Actually, I was very inspired by these pics so I went and watched my copy of Monster's Ball yesterday... not all of it, just the bits where Heath is on. I paid special attention to that scene (not that I haven't before) and Heath is really good at it, VERY convincing. and it's not an easy scene to play, mind you...

Now, to keep on topic:
