Hmm...

probably the scene by the campfire on Brokeback, when Ennis is talking about his family, and Jack's listening. When Ennis is done, Jack looks up and has that sly smile on his face, and Ennis says "whut?" <^( I love how they look at each other for a few seconds <^(

I like the scene where they are having to go down from the mountain and Jack is standing by his horse gazing at Ennis sitting far out in a meadow. The look on his face just breaks my heart.

For me, another memorable "silent" scene comes early on in the movie. This occurs on Jack's first night on Brokeback. He is outside his little pup tent smoking a cigarette. He looks somewhat wistfully down the mountain where he can just make out the fire at Ennis's camp. The fire, the separation between them, both form a significant prologue to what is to come or to be overcome.

Yes, and then later when Jack rides off saying no more beans and Ennis is in the creek washing the coffee pot he looks up to where Jack is with the sheep. I can't really quite grasp all he's thinking of but it is a very memorable expression that stays with you.

Rimasworld, I completely agree.

I suspect both scenes are built on one sentence in the short story:

"During the day Ennis looked across a great gulf and sometimes saw Jack, a small dot moving across a high meadow as an insect moves across a tablecloth; Jack, in his dark camp, saw Ennis as night fire, a red spark on the huge black mass of mountain."

I love all the silent scenes you have remarked, but I also love the first scenes together, when they first meet outside Aguirre's trailer. This game of glances and gestures,of attraction and rejection,of boldness and shyness; this situation that insinuates what will happen later because the seed of "something" is planted from this very moment onwards (even if they, specially Ennis, still don't know it...).Great performances ¡  <^(
Ennis’s eyes gone bright with shock, mouth opening then closing again. “Love?” Ennis said finally, voice strangling in his throat.

Jack smiled sad. “Yeah, Ennis. Love.” Leaned forward and kissed Ennis’s temple, whispered, “What’d you think it was, all this time?”

The meeting scene on the mountain the day after the first night in the tent is the essence of the whole movie. The two lovers don't embrace or don't even dare to look into each others eyes. Torn by contradictory feelings of love and guilt they don't dare to express their feelings. Not much is said. Silence speak loudly. When I watched this scene for the first time, it was obvious to me that this would never turn out well - despair - I felt like screaming.

Borealis, it's exactly what I felt too, you said it really so well! They didn't dare to express their feelings whereas they were already so deeply in love, it's so sad! If only they could have express their love, I hate this homophobic society where they both grew up!  ^*)

Great post Borealis! Indeed, at that moment we feel that things will be difficult for our boys. Ennis and Jack are distant and not talkative. There is such a heavy and weighty atmosphere. The colors are darker, there is something gloomy in the air. Very sad moment :-\\
