it's in the final scene on the mtn, before ennis says he can't meet again until november. they are sitting around a fire, looking at the lake. sharing whiskey. any ideas on what it is? or is it fictional?

The whiskey was "OLD ROSE", The original bottle/prop was sold on Ebay. Not certain if there is or ever was an "OLD ROSE" whiskey but an internet search would probably answer that Q.

This has been partially discussed in the old thread dealing with the phrase "Stem the rose". According to a discussion in languagechat, the whiskey brand was probably a reference to that phrase used by Aguirre.

I'm not sure what kind of whiskey it is, but for some reason I see Jack and Ennis as Jack Daniels drinkers.

Jack Daniels opened a few years before 1963.

From the short story, it was part of the supplies, if I recall correctly.

In the ss they drink n=both beer and whiskey, brands unidentified - likewise the source - but presumably they must have been part of their supplies - they have a quart bottle at one point and couldn't have brought that up with them to last for months, surely? But it seems odd that Aguirre would pay for alcohol - the rest of their food - beans, potatoes, coffee, flour, canned peaches - seems pretty basic and evidently cheap.

They probably bought it themselves from their wages.As regards 'Old Rose' the only American whiskey with a similar title,which might be where the idea for the name could have originated from, is this company. $:-\\$

The R. M. Rose Co. was no small-fry outfit. Rose himself was a prominent citizen and his company, which regularly advertised in newspapers and appeared in the annual Atlanta City Directory, prided itself on being "distillers and dealers of the oldest, richest and best wines, liquors and brandies". They also published and advertised their product names, which included Rose's Old Georgia Corn Whiskey, Rose’s Mountain Dew, and Old Reserve Stock corn whiskeys, and Rose’s Pure Peach and Virginia Apple brandies. They were also proud to be the sole distributors of Atlanta Spirit Rye. .

I always wondered what they put in the bottles.. surely they can't drink real whiskey while shooting a movie.. so what was it? apple juice? some colored water??

A very long time ago I was told it was tea. Not sure if they still use tea or not but I see no reason to change if it worked then.

I had a very bad experience with Mr. Jack Daniels on an empty stomach, please don't get me started,I think Jim Beam could have been there choice it's a lot mellower. They sure could put whatever the brand was away ..like water.

Given how cash strapped they were I'd guess they had to settle for the cheapest brand rot-gut they could get, Mr. Daniels and Mr. Beam are usually pretty dear. This pint prop bottle sold for $2,010.51 on ebay last May '06. Unfortunately the picture of the bottle isn't available anymore, but you could clearly see the name in ebay auction listing. As I recall it was something like Black Velvet, or Old Velvet, it had a black and gold label. Of course it's not as famous (or infamous) as the "Old Rose" 5th they drank from in '83, harking back to "stemming the rose".

Yes , I used my *zoom* option in the scene where Ennis returns from the bear And it appears to be Black Velvet, a Canadian blended whiskey, bottled for Barton imports of Chicago, Il. Aged 3 years and is 80 proof.

Until I looked closer in the movie, I just assumed for some reason that Ennis and Jack would be Jack Daniels drinkers. I'm not sure why, it just seemed natural

My husband brought some back from the US with him once; the Americans we were sitting with were somewhat taken aback and gave us the distinct impression that JD wasn't a drink for middle-class people - not because it isn't Scotch but because of those who drank it in the US. I have not the faintest idea about any of this as everything from superemarket stuff to 15-year-old single malt tastes like boiled rotting rope to me. I would have been perfectly happy if they'd been drinking Dr Pepper or better Mountain Dew.
