I get the feeling the Lureen more than knows...  The book descibes her as 'polite but as cold as snow' when talking to Ennis.  In addition, JAck said that he had been having a fling with a rancher's wife and Lureen would kill him if she found out.  Do you reckon that its possible that Jack said he was gonna leave Lureen to be with a man and she got some heavies onto him to take care of him?

Sure adds a sinister edge to the plot huh?

Is the memorable "embrace from behind" a flashback or was it the next day when they were ending their final fishing trip? For some reason, I thought it was the latter with Ennis riding off on his horse...I bet you are right.  Weren't they wearing the BBM clothing in that scene?  This confirms my passion for wanting to see this a third time; subtleties that I didn't catch...

Its a flashback to their first summer together..Ennis says to Jack something like I'll see you tonight or in the morning..when he is finished with the sheep. That was a stunning scene...the center piece of their motivations for the next twenty years at least.

Thanks, Bnjmn3 for the clarity.  I will go to see this tomorrow and will try and pick up on more of the details.  I absolutely agree with you on the significance of the scene.

The memorable "embrace from behind" is a flashback from Jack when he and Ennis were herding the sheep. It is a scene where my heart melts.  :'( :'(

Interesting point.  I initially thought the red mark of stray nail polish might be a reference to 'blood' on Lureen's hand.  But I think this is a bit too extreme an interpretation...

I thought the stray nailpolish plus the messy way it was applied was a reference to how she'd be affected by Jack's death. I mean, after your husband has died you're usually too shaken up to apply your nailpolish perfectly. So maybe she cared more about him than we thought

I doubt it ... the book suggests that she was polite but her voice was as cold as snow ... not the impression you'd get from someone overly gutted about her husbands death.  Jack was divorcing her anyway so she woulda disliked him.  In addition she is very cold in the film aswell ...

natalia, I think your's is the most likely interpretation.  stickler's comments are also on the mark, in my opinion.  Lureen was probably bordering on indifference at that point; i.e., with regard to maintaining (even the pretense of?) a happy marriage with Jack.

I got watery eyes just by reading your description of scenes. If all PBS join for a viewing, we can probably flood the movie theatre.

Well i gotta say my first viewing was to get a general feel of the story...i could not focus on anything...just live the moment!

My second viewing was more concentrated on Ennis' character! Heath did such a great job! I wanted to get all the little smiles (there are a lot of them) and all the little looks...

My third viewing was focused on Jack and Lureen...
coz i have to say Anne Hathaway did a great job too!
That last scene on the phone was her best. The way she conveyed Lureen's feelings was amazing.

When she answers the phone, she knows who he is as soon as he says his name, but still questions him, then she mentions the fishin' or huntin' trips!
When Ennis asks about Jack's death, she recites that little story by heart, she must have said it times and times again, and goes through it without breathing.
When she talks about the ashes and brokeback, she can barely hold it, and i personally believe that when Ennis mentions that they had spent a summer there, she knows, she knows but she has to be brave, just like Alma had been for years. Both women had to be strong in some way, and Lureen does a better job than Alma.

Does Lureen have a hand in Jack's death, i doubt it, he was a great father...and they respected each other...

Anyway that last scene with Lureen is great, I'll have to see BBM again, just for it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
