, why do you have to see Ennis cry, we know he did.  When he came downstairs with the shirts his eyes were all red and tearfilled.

After posting my previous post I realized that saying "I love you" would be the perfect thing to say even if Heath was getting himself into the "mood" to cry convincingly right after that.

You mean you'd rather we didnt see Ennis cry?  Just seeing him come downstairs with the shirts and eyes filled with tears would not be enough for me.....we needed to see Ennis find those shirts, touch them, smell them, and finally let his feelings for Jack out while holding the shirts......and Ennis needed to let those feelings out.

Of course Christie. And the "I love you" is a part of those feelings.  Those words are the first time they were ever said in two hours and 14 minutes.

Interesting suggestion Mactwck.  I did just that months ago. I sent letters to Jake and Heath through their agent.  I asked Heath if indeed he said "I love you" in the closet scene and I asked Jake if Heath said, "I'm sorry. I'm so sorry" and did he reply "It's alright." in the second night in the tent.

To date...no reply.

Hey neighbor:  Yeah, I swear I heard it too.  It was one of the times I was at the theater by myself and taking notes in the dark, and I couldn't believe what I thought I heard.  But I haven't researched it thoroughly at home with the DVD's.  So, I'm glad you heard it too.  You know, I understand people learn a lot of unheard dialogue by watching with the subtitles on, yes?  Even though I think the subtitle-writers might not always get it right, but still, I'll have to do that sometime, also.

I never watch subtitles Kathy, NEVER. They can be so inaccurate. I heard and continue to hear Ennis say "I love you." He says it as he is exhaling and he says it fast.  It is more like a whisper in fact.  The fact that you heard it when you weren't expecting to is proof enough it is there. If others can not hear it that is too bad because it adds so much to the movie. These words, "I love you", were coming from a very repressed man who for 20 years could not admit his love. These words, "I love you" being spoken only once in a 2 hour and 14 minute movie that is filled with love...beautiful...simply beautiful. And then, to learn that Ennis cried his heart out right after saying them. It was the moment of transformation for Ennis.  Ennis' heart was battling his fears and his heart was finally winning.

You're right about hearing them -- I was not purposely listening for them, and thre they were.  And I so agree that it's extremely meaningful for Ennis to be saying that, after 20 years of neither of them (presumably) saying it to each other.  I get chills, what  you said, the moment of transformation, Ennis's heard battling his fears...

he may not have said the words before :) and btw I insist on disagreeing unil proven otherwise :) but when Ennis says to Jack last time they met "i'ts because of you that I'm like this, I'm nowhere, I'm nothing" that is pretty much a statement of love to me.

But then, what is in the film, Ennis bringing those shorts down and asking for them IN FRONT OF JACKS DAD that , to me, is also a very powerful statement of his love :) Let's not forget that taht might be all Ang Lee ment we needed :)

I agree Esme.....Ennis said I love you in many different ways.  And yes, when Ennis asks Jack's mum if its ok to take those shirts, in front of them both, KNOWING what they would both interpret that request to mean, that is a huge and powerful statement of Ennis' love for Jack.

Less is more, and this film has shown that time and time again.

I just have one question. Why is it so important to try to destroy the one moment in a movie that means so much to many of us?  You didn't hear it? I am sorry. Perhaps you will some day.  But why try to destroy it for those who did?

Well, I am a stubborn old bastard, I know what I heard, and I will not allow anyone to destroy it for me.  So, I guess you can stop trying now.

I am not trying to destroy anything.  I love this film as much as you, as much as anyone on this board.  That is why I am here.  Just because we think differently about this, does not mean there has to be any hostility surrounding it.  We are all entitled to our opinions.

Then why can't people on the opposing side simply say, "Well, I haven't heard it. Perhaps some day I will."

By the way, I wasn't responding to your post. But, obviously the shoe fit...

I listen intently to various sequences; sometimes I'm sure I hear things, other times I don't. Does it matter? If what we hear, or think, we hear, adds to the experience, fine. If not, fine. The movie is what it is uniquely to each of us and totally to all of us.

You were replying to mine Patriot1 I guess...

Well, what if I think it spoils it having Ennis saying the word and it is more perfect for me to not hear it?

because of low speak, different languages and perhaps different qualities on speakers it varies what we all hear on this film and it is why we differ in opinion.

I agree with you 100% Esme.  Then instead of saying, "...and btw I insist on disagreeing unil proven otherwise..." and "I don't think he says it... ", wouldn't it be better to say, "I haven't heard it, and I prefer not to hear it because I believe it would take away from the film."?  Kathy and I are not the only two that hears it. Have we all gone mad and are hearing voices? Kathy wasn't even expecting to hear it and she did.  I will even grant you that the first time I heard it, it might have been the power of suggestion in the discussion here.  But Kathy never read that discussion before she heard it.  She heard it because it is there.  But you, you have never heard it. Perhaps because you don't want to hear it and that is fine with me.  But please, don't try to destroy that moment for those who did by saying, "I don't think he said it..." in such a way as to mean that the rest of us are crazy. "I didn't hear it and I prefer not to" is more than enough.

Esme, I don't know what the others think of this scene, I  couldn't speak for them if I did.  But to me, this is the turning point of the movie. This is the turning point of Ennis's life.  I sat and watched a man loving his friend and showing it by ordering soup instead of beans, by shooting an elk instead of letting Jack shoot a sheep, and other ways. But he never could tell Jack he loved him. "What about you," Jack says to Ennis. "Me, I don't know." Ennis replies. Jack, his best friend, drives for 14 hours only to have Ennis send him away after 1 minute and 28 seconds. Jack, his best friend sits there and tells Ennis, "Truth is...sometimes I miss you so much I can hardly stand it." and without a word, Ennis turns and looks into the fire as if he can't understand why Jack would miss him so much.

Then Ennis finds the shirts that have been hanging in Jack's closet for 20 years.  For 20 years Ennis' shirt has been embracing Jack's. Look at Ennis' face. He is shocked. He trembles, his breathing trembles. Ennis has discovered that Jack was in love with him and not only loved him as a friend. Ennis discovers and finally allows himself to admit he is in love with Jack also and says it, finally after 20 years, "I love you." and then breaks down into tears because he will never be able to tell Jack that he loves him. Ennis will never be able to lay next to Jack and whisper into Jack's ear, "I love you." Jack is gone, and Ennis cries bitterly for the loss and for never before telling Jack he loved him, not even as a friend.  Ennis came downstairs a new man. Ennis realized he is in fact a queer and he lost the only person he ever really loved. That is what that scene means to me. Don't know if it is what Ang Lee intended, but it is the way I see it and it is the part of the movie where I cry the hardest, for our two boys, for the wasted 20 years and for the sweet life they could have had on the Twist Ranch, out in the middle of nowhere. Each of our boys getting their wish; Ennis to be anonymous and Jack to live with Ennis on a little cow and calf operation.

If you don't see it that way, well, that is ok. I just hope however you see it, it is as beautiful for you as the way I see it is for me.

the danger with the internet is that it is impossible to see or hear how something is intended to sound... you can put a  *^) but is it silly or sarcasm?? you know?

Well :) to you and a  :^^) this is one of the best parts of the film and I sure hope there will be an extended edition with more of this in it :)

And Edgar...HAHAHA  ^-^ I just cannot spell and when it is 35 degrees in my livingroom my fingers stick to the keyboard ...I am notorious for missing double consonants... not in norwegian is IKKE and I usually spell it ikek.... ;) so I guess a pair of shorts wasn't the worst I could get for ya ;)

Yes, Esme, writing on the internet can be very problematic, even with emoticons (smileys).

Keren_b, LuvJackNasty, Mars, Chameau, Twisted, Aimi15, KsxKs, and Welshwitch, thank you all for your kind words.  But you know, after rereading my post 24 hours later, I know I could have done a better job. My problem at the time was that I have never learned to write under water and while gasping for air. But, I am grateful it came out well enough to draw all of your heartfelt and warm words.  Thank you all.

If you don't see it that way, well, that is ok. I just hope however you see it, it is as beautiful for you as the way I see it is for me.

Patriot1, you've just broken my heart with that post - truly beautiful :\'(

Having now seen the "deleted scene", I'm actually glad that Ang Lee didn't use it. It's like so many other things in the movie - what we don't see is almost as powerful as what we do. We don't need to see all their intimate moments to know how passionate their love was (even if we might like to ;)) and we don't need to see Ennis breaking down to know how many tears he shed for his soulmate or how his heart was torn apart by finding out how much Jack loved him.

Like everyone else , I want to see this as a deleted scene when they get round to producing the special edition DVD.  But it is missing from the film for a very good reason - we know Ennis has been breaking his heart up there and don't need to see it to know that.  That's the skill of a brilliant director and outstanding actor.

I've got to the point where I don't really want to see any other version than the one we have. It's not perfect, but anything else isn't going to make it so.

There again, if I knew a director's cut was in the shops, I'd be queuing outside waiting for them to open.

I absolutely agree, ww, that it's perfect as it is...but I'd go get it the first day it was released also.

I said in another thread that I totally respect a director's desire to keep his deleted scenes to himself, but...  Oh yes, it was on the WS or FS DVD thread I think, where they mentioned the two-DVD set coming out, but that it added only stills.  So I'm thinking if they're just stills from the deleted scenes, that would be cool.  Except we've got all of them already (and I haven't ever asked, not from the start, how those were come by).

I hadn't heard of a two-DVD coming out. That seems a lot of stills to fill a whole DVD doesn't it. Not that I'm complaining - I'd sit and look at them that's for sure. :)  But I would kill for the deleted scenes. If they put them on the 2nd DVD, people could either look at them or not according to their preference. I also respect the directors desire to keep his deleted scenes to himself, but .... sometimes unscrupulous people get their hands on them and they come to light anyway. It would be even worse if that happened and someone else benefitted from them.

I wished those three seconds could have been left in.   Ennis finally honored Jack, and understood how much Jack really did love him, and finally letting his owned bottled up emotion come out.

but on the other hand would it have change the meaning of the story?  What a difference three seconds make.

You are right, mahattangirl. IMHO, these three seconds would definitely make a difference, probably not the meaning of story though. Knowing Ennis's character, I thought the crying part would be better in the last scene after Alma Jr. left.

I think Ang Lee aimed for understatement above all.

Funny, but I had always assumed that he cried with the shirts in his hands, even if they did not show this explicitly.  The reason: his eyes were tearful when we see him come down with the shirts...

the understatements might be what makes this movie so great. It is not loud like some movies, but very tender at moments. That makes the pain actually come through more than when they put in one effect after the other.

We do feel somehow that the scene with the shirts was truncated, in a way, no?  Nonetheless, I do think was natural and expected for Ennis to lose it at that moment.

Thanks, Esme.

Me too. There were so many different things running through him- denials stripped away, realizations, regrets, the true extent of the loss perhaps really hitting him at that moment. When I first saw this clip months ago it destroyed me and watching it again had the same effect. We never needed to see it to feel it but it makes it more heartbreaking to me.

For me it's always been obvious he was crying when he found the shirts... he was already crying when he entered the room (close up, tear on left cheek).  The scene was already enough poignant so I could understand Ang Lee's choice at the editing... maybe he didn't want to push it?  As it is this scene is heart breaking... here I go again  :\'(

You know, when you think of that whole progression of scenes when Ennis visits Jack's parents' home, you're going to cry.  I find the home so bleak with its dingy white walls, lack of furniture, lack of decorations, curtains, subtle amenities most people have in their homes.  When I see Mom standing fiddling with her apron, quiet, obviously cowed by her husband, I immediately choke up.  Then when Ennis is sitting at the kitchen table, trying to keep it all together, and hears the old man speak denigratingly about Jack, the tears really come.  So, by the time Ennis goes to the room, handles the wooden horse he had carved, then finds the shirts, I am a MESS!  This is a real heart-breaaker.  I can't see Ennis' tears through my own!

I don't know if I could have handled Ennis in a full-fledged cry at the end of the film.  At this point in the film I am so in tuned to his lonely, and empty state.  His watery eyes followed by "Jack I swear.." is more than enough to release my flood gates..again. :\'(

This scene came back to mind after seeing the film again yesterday, and I must admit I was wishing that the crying scene was left in the final cut. Even if it doesn't change the meaning very much, I was thinking that it was time that we saw Ennis "losing it" as Esme said. He is always "putting reins" on his feelings. When he is alone in Jack's room, he could loosen up a bit, I think.

Anyway, I cried in Jack's room, even if Ennis didn't !!

So true.  Even if Ang Lee chose to delete this scene, we do see Ennis in tears at the the end.

In the ss, we know that many times, his dreams of Jack end in tears.

There's another reason why I don't think it's the same one, jacks_key : if that horse had been one that Ennis carved, I think he would have reacted more when he saw it in Jack's room. In the film, it would seem that the wood carving has no significance for Ennis.

I don't think it is the same one either. First time I saw it I thought maybe it was, but the horse that Ennis picks up is much more detailed than the one Ennis carved.

right... just came back from a film vision, and watched carefully after having been here..
in jack's room it seems to be a toy, not a pure wood carving, too refined and too many details (hat of the rider etc)

to shortly come back to ennis crying: we have seen him crying "often" though, as we have seen also jack. worst for me was after they parted, ennis in the alley... what a pain.

Sorry to rain on your parade but the cowboy siting on a horse Ennis found in Jack's room has nothing to do with the horse one Ennis carved.  Ennis carved a plain horse.  The one he found in Jack's room is an old toy from Jack's childhood of a cowboy mounting a horse.  We are actually off topic and should go back to the scheduled program, huh?

I would call that letting go, when he collapsed and Jackwas holding him.  Maybe we didn't see tears streaming, you're right, but still...  I just meant he was not holding it all in during that confrontation scene.  But then, I guess this thread is about just that one scene in the closet with the shirts -- sorry.

I think this is for another thread...but you're right -- that line in the SS is so intriguing, and does tell us where things were left after the confrontation, after the DE flashback, and then Ennis drives away.  Well, doesn't exactly tell us, but gives us something to try to interpret.

I think this is for another thread...but you're right -- that line in the SS is so intriguing, and does tell us where things were left after the confrontation, after the DE flashback, and then Ennis drives away.  Well, doesn't exactly tell us, but gives us something to try to interpret.

sorry cham - just a quick one  *o)      kathy which thread is dealing with this? thank you

Exactly, Magda -- that's what is so wonderful about BBM.  So much to learn about it and from it, and each of us with our own different minds and hearts.

I'm not sure.  In Characters, Quotes & Scenes, is there not a thread for the Confrontation Scene?  I'll have to look, or you'll have to look.  Plus, it's interesting to interpret these things considering both the movie and the SS.

I just happened to watch "Jarhead" today and there are some short deleted scene footage in the preveiws section at the beginning of the DVD....including Ennis crying with the shirts. There are some scenes here I never saw in the film.  Ang, you MUST release your Director's cut of this film. YOU MUST! Your audience awaits. Has anyone else seen this?

Anyway, we did see him crack, in the "confrontation scene" -- I can't stand this anymore...crying in Jack's arms.  At least we saw him really let go that once.  I would just love to see what would have happened right after that, before Ennis drove off.

kathy

I have to say, me too. There's been times that I've wondered that. Even figuring it would only play as filler, it would be nice to have that extra bit to chew on, that little bit more insight into how Ennis projects his attachment and issues when he's got no choice and can't stifle his feelings..

So right, OT.  Ennis having broken down like that, it would have been good to see what would follow that, between them.  But based on Jack's melancholy as Ennis drove away, and his flashing back to the DE, it doesn't sound like they really moved on to someplace new.  As the book said, "torqued back to where they had been, nothing resolved," etc...  Maybe Ennis just got all withdrawn after revealing himself like that.

Oh, I can hardly continue thinking about it at the moment -- just so sad.  I would have loved if that breakdown opened him up, but it doesn't seem so...

this was one of the two scenes that tortured me the most in the film (the other the divorce-mexico thing)..
but i must say that it tortured me even more in the story...

the sentence you quote here kathy.. :-\\

i still very often chew on this... HOW did they leave things, HOW did they part? with a simple "see you then" ?
"nothing changed"... so jack still wanting him?
"nothing resolved" ... ennis still denying his love for jack..

i know, both in OS and film the "dozy embrace" puts a link to it...

but it has never been enough for me...  :\'(

tizi, I feel what you're saying. These scenes, no matter how they're spliced, know just how to ache inside someone.

I know it's bitter-bittersweet, but at least they had that dozy, personal, romantic embrace where everything against them shattered just so their souls could touch. That dinky moment without the pretense of fear stays with them forever, even when it wasn't their foreground :ghug:

I can't recall the exact lines in the book just now, but didn't the book use the word "almost" when it described the torquing back?  Kathy, did you quote this exactly?  If yes, then I am surprised that my impression all along was that there was a small but measureable change...

It IS interesting that we really don't see how exactly they parted in the last confrontation.  Perhaps this was best, as I think it would have been too difficult to get it right -- especially after the juxtaposition with the Dozy Embrace...

If you don't mind to come back to the specific cut scene we discuss on this topic, this link to Youtube is still good, you'll have to be patient and wait until the very end of the video.

In case anyone was like me and couldn't see it in the previous links, here is the trailer from youtube:

I am currently uploading this (very short) scene to livevideo and will post the link once it becomes available, it's still pending approval.

No, Thomas, I didn't quote it verbatim, just from memory.  Here it is.  (Isn't it funny when things like this happen:  I opened the book to the exact page!)

Like vast clouds of steam from thermal springs in winter the years of things unsaid and now unsayable--admissions, declarations, shames, guilts, fears--rose around them.  Ennis stood as if heart-shot, face gray and deep-lined, grimacing, eyes screwed shut, fists clenched, legs caving, hit the ground on his knees.

"Jesus," said Jack.  "Ennis?"  But before he was out of the truck, trying to guess if it was heart attack or the overflow of an incendiary rage, Ennis was back on his feet and somehow, as a coat hanger is straightened to open a locked car and then bent again to its original shape, they torqued things almost to where they had been, for what they'd said was no news.  Nothing ended, nothing begun, nothing resolved.

So you are correct about "almost."  But in my mind, the "Nothing ended..." line always seemed to override the torquing things almost to where they had been.  And anyway, what exactly is meant by "where they had been"?  Had been when exactly?

Yes, perhaps it was too little too late, as they usually say.  Not too late for Ennis, thank God, but too later for Jack nonetheless.

And yes, the primary feeling one gets is a sense of overwhelming statis, even though there is a hint of slight movement in the word "almost".

Besides, "almost" cound imply a step BACKWARD as much as a step forward...

Fo' sho!  ;)

All the more that I want the deleted scene.

Man oh man, just tonight I was thinking and got all curious again about the "Well since we're gonna start workin' together, I reckon we oughta start drinkin' together" scene. I really would like to see it. The others too, but...

There's something about mary! Ennis' crying face hidden in Jack's embrace to the ground. I think it'd be rich, as an extra scene, to see Ennis recover from one breakdown. To see what he radiates as his tears dry, maybe especially at this (st)age. It's kind of intriguing to me, given Ennis had never been confronted like this where the involuntary mechanisms, and feelings he didn't want to feel, but does, were no body's fault but his own. All the frantic voices in his head that had always kept him going straight as an arrow were silenced because none had ever even whispered the emotion he has in this scene. He must have felt vulnerable as roadkill, for it was brutally parallel his memory of Earl, so fear was a relevant emotion. He'd crumble some and eventually decide to let Jack know he was ready if not too late that season. This is what he does in the movie of course. Too late.

But this brings me to the absence of I-love-yous. Ennis let himself barely slide past FC. I think if the term 'love' had been mouthed, it would have been time to quit right then, and there'd be nothing in the future; it would have probably brought back his dad's voice, hand clenched into his left shoulder... around his neck. In a ditch. The end.

Holding onto Jack and forced to stare at love death.  :\'( - - IMO, FC is such a facet of their summer of '63 when, again, they had to part. Ennis breaks down but his face again fades from our view, in silhouette before we can really see his tears: what color were they. what did they say. do they tickle as they trickle; the transitional facial expression between his brokedown world and the virtual one he'd been taught, is what I'm left to ponder. Not necessary to the plot, I know, but it definitely stimulates my curiosity: Maybe it's only a few seconds, but what happens as Ennis' tears dry? What happens as he recovers, what's he do, and what is he feeling most prominently while he's in this transition, this momentary lapse?

Fear? Love?
... Lear? Fove?
 :P

For instance, we get a look at Jack in this fashion as he trucks it outta Ennis' place, crying, composing himself at a dark Mexico pitstop on the way to the straight life. Naturally, I wanna see Ennis drive down that road as well. He's generally a very sufficiently animated character. So we only need a couple more seconds!
                                                          *COUGHdirectorscutCOUGH*  (^)  $)

The answers may be obvious according to the individual, but some of us want the (other) visual too! The little snippet of a clip where Ennis emotes us the answers! PLEASE - - THE DELETED SCENES!  ^*)

I feel the same way as far as the I-love-yous go.  The possibility of seeing Ennis recover from the breakdown intrigues me, although I am almost sure that he would have not used the word "love".  But putting the various scenarios/possibilities aside, it is even more intriguing that we are never told exactly how he recovers or how they parted.  For my part, I had assumed that he just stood up and drove away without saying another word -- he was probably so unused to being is such a position of vulnerability...

Yeah.

And by all means, the scenes that didn't make the cut are of lesser substance and maybe too abstract. But there's the curious part of me that can tolerate the distraction, and other times kind of need it. It's good not so much for story telling but creative purposes.

The deleted scene of them both in the truck? I've always been a little evoked by that glimpse of them. Especially by Ennis' blinking, morose look of denial or something. Maybe he was a couple blinks from a tear, but his mood seemed to say so much.

That's what I thought, too.  They "torqued things almost to where they had been."  It doesn't say "back" to where things had been.  Was "where things had been" a good place, or not a good place?  We see the scene of them parting and Ennis only then telling Jack that he couldn't make it in August, from which point things went south, but we don't really know how it had been for them all week.  Maybe it was unbelievably wonderful...but even so, judging from their "confrontation," it seems that even though their time together might have been wonderful, the same situation still existed -- Ennis's "getting together every once in a while," not Jack's "sweet life together."

Anyway...we have a slightly different sense from the story than from the movie, just because of that word "almost," which gave you some small hope, Thomas, but which didn't color my perceptions as much.  I mostly saw it as we saw it in the movie, and it was depressing...

And it was all the more depressing because they had to contrast it with the Dozy Embrace.  IN the story, of course, this was meant to be a kind of consolation -- Jack's final valedictory.  But in the movie, it didn't exactly feel this way.  It only served to cast a stronger light on their current situation.

Had they shown the Dozy embrace AFTER the final confrontation, perhaps it would have been more comforting.  As it is, we only get a sense of how hopeless the current situation was, and Jack's parting glance fills us with foreboding.

If I were secure enough about the situation, I'd say yes. But I don't feel my experience is as cut and dry as the movie. Or rather, it's not as final as the movie. In ways that makes me very hopeful. But as my post is getting far more personal than relative, I will concur. Their love was to continue regardless of life or death..

But an end need not be that way.  The end of exile, perhaps?  I think here of O'Neill's Long Day's Journey Into Night. :)

The absence of the physical element sometimes bites my ass hard. I don't like to get stuck on it, though it sometimes happens.

By end of exile you do mean that there'd be no more leaving or losing the safe ground between Jack and Ennis? Something paradoxical like not having to fight to find that ground anymore because it's gone? :) I know I could have read into it wrong, but I still feel like smiling on this idea.

I find it elaborates on the idea of that separate peace, but then I still wonder how long it would take Ennis to either accept he could never physically love Jack again, or to believe Jack was just the stage before his discovery of something truer. Often I find my faith and the likelihood of Ennis' to be in constant limbo with each other.

One thing I find for certain is, and as a token of that immortality you mention, Ennis could at least always look in the closet to know how his heart (and Jack's) works.

The absence of the physical element sometimes bites my ass hard. I don't like to get stuck on it, though it sometimes happens.

Well, it is sort of like that, but more along the lines of not having to wander anymore, because you have found your home -- your center.  It doesn't matter if that center is something entirely disembodied.  Death does not rob us of a center.  That is I think what you mean about knowing a Heart.  It goes beyond the physical.

THis is what makes the SNIT so beautiful, for instance.  The sense of anchor is there, but it hovers above the embracing bodies -- almost like a winged spectator about to take flight.

Thanks for clarifying. I do get what you mean.

About knowing a heart. That is vague on my part, to be certain. In one fashion it's like simply remembering the heart by looking at its physical replica, so to speak, when it otherwise feels absence or empty: the two shirts. A reflection of his center.

"It goes beyond the physical" :)

I also like how you described SNIT. It's something just recalling how warm this scene initially made me feel. It was like being turned inside out. It was such a beautifully vulnerable experience. I sometimes feel the initial shock when SNIT and the last trailer scene come together in my mind.

It's so gut wrenching. I'm glad (well, don't know if "glad" is the right word here) that we got a chance to see it, but I understand why they didn't include this bit in the movie. I know Ang made the decision but I believe Heath would've agreed with him - like Ang he believed that sometimes less is more, and kept his acting very subtle.

Thanks orangetruck.  It is not easy to know the Heart.

It is safe to say that in the scene in LC -- with Ennis breaking down -- we see a Heart exposed.  We cannot help but reach out and react without knowing too precisely why.  It is enough to know that the Heart goes beyond the self.

I think so too, although I too am glad that we have to option to view this outside the definitive version.

Even short, the deleted scene has deleted my mind now! It's heartbreaking to see Ennis falling apart when smells Jack's shirt. I always felt that the shirts were the final stroke for me, but now seeing him so sad, I am broken!  $) $) $)

The cut part is maybe 2 or 3 seconds longer, Ennis crashes in a wall and burst into tears.

I'm a little surprised that they deleted that scene.  Maybe to make the "Jack, I swear" hit harder?

Maybe and, IMO, it shows the great respect Ang Lee had for the original story. He choose not to show too much and stick to the storyline.

Yes,it's already in the correspondent thread...I don't know why they deleted it in the end...Maybe because of this; it would have been too heartbreaking...By the way, have you realised he says "I love you"?. :_(

I've seen this for the first time ...   Just three seconds, but these can wrench a heart, indeed ...  :-\\

I doubt whether the reason for deleting that scene has something to do with MPJ 's assumption (that it could be too heartbreaking)  but of course I can't judge  :s) Maybe the film makers had just objective reasons for the delete. As for me, this scene would have been another agonizing detail  (and therefore I would have loved to see it in the movie !!!!). I can't get enough of that pain, it hurts so deep ...  no need to tell me I'm crazy  :-\\

The trailer shows some scenes which were not in the movie when I saw it...and I have seen it umpteen times .. 3 scenes to be precise.. 1. Jack standing on the bridge over the river, shirtless 2. Jack & Ennis in a pick-up(?) sitting next to each other 3. One guy and another younger guy (probably) looking at something far away... can someone please tell me if these scenes have been deleted in the actual movie?

Brilliant.  :_(

I don't want to rain on your parade but it was done before and all Ang Lee movies are final cuts with no deleted scenes available but this one that probably ''escaped'' the editing room...

I am not supposed to do this (as a moderator)  :-X

But you can download youtube videos online... http://keepvid.com/

I never posted this, right?  :-X :-X :-X

Quite heartbreaking, and really shows the poignancy of the scene, I wish they would have kept it.
