It's not me who find Jack homophobic, it is another member who replied to my post. In my opinion Jack was too ocupied searching for love from Ennis that he didn't mind so much about homophobia, even he was aware that Ennis's homophobia was the main reason for his decision not to live with Jack. At least it's the way I see it...

I think Jack would have risked it all for Ennis...Nothing mattered but his sweet life with Ennis but he knew how much Homophobia ruled on Ennis mind and he just could not convince Ennis to cope with that...Its such a pity

Sure, I know that fairytale, and the comparison is quite appropriate.

But someone replied to one of my posts very recently that Jack was homophobic too, and there was no way that Ennis and Jack would ever got to the point of living together...

I surely don't agree that anything would've stop Jack from making his dream come true... except the dream (Ennis) itself. (if you can understand my point). I mention this post because you and me are talking about 3 simple words here to remove the "splinter of mirror" in Ennis's eye, and this member is talking about a situation that has no possible mean of resolving it!

I can agree that the situation really remained unresolved and lead to the tragedy, but I like to believe that E&J weren't THAT FAR from "sweet life"!

Wow! I just rewatched the short Mexico scene and I did notice that Jack seemed cold and I could see what he was feeling in his eyes... He was somewhat happy that he found what he was looking for but there wasnt any love in his eyes like there was when he was with Ennis He probably felt really bad about it but was also really mad at Ennis for desterting him again after all that time...

Perhaps.  After all, Proulx did say that BBM was a study of homophobia in the pure land of the cowboy... 

As for the Mexico scene -- you could see that he was on edge.  Desperation is a good way to put it.  As I mentioned before, it reminds me of a poem by Cavafy, where the rejected lover leaves Alexandria for the brothels of Beirut, but cannot forget.  What I find so interesting about Jack in this scene is not the physical need to be satisfied, but the need to forget. 

And as Thoreau had said, he has the look of "quiet desperation" that just pulls on our heartstrings!

Sorry atalley, if I gave you the impression that there was happiness or satisfaction in his eyes.  There was none.  As I said in the first of the above posts for today, there is the look of "quiet desperation"  -- of a "cold steely resolve".

As for defeat -- I think I understand what you mean.  But I think it is not dejection we see -- more like a realization that he had to do what he knew would not give him satisfaction in the long run.  In this sense, it is a defeat -- in that he knew beforehand that he was not going to find what he really needed.

 I just feel Jack hated that he was forced to go there. After he dried his eyes in the truck there was a look of dread, (shaking his head) and resolve. He was devastated by being turned away by Ennis and also was dealing with the realization that it was'nt the marriage to Alma that stood in the way of him and Ennis being together after all, but it was Ennis himself. He was numb. , it was niether cute or sexy , just depressing imo.

After watching BBM again (20-30 times?? -or 40??) I have noticed two so obvious things for the first time.   

First, when Jack said to Ennis "This is more words than you've spoken in 2 weeks." His look after these words is so full of Love... I never before noticed Love, but last time it was so clear, that I ask myself - how deep is this movie that we have to remove the layers one by one ... and always find something new. Very lovely scene. Jack is ... uh... too cute to be true...

Another scene is after wrestling and accidental hit in Ennis nose - I knew how concerned Jack was when he comes and hug Ennis, but last time I sensed it much more. I could feel his love there as if it's my own emotion. Again - so deep movie, that each time I feel differently even I know each scene by heart.

Also, when "good angel" fell on the floor, I think how his shirt maybe sop the scents of mountain sage, and 20 years later still smells good. I know that it's not, but somehow I hope... for Ennis.

I believe that two scenes are a sign of their mutual affection - 1. when Ennis didn't allow Jack to clean his wound  and 2. the one we mentioned -when Jack noticed how Ennis talks more than in past 2 weeks.
Some people said that FNIT is unexpected, cos no sign before that, but for 2 young and unexperienced men, the sings were enough. Who wants to see them, will see.

And Jack was soooo cute when Ennis entered the tent. And so relaxed...

They needed the bit of clowning that Jack did immediately after -- to break the tension and the intense feeling that sort of strangled them after this.

Both glances are meaningful and revelled that something very strong was growing inside them.I agree in that this silence that follows these glances speaks volumes about this "something".And I also agree in that Jack's clowning was a kind of relief for the sexual tension that was clearly between them.The perfect prologue for FNIT.

Yes!  Especially in the quote "Ennis, quit hammering and get in here!" -- Jack says Ennis's name in such a wonderfully sexy way.  And the way we see him smile at the end of that scene (right before the actual FNIT scene) -- it is as if he is telling himself:  I have him now! -- where I want him!
