Those three seconds are part of what makes this movie so brilliant. To see the emotions he tries to hide most of the time...

I wished those three seconds could have been left in.   Ennis finally honored Jack, and understood how much Jack really did love him, and finally letting his owned bottled up emotion come out.

You are right, mahattangirl. IMHO, these three seconds would definitely make a difference, probably not the meaning of story though. Knowing Ennis's character, I thought the crying part would be better in the last scene after Alma Jr. left.

I think Ang Lee aimed for understatement above all.

Funny, but I had always assumed that he cried with the shirts in his hands, even if they did not show this explicitly.  The reason: his eyes were tearful when we see him come down with the shirts...

the understatements might be what makes this movie so great. It is not loud like some movies, but very tender at moments. That makes the pain actually come through more than when they put in one effect after the other.

We do feel somehow that the scene with the shirts was truncated, in a way, no?  Nonetheless, I do think was natural and expected for Ennis to lose it at that moment.

Me too. There were so many different things running through him- denials stripped away, realizations, regrets, the true extent of the loss perhaps really hitting him at that moment. When I first saw this clip months ago it destroyed me and watching it again had the same effect. We never needed to see it to feel it but it makes it more heartbreaking to me.

For me it's always been obvious he was crying when he found the shirts... he was already crying when he entered the room (close up, tear on left cheek).  The scene was already enough poignant so I could understand Ang Lee's choice at the editing... maybe he didn't want to push it?  As it is this scene is heart breaking... here I go again  :\'(

Yes, I find myself invariably crying anyway even before he discovers the shirts.  I think the current state of things is more than sufficient to touch our hearts to the core.

You know, when you think of that whole progression of scenes when Ennis visits Jack's parents' home, you're going to cry.  I find the home so bleak with its dingy white walls, lack of furniture, lack of decorations, curtains, subtle amenities most people have in their homes.  When I see Mom standing fiddling with her apron, quiet, obviously cowed by her husband, I immediately choke up.  Then when Ennis is sitting at the kitchen table, trying to keep it all together, and hears the old man speak denigratingly about Jack, the tears really come.  So, by the time Ennis goes to the room, handles the wooden horse he had carved, then finds the shirts, I am a MESS!  This is a real heart-breaaker.  I can't see Ennis' tears through my own!

I start during the confrontation scene and bawl right through to the end. No matter how many times I have seen that scene or him finding the shirts- the impact never lessens.

I don't know if I could have handled Ennis in a full-fledged cry at the end of the film.  At this point in the film I am so in tuned to his lonely, and empty state.  His watery eyes followed by "Jack I swear.." is more than enough to release my flood gates..again. :\'(

Yes he is... although we see him cry after "Jack, I swear" it is still very controlled.. not letting go... the 3 seconds is letting go...

Exactly, Esmelily ! He started to cry when he rang up Lureen, then he started controlling himself (which is OK, crying on the phone can be useless).
Yes, Tizi, if Ennis had cried in the final cut, it would still be true to his character.

So true.  Even if Ang Lee chose to delete this scene, we do see Ennis in tears at the the end. 

In the ss, we know that many times, his dreams of Jack end in tears.

in the SS it says ".. and somehow, as a coat hanger is straigthened to open a locked car and then bent again to its original shape, they torqued things almost to where they had been, for what they'd said was no news. nothing ended, nothing begun, nothing resolved".

this has always intrigued me so much - trying to find out the meaning behind these lines...

OT, but I just realized that the horse was the one Ennis had carved.  Why I didn't get that sooner, I have no idea.
