That seems so true to me; it's not until Jack dies that Ennis realizes they shared this dream, perhaps, so he carries it on.  "Jack, I swear": that I'll always love you, but also that I will remember your dream and stay faithful to it.  :(   :\'(

Exactly.  He is alone, yet not exactly lonely.  Jack is with him, in a dream (remember the beginning of the short story: "he is suffused with a sense of pleasure because Jack Twist was in his dream").  Beautiful, tpe.

Yes, I can't help thinking that in a strange way, the film was faithful to the spirit of the short story's dream ending...

I agree; that's one of the miracles of this film, that the screenwriters, director, actors were able somehow to capture the heartbreaking beauty and atmosphere of the original story.  :)

I concur. I have never seen a film stay so true to its source material while expanding its themes and opening them up to a whole new level. And to make a short story into a 2hr14min movie without changing Anything at its core is amazing to me!
