On FNIT, why does Ennis say to Jack "Why don't you, um..."?

Okay, so just now I was watching Borkeback Mountain (again) and I noticed something which I was surprised to realise that I had never noticed (or actually, heard) before, even though I've watched BBM countless times!  %&)

On the first night in the tent, when Jack moves Ennis's hand to his, umm *cough*, and Ennis jerks away, when they are looking at each other Ennis mutters "Why don't you, um..."

He doesnt finish this sentence, of course, but I was wondering if anyone else has picked up on this and could tell me what he is referring to in the quote...????

I don't think you heard wright... Ennis says " What are you doin'?"

I have to say that I have heard the same thing, even on the subtitles is has "why don't you, um...".  I am in agreement.

It's very difficult to understand what he says-not only in this scene,but almost always...-,since he talks muttering and in a rather close accent.In USA copy's subtitles they say "What are you doing",what,IMO,has a greater meaning in this moment.

Yeah, i thought it would have made more sense for him to say "What are you doing?", but I listenend to it over and over trying to decide what he relly says...then I realised I had subtitles  %&), and they said "Why dont you, um"

But I think I own the european version, so they have the skinny-dipping bit and a couple of small variations :P

a great mystery of the universe, I suspect  ^-^

But I'm really dying to know if there's any greater meaning behind these words so if anyone else knows PLEASE reply!

Just a note on subtitles -
They are notorious for being inaccurate and unreflective of the words actually spoken by the actors. There are several spots in BBM where the subtitles misrepresent the spoken words. (at least the English versions)

IMO - The phrase "Whut you doin'?" is very common usage in American vernacular, spoken when someone is questioning a suspicious or unfamiliar activity. Brilliantly interjected here by Heath with just the right amount of emotion.

I suppose so,even if I must rely on the subtittles;I must confess I don't understand a word ¡ However,if he really says this,for me has a logical meaning;he reacts in a surprised way,even if he wished that something like that could happen.In these cases,everybody can ask the other what he or she is doing,even if one knows it very well ¡.I don't know,but if Ennis had said something similar to "Why don't you,um...? (Why don't you touch me? Why don't you keep on holding my hand? Why don't you stay quiet,dumbass?...),wouldn't have it been a little contradictory with his first reaction?.JMHO.

I thought it would make more sense if he says "what r u doing?"...

BUT if he said "why dont you um" he could have meant something like "why dont you just go back to the sheep now before something very bad happens"

At this point he really likes jack as a person (and maybe more) so he doesnt want anything to happen between them which could mean Jack or himself getting into trouble, or perhaps worse, falling in love - the most blissful yet painful outcome of all

The line in the screenplay as presented in the book, Brokeback Mountain: Story to Screenplay, is "What're you doin'?" And that's what I hear in the film, although the words are drunkenly slurred as noted by rimasworld.
