how could I not notice. such a wonderful scene. it really got me the first time I watched the movie.....I hate it when Ennis' cries, I really do. although I hate it even more when Jack does. oh god, I'm gonna cry. :'(

With Jack, it is when he drives back after he is rejected by Ennis after the divorce.

With Ennis, it is when he comes down from Jack's room.

For me, these two scenes evoke the meaning of sorrow. They are related: it is for one that that the other sheds tears. They are connected even in that.

May I also add: in the first scene, these are tears of love rejected; in the second, these are tears of lost love regretted. The dichotomy is most deep, most powerful, most moving.

Indeed the above must be true. You cannot show the compassion SHE showed at the sight of Ennis's tears if there was no UNDERSTANDING on her part of what all this meant to him.

Ennis's tears tell us a lot about her.

She knew that those tears were for the love of her son.

She cherished them accordingly.

on another thread lead into a audio tape of intervies with actress playing Jack's mother whe states that Annie Proulx wrote that Jack's mother knew he, Jack, was gay. Apparently Annie felt the actress was perfect in this scene developed the character just as Annie felt it should be.

The time before last when I watched BBM I noticed Ennis tears when I never had before, except at the end of their argument when he's obviously sobbing so heartbreakingly. The other times really got to me because previously I'd always felt that Ennis just couldn't let any emotion--other than anger--out. I sadly underestimated him. I saw the tears in the bedroom and when facing Jack's mother. I even think I saw some wetness when he was talking to Lureen, although it might have been the light. The one that really surprised me in this viewing was when I saw two fat tears actually fall out onto the ground when Ennis turns around after Jack says the "quit you" line. I rewound 3 or 4 times, just to be sure. That's when I just lost it! :'( Jack hugs him, and I wanted to hug him, too...

(Sorry,OT--I believe Jack's mother knew about the significance of the shirts. When Ennis comes down the stairs and catches her eye, she gives a little nod, and reaches for the paper bag--oh, yeah, she knew. She never once questions it. She knows her boy is with his love. When she tells him to come back and visit again, she knows this man is all that's left of her son's love, in essence another son to her. I can't stand it--my heart breaks for her loss. As a mother, this scene had an incredible impact on me...I love Jack's mother. BTW, have you ever wondered why she is the only character who doesn't have a first name? I'm sure there's a good reason, but it seems a shame. The guy who worked with Ennis shoveling the gravel on the road crew had a first name-Timmy, but not Jack's mother!)

Ronnie, I believe that the more you watch the movie the more things you will pick up. At least that seems to be the way I am. Once I notice something and don't have to concentrate on that area or what is being said or the tone of voice, etc., I look someplace else and notice something.

When Ennis tells Jack he is nothing and nowhere I think that is so heartbreaking. Add to that the tears and I am a mess.

Ronnie, Mrs. Twist got billing over Mr. Twist and she does have a first name...it's Mom, and she will be Mom Twist to us all, forever. :'( I have yet to hear anyone say they did not love her.

Thank you, chameau, for the photos...just looking at the top one brings tears to my own eyes. Thinking of how heartwrenching it must have been to find those two shirts, realizing finally and fullly just how much he loved Jack--and then to have to stand there and listen to his father spew about the family plot--the old ba***rd

I love the idea that after you notice something in BBM, your mind is freed up to see new things--incentive to keep watching. As if I need any!!

Yes, thank you -- the photos are beautiful and your observations are lovely. They break my heart, yet give me hope, too -- because Ennis and Mom really did connect heart-to-heart, and they both needed it.

( Ennis Crying ) You will see the real Crying scene that should have been in the movie But was cut different I myself believe this one was better and made you feel the lost of jack and the love Ennis felt for him.

Oh yes...every minute of Ennis with Jack's mother together is precious. I don't think about this scene a whole lot -- too sad -- but it's surely one of the finest of the film. There is so much wordless communication between these two.

This is the great strength of the movie. For example, we can watch it without fully understanding what Ennis mumbles during the great scenes, but his tears tell us everything, and much much more...

You know what I love about coming here new and reading the threads from the beginning (if one has the time), is we can see how our feelings evolved, from all the rawness at the very beginning. There was so much we had to digest and discuss and share feelings about. There still is, as far as I'm concerned. I am no way finished talking about this movie, this love story.

Agreed. Jack has a number of great scnenes where he cries. But we tend to forget the Ennis is at the verge of tears so many times -- particularly in the last scenes of the movie.

Some are very quiet scenes, but very moving nonetheless.

I recall Jack crying only once and Ennis cried four (maybe more) times. I think Jack is emotionally stronger and knows what he really want while Ennis has more conflict in him.

The drive to Juarez is, of course, the great cry scene for Jack. But I think he also cries at the final embrace in the last meeting. Still, what you say is true: that he was more in control of himself and his desires. That is why we feel for him in those scenes when he breaks down and cries.

That scene was one of the saddest. I would have loved those tears to be more of happiness and joy for Jack after the divorce. It was hard to watch . I could've killed Ennis.....well at least hurt him for causing this. Sorry dude, but that was WRONG!
