Jack Pouring Whiskey? -- Spoiler --
« on: Feb 07, 2006, 03:06 PM »
There is one scene when Jack was pouring the whiskey to his boots or the fire maybe?

I don't know what it was for? Thought?

Hello Ethan. Stumped on this one, I can't recall the context. Stephan

ethan, I can only recall him pouring whiskey into Ennis's mug while he warms his boots in the fire.  Perhaps I missed the detail you mentioned?

Jack loved whiskey, it seems ('where bluebirds sing and there's a whiskey spring').  IT would have been a waste to let his boots do the drinking! ;)

Was Jack pouring whiskey into Ennis's mug when he was warming his boots in the fire? If so, gosh where was I? After seeing it 6 times, I still have no clue.

Cowboy Cody, it was one of the scene before Ennis spoke about his family at the camp.

Ennis did before the first tent scene but this is not the context I have in mind.  :)

Yes, Jack poured Ennis some whiskey in that scene.

Thanks for clearing that up. Another reason to see BBM again.  ;D This movie is just amazing with all the details. I always thought Jack was just pouring whiskey into fire or onto his boots and am puzzled why because it just didn't make any sense.

Having read all your posts, I do have a vague recollection of that scene, Ennis talking about family. I thought the bottle was mostly empty and it was the dregs being shaken onto the fire.
Just have to go see it again soon  ;D Stephan

Since we are on the subject of whiskey, I remember the discussions on languagechat about the Old Rose Whiskey Ennis and Jack shared on the last night of their last meeting.  Some of the posts on languagechat claim that 'Old Rose' -- other than being a possible brand of alcoholic beverages -- is an indirect reference to their 1963 stay on Brokeback, and an allusion to 'stem the rose'.

Sorry for the slight aside here.  :)

I have a vague recollection of the scene.  My impression at the time was that Jack's boots were "burning" from sticking them in the camp fire and he was pouring the whiskey on his boots to cool them.  However, now that I think about it, that makes absolutely no sense!

whattttttt?
i defenitely think that Jack was pouring whisky into Ennis' mug while talking about their folks near the camp fire. Ofcourse - his boots was roasting in fire. But...... camera was taken off from it....... & focussed on the rest.

Yes Ethan.  he pours whiskey in Ennis' mug - and you can even hear Ennis thanking him (ok, it was just another Ledger mumble but it is actually a thank you).
I noticed that as being a bit of a weird scene. When Ennis comes back to the camp after his encounter with the bear, he drinks from the bottle. The fact they don't share the bottle is interesting as their level of intimacy is still evolving. You can also notice that Jack opens the bottle with one hand only.
I also like the way he moves his boot far and near to the fire trying to find a right place to warm hi feet without burning - very nice detal.
"I loved it. Shocking. Surprising. The guy who financed my movie did that too. He's a very mild mannered chap from Minnesota and we'd just screened the latest cut of my film and he asked if I wanted to see it. I was thinking, 'OK, this really square, straight guy,' and he showed me this movie. It's amazing.

jake - that was a great detail, it didn't register too much the first time as I was so stunned and in pain I could hardly navigate. My second time it seemed an effortless, but poignant way to say, I'm trying to get as comfortable as I can, but the fire here is too hot, over here too cold, where I can rest and be Warm...oh that's right in Ennis arms Jack!

That reminds me of one of Heath's quotes @ Oprah, discussing the first tent scene. Oprah acts naive and says "Oh i thought they were only trying to warm themselves up" and Heath replied "Well things warmed up pretty quickly".

OK. Here is the evidence.

Jack was pouring the whiskey to the mug. Somehow it looked like Jack was pouring it to the fire.

Oh my godness.  I just realized Jack is left handed!

I could never pour a beverage with my left hand.

Unless the movie frames were shown in mirror-reversal, why yes, Jack DID pour the whiskey with his left hand...

Hello tpe - Well. I am right handed and sometimes I do something with my left handed. (Not to argue). Yes Jack did.

Now I noticed when he was drinking beer with Ennis at the very beginning, he drank it with left hand.
