Response from ennisjack.com
« on: Mar 06, 2006, 08:13 AM »
The unthinkable did happen at the oscar and we understand your anger, frastration and disappointment. The oscar didn't appreciate BBM like us and many film critics/organizations who have awarded BBM the best picture.

The best award of BBM is to bring many wonderful souls around the world to this forum and to share our lives, love and passion for BBM. Sure, it is upsetting and we could not stop asking ourselves why the oscar didn't go to BBM. However, it is not our problem and let's leave it to the voting members for a reality check because in our mind, BBM has won the best picture.

In a time like this - Ang, Heath, Jake, Michelle, Anne and all the cast and crew of BBM need your support. We are still running the thank you campaign and Riverton postcard campaign. Please join us and we thank you for your continuous support for this forum and BBM.

The ennisjack.com team is working on several other organized efforts. We will post them with more details soon.

Finally, we like to share with you the list of awards and nominations BBM has received. Most importantly BBM has received the award of our hearts.

Thank you ethan.  I shall try to pull myself together to show how much I love BBM.  Please forgive me if I am still too emotional to act with any coherence.  I dread even the sympathy of my office mates, who know my great love for this film.

I held off on sending a "thank you" before as I had a feeling this-being passed over at Oscar time-might happen. Now I think we can really make a difference by giving tangible expression to our gratitiude. Count us in.

Ethan, thank you so much for the overview of the wins for Brokeback Mountain!  Yes, letters and cards from everyone here to the BBM addresses given here in the forum by Chrissy would be most appreciated......and we should remember, too, that though the Academy Awards have high visibility, they are just that: a local LA academy with an agenda, whereas the Golden Globes are designated by the foreign press, and thus world-wide! Brokeback Mountain will forever be the best and the favorite world wide for 2005-2006.....and,as you said, all awards aside, Ennis and Jack will forever reside in our hearts, and that's what really counts.

BBM had received many awards in the past few month. It's the best movie of the world already. Oscar is only a  small circle election. It's control by the old mind people and great American idea. We need not to be frustrated and disappointed. We are proud of BBM. I just want to say that Ang Lee is the representative of Chinese. All Chinese are proud of him.

Thank you for this post, ethan. I was shocked last night with the result at the Oscars, but what can you do. I'm looking forward to participating in the other campaigns you guys are organizing, and thanks so much for that, by the way. I didn't plan to do it, but now I think I'll send more Thank You postcards soon.

I know everyone is shocked and angry so - big hugs to everyone. What matters is what the movie means to us, and the way it touched and changed so many people all over the world. Remember that. :)

Ethan - Thanks. Time to step up to the plate and hit this sucker out of the park. The Academy is use to poeple back talking....tough. Send those cards, go see the movie...AGAIN, buy what you can to support BBM.

I'm not buying any other film crap the academy as a group will endorse over the next year. I'm keeping my hard earned $$$ out of their hands.

tpe,

I'm listening to the acoustic songs by Santaolalla in my office at the moment, also fighting back the tears.  I still don't fully comprehend the meaning of this movie to me.  I think part of everyone's anger is why doesn't everyone feel the same way about BBM.  It is such a personal and emotional experience, and perhaps that is the problem, it is too personal, too private for some of us.  (Sorry, went off topic.)

Thanks Kindred and Lilie.  I wish I had a better handle on myself right now, but I just don't.  I'm trying, but I am just not cutting it.  I've always prided myself with being the rational, analytic type, and this entire fiasco has hurt me so much I cannot begin to tell you both how bad it is inside.  Stupid, pretentious, too self confident me.  I deserve every bit of this.

I apologize if I am off topic.  I don't think I can help it right now.

tpe,
This forum wouldn't be the miracle that it is without your wonderful posts shedding light on aspects of the film/script/story that I had not noticed until you pointed them out. I don't know what else to say to help you feel better...well one possibility-one positive outcome from all the bitter disappointment and anger being expressed last evening was more creative uses of the word f**k than I have ever seen gathered in one place before. ;D A testimony to the inventiveness of the membership. And remember how fortunate we are to live in this time when such a movie could be made and embraced by so many different people from all over the world. A few decades ago it would not have been even remotely possible. We have received a priceless gift my friend. Try to hang on to that...
Peace!

Thanks Ethan for all your work on the site and for your tireless positive energy!

I think the thank you cards is such a touching idea and one that will let the cast and crew know what I think they have an inkling about already: this is no longer just a film it is the beginning of a cultural phenomenon.

And I still want to take you up on the offer of seeing BBM in the theater 'cause now I am afraid it will be gone sooner rather than later.

Earlier this morning after trying for 2 hours to get on this site, it came to me that ennisjack.com and the moderators have now started to be noticed,
that they ain't going anywhere soon,
the severs kept stating the site was overloaded,
it tell how popular the simple fact that BBM has lost at the Oscars
has now become our Blessing in disguise,
we must make it our heartfelt goal in reaching beyond the spectrum of stupidity hollywood and its ignorance imposedon us
and show them that sooner than later this battle will end with our victory,
 to our hearts content.
Lest us not be dissuaded by their appalling decision
and keep our goals clear and definitive,
Love is our weapon lets used to all ends,
thank you ennisjack.com you have now ventured into infinity

I would like to join in the Thank You Cards... All the actors and writers and producers involved were, yes, brave, to be a part of this movie that many, many  people are adamantly against without even having seen.

While I wished BBM would have won all the award it was up for at the Oscars, I am glad we didn't leave empty handed.  There are lots of theories floating around on why who won what, but it's obvious to me, with all the press, media attention, jokes and references in our culture, Brokeback is a special movie.
We will always have Brokeback.

While I wished BBM would have won all the award it was up for at the Oscars, I am glad we didn't leave empty handed.

All last week my thoughts went back to The Color Purple and how such a strong movie with a ton of nods walked away with nothing, and so I let out an audible sigh of relief when BBM took the first award for score.  Dropped a few tears, actually.  A "split decision" at the Oscars, as I heard it described in the media, at least wasn't a defeat.

There are lots of theories floating around on why who won what, but it's obvious to me, with all the press, media attention, jokes and references in our culture, Brokeback is a special movie.

Had we also won best picture, the story would have been that BBM won the predictable awards.  Ho hum, probably not much follow up, not much buzz.  As things turned out, there's still a good deal of talk out there about BBM versus Crash and if other forces were at work.  So there is indeed a small bright side to this.  The only other way BBM would have had this much buzz would be if it had swept all eight...and while I would have L O V E D that to happen, it was very very unlikely.  Jake was a long shot, and Michelle and Heath were viewed as solid but not close #2's in their categories by many.

So while it still hurts to lose best picture, things could be much worse!

Yes, the buzz in the media since the Academy Awards is giving more attention to Crash AND Brokeback Mountain. The win for Crash has already been a bit undermined, and the esteme for BBM heightened! We know which one will last the test of time......

You know it was interesting, I saw it again last night and damned if I didn't hear like 3 people say they wanted to see it
due to the buzz and one would think at this point it has to be Oscar buzz.

Wow I am still amazed Oprah had so much to do wtih Crash's win, I am not thrilled with her right now
after the Frey thing, I mean yes she took back what she said but it was like she had to attack him
cause SHE blew it not responding properly.  Oprah is becoming the pop culture queen, not the
leader of truth she tries to make herself out to be.

Even though I knew it was a predicted long shot, I actually started crying when Heath lost out to PSH!

(By the way, my 90 year old Mom started crying on the phone with me this morning about BBM's losses, because she knew how important the film is to me! Isn't that the sweetest thing! She did see the film too (with my sister) and when we later spoke of it, she cried at that time too, saying how sad it was!)

Yes it was an upset, a surprise and a disappointment that we did not get Best Picture.

My own theory of that is that Crash has such a huge cast that each of them naturally had a large circle of influence with their fellow voters, so numbers did it. Also I saw a reference in the New York Times to an idea that "everyone" believed that BBM was going to win, so that gave individual voters the idea that they could vote for a different picture, ie, BBM was gonna win anyway, let me vote for this other picture to balance. And so many did that, that the balance tipped and was a surprise to even those who actually voted for Crash! I like that theory 'cuz it affirms that everyone believed BBM was the better movie!

Also, I do NOT like all the negative I read here Sunday night which automatically assumed that BBM was voted AGAINST, versus another picture voted for. I am well aware that prejudice and homophobia exist and it is also reasonable to assume that SOME of the voting academy are prejudiced and homophobic against our film, but it is unlikely and counter-productive in my opinion, to assume that anyone who didn't vote for BBM was motivated by homophobic prejudice. That just can't be so, especially since we are talking about Hollywood and the film industry, a community that is PREDOMINANTLY more liberal than conservative, though that element exists there too of course.

People have a right to their opinion, and I prefer to assume that the voting academy voted based on an objective opinion of the films and performances evaluated as films and performances and not as the subject matter of that film and performance.

Just my two cents.

Again, Ethan, let me take this opportunity to thank you for creating and maintaining this wonderful community.
I hope it is here for a long long time! BBM lives! And Ennnis and Jack live while we are here!

MY PHILOSOPHY DISCLAIMER: All my comments concern the MOVIE and the content and inferences obtained there. All interpretations, projections, speculations, and opinions about plot and characters are based SOLELY on the content of the movie. They can not be argued or debated by quoting the printed short story. A comparison of the two media is an interesting discussion but must be a separate discussion.
