Kenny,

I agree you could warn them about the intimate scenes. I am straight as are my friends who have seen the movie and not one of us had a problem with it. We all agreed that that reunion kiss was the hottest thing we have seen! I agree with Aimi15- this story transcends sexuality. I giggled at your post about needing to confirm that you were not crazy- that's exactly how I wound up here. I never had anything impact me like this.

Wow, even straight females thought it was hot? Yowza!

Of course they did. Two good looking straight male actors giving one convincing performance!
When it comes to viewing and acknowledging passion women are usually gender-blind.

Well, here's what happened.

Tonight, I took it over to my grandmother's house to watch with her. I told her what the movie was about (surprisingly, she had heard of it, but didn't know what it was about). I warned her about the love scenes, and she was a little turned off. Gay, straight, she's not a fan of 'love scenes' in movies. So, I promised her I would zoom past the first love scene. The makeout/kissing scenes were fine for her, though.

When we first started watching it, she was giggling a little bit. Not in the "ewww" way, but just in the sense that it wasn't something she was used to seeing, so it was a little funny. As the movie went on, though, I noticed her paying closer attention to the tenderness, and by the time the movie was halfway over, she was completely quiet (except for asking a random question now and again what was coming up -- a sign she was interested in the story).

When it came to the shirt scene, where Ennis pulled the shirts out of the closet and held it to his chest, I looked over and her mouth was wide open... she was totally engrossed. And the final scene, "Jack, I swear..." I looked over and saw tears in her eyes. I think she really liked it, heh.

Afterwards, I took her out to get some fast food to eat, and I could tell she really wanted to talk about the movie. She kept asking little things about how long the movie took to film, if it was based on a true story, things like that. So, even after it was over, she was still thinking about it. So, it left an impression.

Just thought you'd all be interested in knowing what her reaction was, heh.

Excellent Kenny.  I hope my relatives from Canada will be similarly affected when they visit this summer   :D

Kenny, I went to the theater 21 times to see this film.  By the time I reached my 7th viewing it was obvious that most of the audience was straight.  I don't remember a time when there weren't at least a few people noticably affected by the film.  It doesn't surprise me that your grandmother found the story worth discussing.  It's such a positive testament to the impact of this film.

Good for you and your Grandma, Kenny.  And thanks for sharing your experience with us!

Don't be surprised if you and your Grandma are discussing this movie a few weeks...er, months from now.  It's multilayered and, as McMurtry says, a story that's never been told.  It's huge, much more than just a movie or story:  it's epic, larger than any Hollywood production or prize-winning story.  Think of the stories and myths handed down through generations...this is one of them.  It is ours.  It has entered our consciousness and will take on a life of its own, much like myth.

Hell, I've even had a few (verifyably) straight male friends call it 'hot!'

Were they straight as arrows?  By the way, how does one verify a guy is straight?   :o ;D

Ha, ha...good question.  Perhaps they are just non-practicing bisexuals?  I don't know...  These are guys who, as far as I know, are straight but have no issue, no reservation or contention, with gay sex, men kissing etc.  While not quite ubiquitous on every avenue and in every cafe in Portland, it isn't an uncommon sight.  I think I'm fortunate to live in a city where a certain number of people (but probably not the majority) are quite comfortable with sexual diversity (including the whole range, if you will).  This changes from district to district, of course, and many of the problems that exist elsewhere exist here, too.

I bought this yesterday and it was my only 3rd time seeing it. The first 2 times I sobbed uncontrollably after it was over. This time I never shed one tear. Weird.

WOW!  It just occurred to me...maybe I could move to your county and get a job verifying that men are straight.   :o :o  I wonder if they would let me keep those that aren't.  ::)

THAT'S IT!!  Before you can get a marriage license we have to find out if you are straight.  Please step into the next room and George will take care of you.   ;D ;D ;D ;D

Take 'em to a sexologist and have 'em certified.
There was some open space between what he knew and what he tried to believe, but nothing could be done about it, and if you can't fix it you've got to stand it.

Ennis, riding against the wind back to the sheep in the treacherous, drunken darken light, thought he'd never had such a good time, felt he could paw the white out of the moon.
