Just found this thread (hey, I'm new here) and had to add my thoughts. This is my joint favourite scene, along with the SNIT, because it shows completely how strong the feelings were between Jack and Ennis and because this time it's Ennis taking the lead and opening himself up to Jack. The whole thing, from Ennis's anticipation to the obvious concern when he thinks Jack isn't coming, to the little smile when he hears the truck - and then "Jack f***in Twist"!!

When they hugged I thought maybe that would be all there was to it - but then you see the way that they look at each other after the hug and you just know there's much more to come. The passion, desire and urgency that Heath and Jake managed to convey in the scene is incredible and, obviously, the kiss itself (kisses?) is seriously hot. And then there's the way that Jack is still trying to kiss Ennis even as Ennis is trying to pull Jack's hands away - and the reassuring touch of Ennis's hand on Jack's face and *sigh* the nuzzle. The look on Jack's face as Ennis moves towards the appartment just finishes the scene perfectly - he's so shocked by what has just happened, so blown away by the fact that Ennis has show so much passion and clearly so desperate to get Ennis alone somewhere.....

I have a feeling I may wear out that bit on my DVD ;D

Noreins, you are my perfect excuse for talking about all my favourite scenes again!!!!

Of course this is up there for me as one of my favourites (along with SNIT, aint no reins, falling asleep like a horse.....oh, ALL the scenes!).  The passion on show here is unbelievable, so incredibly hot.  But you can feel it can't you?  When I saw it the second time, and you see Ennis pacing around the room, smoking and drinking, waiting for Jack, my friend turned to me and whispered "you can taste the anticipation, the waiting" and I think that is so right.  Alma and Alma jr might as well not be there for all the attention Ennis pays to them.  He's even taken the day off and is wearing his best shirt for this special day, that kind of confirms how Ennis is feeling!

And when Ennis hears the truck, he looks out of the window and that look.  To me that says "yep, there he is, the love of my life".

I love the hug, I love the fact the brokeback music starts up as soon as Ennis starts jumping down the stairs 5 at a time, and then that HUG.....oh god, have you ever seen a hug like it?   You hear Jack saying "son of a bitch", but it's the way Ennis scrunches his eyes so tightly shut, it's like he's scared if he opens them it will all be a dream.  They can't hug each other tight enough can they?  And then when they finally pull away from each other, Jack's eyes on Ennis's mouth and his hand on the back of his neck, you just know Ennis cannot resist! I am so glad Ennis took control and made the initial move because Jack needed that to know exactly how Ennis felt.  There is so much passion to this scene, the kissing is just the accumulation of all of that.  That kissing is so, so hot - I have watched this scene like a million times and NEVER get sick of it, am now having the pleasure of watching it in slo-mo at home!  The slo-mo thing is great actually, you get see them touching each other and the looks on their faces so clearly.  Their faces say it all, especially after the first kiss, when they realise what has happened and that they feel the same way.......I love the way Jack then takes control and pushes Ennis back into the wall and they are almost falling over each other to get to kiss each other, and Ennis grabs Jack's head to push himself further into him.

I love the way Ennis stops and looks around, kind of half-heartedly, like he feels that's what he should be doing, but Jack is desparately needing to kiss Ennis again.  I adore the nuzzle too......gets me every time.....so gorgeous.  I love the way Ennis, trying to regain some control, pushes Jack's hand away from him, but then almost straightaway touches Jack's face and then does the nuzzle.....it's like he is trying to keep touching Jack for as long as he possibly can.   And Jack's face is a picture.....he's totally blown away by Ennis isn't he?  I bet all he's thinking is "where's the nearest motel?".

Ok, so now I need a cold shower.   ;)

Heh heh - you bet that's what Jack's thinking ;D Pretty sure Ennis is thinking something along those lines too - especially when you see how nervy and excited he is when they go up to meet Alma. The nuzzle, and the way Ennis acts in the appartment all say "that kiss was just the start - wait till I get you alone"...

God, I really have to stop thinking about these scenes when I'm at work ;D

What I think is so poignant about this scene, too, is that it's the only time when we see Ennis and Jack together in one of their homes.  Ennis comes bounding down the stairs to embrace Jack, then they go upstairs together (figuratively climbing the mountain again, perhaps?), then after that--they're only together in the wilderness.  Literally and figuratively.  No wonder they come together with such fire in this scene.

OK, now *I* really must get back to work!  :)

Truly, City Slickin' Cowboy.  I can't think of another movie kiss that comes anywhere near it.  I love the way their faces scrunch up, almost as though they're so glad to be together--and so turned on by one another--that it's painful.  I love the way that their struggle to gain control again before heading back upstairs to say goodbye to Alma parallels the struggle for control from FNIT.  This time, though, Ennis's eyes are wide open--and he knows what he wants.

i think that is what the entire film is about, the fact that all they ever want is to be together and it shows so well here :)

Yes!!! Ennis knew what he wanted!! It was so clear!  If I had been Jack I would have been a little surprised too.  I believe Jack was hoping for a warm reception from Ennis, but this had to be better than what he hoped for.  This was a typical guy reunion until the moment they were looking closely at each other.  The passion took over and woooo eeeee!!! YEAH!!! <^(

I love this because this is the only time in the movie we see Ennis actually initiate the passion (I know he enters the tent SNIT, but he doesn't make the first move).  If that doesn't shout out "I love you, Jack and I've missed you, Jack," I don't know what does.  I think they literally succumbed to the passion and disappeared into each other at that moment.  I still can't believe they were able to pull themselves together like they did to go up to talk to Alma.  They were as jittery as a Mexican jumping bean; they couldn't wait to put their hands all over each other.  I bet that was the best sex of their lives.  Okay, I need to get my ice trays out.   :d)

Those two screenshots are just gorgeous - almost enough to make me change allegiences from Ennis to Jack (or maybe I should say Heath to Jake?!)

That's funny, I'm more of a Jack/Jake girl myself, but I would switch allegiances just long enough to have Ennis growl/whisper "c'mere" and slam me up against the wall like that!  :d)

I'd soon switch back though, when it's Jack's turn ;) I love how he's so stunned by Ennis kissing him like that, how it takes his breath away, but then, as soon as he gets his breath back, he looks at Ennis like "Yeah, anything you can do...", and then slams him against the other wall! Talk about intense, you can feel the heat coming off the screen :d)

I totally agree with what people have said about that kiss topping all the "best kiss" polls, not just now, but for years and years to come, I just can't imagine anything ever topping that :)
There was some open space between what he knew and what he tried to believe, but nothing could be done about it, and if you can't fix it you've got to stand it.

I don't think anybody said this yet...

When Ennis comes up to Jack, they're obviously both glad to see one another. But remember the last time Jack saw Ennis, Ennis just walked away and was cold. And Jack had been bruised by Ennis hitting him. Okay, that's all background.

So now watch the reunion scene again, and when Ennis first grabs Jack, for just *one little moment* Jack looks .... surprised, yes.... and also a tiny bit *frightened*, as if he thinks Ennis might hit him.

It's a neat moment, leading into the kiss.

"They seized each other by the shoulders, hugging mightily, squeezing the breath out of each other, saying, son of a bitch, son of a bitch, then, and easily as the right key turns the lock tumblers, their mouths came together, and hard, Jack's big teeth bringing blood, his hat falling to the floor, stubble rasping, wet saliva welling, and the door opening and Alma looking out for a few seconds at Ennis's straining shoulders and shutting the door again and still they clinched, pressing chest and groin and thigh and leg together, treading on each other's toes until they pulled apart to breathe and Ennis, not big on endearments, said what he said to his horses and daughters, little darlin."
The truth is... sometimes I miss you so much I can hardly stand it.

I think this is the one thing that does make this moment so believable, they are actually doing this the way it is described and not some silly hollywood kiss where all that meet are lips :)

Excellent observation.  After the embrace, Jack didn't know the direction Ennis was heading for a few seconds.  He was certainly taken by surprise.  Jack had no idea he was going to get that kind of reception.  I bet Jack figured he'd have to get Ennis liquored up good before he got so much of a peck on the cheek.  Boy was he wrong!  I think in this moment, Jack realized Ennis felt the same way about him as Jack felt about Ennis.

I was reading through this and don't have too much to add- I'm feeling the need to go watch this scene repeatedly.  ;)
After being apart for 4 years and merely existing- not living- they came together with such passion and urgency. I love that it's Ennis that initiates this kiss and Jack looks like he's going to cry at one point (at least to me). What a greeting! What a way to come back to life! And I do love how they did it as AP described. I can't get enough of this scene.
“What Jack remembered and craved in a way he could neither help nor understand was the time that distant summer on Brokeback when Ennis had come up behind him and pulled him close, the silent embrace satisfying some shared and sexless hunger."

I also thought Jack looked like he was going to cry.  It was probably the best moment of Jack's life.  I don't think he could have spoken if he wanted to.  There were no words.  I must sprint off to watch it again!

I have never really paid attention to how close they are here......mostly in films when , at least two straight actors playing gay, kiss they are not so, well, close...

Cain't ya just feel the tension??  :^^)
What is that spot of "white" just behind Ennis' thigh in this picture?  I've tried zooming, but then its out of the frame.  Thought at first it may have been his shoe, like maybe he had his left leg bet at the knee, with his foot against the wall, so I went back to the scenes when he's pacing the living room waiting for Jack...he has on brown boots.  Can anyone enlighten me?

This is the forest primeval.  The murmuring pines and the hemlocks, bearded with moss, and in garments green, indistinct in the twilight...but where are the hearts that beneath it leaped...

It's the railing (sp?) to hold onto as you go up and down the stairs :)

Looking at the screen capture here, I am struck by the way in which they are leaning on each other--you can see Jack leaning into Ennis so much that one leg seems to be off the ground.  I love the utter spontaneity, the passion, the way in which they completely dissolve into one another . . . .  <^(
