Ennis and Jack wouldn't that we speculate about their sexuality. I think that they refuse any sexual label. They want to be themself (..remember when they say to be not queers...they are not two gay repressed..): two man loving each other. Of course they have to maintain an heterosexual style of life but where they are really themself is BBM. I cant see Ennis or Jack in a gay contest (especially Ennis). That is their particular way to love refusing any label that society want for them.
Love and attraction between Ennis and Jack is the basic, pure, condition which characterize every kind of love because they love each other for what they are.

MAH GAWD! All you have to do is look at Gene Shalit then ask yourself, Who's on crack now?

Jack's character was a man who found himself attracted to other men, but confined by society to a certain straight life. When I read the book, my immediate thought was...Yup, Jack likes men, always has. My gaydar went off like the foghorn on the Queen Mary.

You are just too funny, Cowboy.  Gene Shalit on crack, yeehaw!

IMO, it doesn't matter whether they're gay, straight, bi, whatever.  What matters is that they love each other (expressed or not), and how their lives are affected because of that love.  Trying to fit them into a category kinda dilutes the impact of the movie, at least for me.

I haven't read Gene Shalit's review of BBM, but would like to, and am interested in why he sees Jack as a "predator"?  I always thought Shalit was kinda out there, anyway, and likes to shock people with his reviews, more than anything.  Does anyone have an easy link to it?  Otherwise I can Google it.  Thanks!

Cowboy, you are funny and spot-on!  The man is just really unappealing and he promotes that impression, for me, at least, with comments like the one he said about Jack.

Jack was not a "predator" by any means. As CherryCake mentioned, he was attracted to Ennis, and "felt him out" to see if maybe the feeling was recriprocated.  People do that all the time, and it doesn't by any means make them predators.  I've done it, and I don't consider myself a predator.  According to Shalit, though, I guess I would be.  Watch out, y'all!   ;)

Also, I got the feeling that Jack had experience with another man before he met Ennis.  I got that impression from both the book, and how Jake G. played Jack (or was directed to by Lee).

Only a very personal view, with no thought that others should think this too, but I like
the movie better not trying to figure out how 'gay' they were.  To me they both were
capable of sexual attraction to both females and males, which is more in common with the
rest of humanity than many people might want to admit.

As far as behavior is concerned, Jack had more experience with other guys than Ennis
did, but in other circumstances it might have been the other way around.

I wouldn't want to see the movie in a 'gay' place where everyone is thinking it is a 'gay'
movie.  I think it's a movie for everyone, including hooting homophobes (though I'd
rather be in a quiet audience).  I saw a 1 PM show on Sunday when many in the
sudience were old married couples.

Yes, I would agree Jack was more experienced with guys...

btw, tireiron, I love your screen name...it's so neat that people are getting named for icons from BBM.  Although I get sad when I think about Jack and the tireiron... :( :(

The reason I picked the name of course was not that i wanted the name of what might have killed Jack, but
because it was at the center of the ambiguity in Ennis's mind about how he should or should not, could or
could not, live his life.  The tragedy, as I see it, was that Ennis couldn't break free of what had been
inflicted on him by his father and the ignorant hatred of that time and place.  Not even Jack's towering
love could free him, until it was too late.  The tireiron is the symbol, to me, of the iron grip that ignorance
has on everyone, in one way or another.

Was Jack Gay?/ Physical attraction between men?
In response to a little prompting from manhattangirl on another thread, I start this thread  I asked ... Was Jack Gay?

This is a question that's intrigued  me for a long while.  Frankly, I'm an Ennis girl, but Jack is just about as complicated .  It has been touched upon breifly in other threads, I had it in mind back when I started a thread called " How Did Jack and Ennis Really See Each Other?  Much has been made of Ennis's sexuality , a hotly debated thread dedicated to it , but what about Jack?
imo, the gaze in which he held Ennis totally captive with in FNIT,  says "yeah Ennis... I am". So, how did Jack  honestsly see himself sexually? Here's my take:

He, like Ennis married a woman  too and had a son. But outside of that , it was  the company of men he obviously preferred. Ennis, a male,  being his number 1 preference of course , he was in love with him, but there were other males, Randall, the rodeo clown, and male hustlers, in Mexico, when he could have very well paid for the company of women....Jack's father alluded to Jack coming back and *building a cabin *which meant that Jack ,was  at one point,   may have been  planning  on living at LF with one of these two men. Never spoke of a woman on the mountain during campfire talks, where most 19 yr old guys can't wait to relay their....ahem... latest "conquests"... to their freinds.  Instead he spoke of father's failures, his mother and her religion, rodeoing...etc. He was different.

And ladies,  be honest now, if you could put yourself in Ennis's place in those opening scenes .would'nt you feel a *comon* coming on? I mean the way he practically preened himself across that truck and the stare? ...Jesus!  so open and daring. then secretly looking at Ennis through the sideview window while he shaved. It was down right sultry. I think he was saying from the beginning .." this is who I am".  Am I wrong ? Was there a physical attraction there from the start.? Could  Jack look at Ennis and say to himself  " damn, he's hot " just like a woman would? Or is it different for men? These things are no means the sum of Jack as a whole, but personally I think he was gay. did'nt have the issues Ennis had with it.  Some say that Ennis was only capable of falling in love with Jack , actually I go back and forth on it and it's definitly open for speculation,, but could the same be said about Jack?

Both of their sexualities were ultimatlely tested by  marriages to Alma and Lureen. They both now had something to compare their unique love to. After only 4 yrs, he'd had enough of the Newsomes , felt he did'nt belong in that place. and he   sure seemed to be more of a novice with Lureen in the back seat of that car than he  with Ennis in FNIT,.
With whom did Jack  feel that  he was most happiest? It's obvious,  Both marriages to women failed because these two men  already fell in love and could'nt deny each other.  They went into marriage , lived it ,and came out on the other side of it running  straight back into each other's arms like sanctuary , where it felt safe, comforting and free and at peace. and still..in love. Was he Gay? whatever, it was real. I know, it's alot to digest, alotta questions...but ...well?

I think that Ennis was bisexual because I dont think he would have discovered his love for men if he hadnt met Jack, and I think that Jack was gay becasue he really showed more attention and love to Ennis that he ever did to Lureen... But oviously, Ennis and Jack both loved each other  much more than they loved their their wifes...  :s)

Gay? Well as been mentioned before, kinda’ - depends on whut you mean by “gay”. Wasn’t really such a thing in rural Wyoming (or Texas) in ’63. But, Homosexual? Yup. More in the movie than the SS even. Comin’ on to clowns, Mexican street hustlers, that’s pretty clear evidence in my book. FNIT wasn’t no accidental “woops, sorry didn’t mean to put my hand there” event. Grab hand, (BTW just how’d Jack know where Ennis’s hand wus anyway?), anyway, grab hand, stick hand in crotch, strip off coat, grab face, open pants, on and on. Pretty determined and focused on a purpose to me anyway. Never saw him chase a female with such determination, woulda’ never met Lureen if she hadn’t put the moves on his sexy self sittin’ at that bar.

After four years of hetero sex I think he not only had it with the Newsomes, he’d figured out what he really wanted, needed. Couldn’t fool ‘emself anymore, needed Ennis. The postcard is just another version of the “grab hand” from FNIT. Make a move, see if you get a response, then plan your next move. And here’s the good part, just like FNIT, Ennis, goin’ full throttle, trumps Jack and takes over in the reunion too, goes a lot faster than Jack expected, huh? Damn Jack, you struck gold! Twice!

Makes me wonder, IF Jack coulda’ figured a way to get Ennis to come on over, get into the idea of a Cow n’ Calf operation, how would Ennis have done that given his full throttle approach to the sex? Sorry off your topic.

When Randall makes his "innocent" suggestion, Jack knows right away whut's up - gaydar. Yeah, given the time and place I don’t see how Jack coulda’ been much more “gay” without riskin’ life and limb. And as “butch” as he played it (wife, kid, n' all) he still ended up dead, just whut Ennis was so scared of.

BTW AF it is amazin' to me that no one thought to ask this before. Good work!

The only way I could possibly experience this movie is that their love was one of a kind - unique and inimitable, love reglardless of their gender. In my mind they are/were no gays or straight. They just loved each other more than anyone else.

Ennis even never gave a look to another man, he was married, but always had Jack in his mind and soul. He kept his "little darling" locked in his heart showing no tendency to other men nor a women.

Jack as all his life in desperate need of love was replacing Ennis's love with some pale surrogacy, whether a male prostitute or Randall. The night before FC he said the words that can always make me sob: The truth is... sometimes I miss you so much, I can hardly stand it., showing how everything and everyone outside the time spent with Ennis is meaningless...

Therefore, all we really need to know is how deep, passionate, beautiful, neverending love Ennis and Jack had. Regardless of who they were, and what gender.  $)

Thank you Bluemountain and Jackster.

Ok Jackster...homosexual then. thanx for clearing that up.  I'd be interested in the explaination  of the difference , but i will venture a  guess and say that the term "gay" was adoptd by a group of activists  in the gay  community later on as a matter of  self pride? Am I correct?. .That said,

Perhaps it's why Jack  held back with Ennis, saying "me neither" in the pasture following FNIT, but adding "it's nobody's business but ours", a need to appease Ennis's defensive attitudes concerning the acts that had taken place the night before. He knew it would take baby steps  gently getting Ennis to accept who he (Jack) was. They never really spoke about the physical acts but in the confrontation scene, Jack's "I'm not you "statement may have had a much deeper meaning than what was once beleived. Jack acknowledging to Ennis about his whole self, If he could get Ennis to see that, then maybe he could get Ennis to realize that being in love with a homosexual does not not mean he was in love with the boogey man. Ennis already loved Jack. but he was afraid of the "queer" lable. . Jack just needed to convince Ennis that it was ok to love without fear. Not an easy task.MO.

Thanx Chameau, I have no problem merging the thread, and I was not aware of this one.

And thanx Loreen, I agree 100% with you, their love was one of a kind, but i find  it is the way they handled being  in love that  had a lot to do with how they defined themselves sexualy, as two men, in love in 1963. .  for that reason alone, i find the subject  much worthy of exploration.

I feel it made a difference in the difficult position they were in because Ennis may have found himself incapable of getting a full grasp on who Jack really was. In his mind, Ennis  simply fell in love Jack, just Jack, not straight Jack or gay Jack whatever.., just who Jack was as a person. That was how he defined  and rationalized his love for Jack,  Ennis could live with that much.  it maybe true, but a person has many layers to them and being in love with some one like Ennis can unravel them very quickly.  Ennis  had his own secret  motive for seeing it that way, but how did Jack define himself? the answer lies within Jack's actions, his dreams, his desires and his goals.
Ennis  seems to feel.. If Jack is "queer", and he loved Jack, then that made him "queer" too?, Maybe. but that 's  complicated food for thought, and also open for speculation.

Ennis's remarkable "boys like you" is telling. a good indicator of how far he'd come. Insight into  how , in Ennis's mind   he felt  about "queers" .  Even 20 yrs later he perceives a difference in his own sexuality than that of Jack's. The love they felt for each other is equal in it's intensity and need certainly , that part is undisputable...as long as Jack holds back a part of himself . as long as Jack hides away the fact that he is homosexual, the unspoken secret between them for fear on Jack's part that Ennis may get skittish and  bolt. I'm not sure  Jack always found this fear justified on his part, It was fear born  of Ennis fear, not his own, and that was'nt fair, for Ennis sake, Jack  kept his  own real feelings  about in inside.

Jack may have felt that their relationship had reached a certain point and has been indefintly put on hold until he could acheive the next step, the hardest step, and that was getting  Ennis to admit to himself that he was in love with a homosexual man, and that he himself may be too and to let that just be ok. . They were not Earl and Rich. Jack was alive and well, ready to face down society as long as he had Ennis by his side, once that hurdle is overcome, forJack, that means they can start to build a sweet life together.....but How does Jack do that?
I think over the yrs, it lead to anger and resentment because Jack always found himself having to compensate for the fact that Ennis was in denial. They were as  deeply in love as two people could be, but if one  as open and honest as Jack feels he has to hide such an important part of themself even from the one he loves, "quitting" becomes a big part of the equasion. MO.

One can also argue that as Ennis was bisexual, so perhaps was Jack.  I know a handful of bisexual men, and each one of them, while capable of having sex with either gender, have a preference -- especially as to long-term relationships.  And with a few of them, the preference changed over time -- so not so sure if the preference is set for life.

Sexuaslity is a complicated thing.  I persoanlly would consider Jack (and Ennis) as gay, but there is more than enough room for doubt...

As in many other times,I agree with you,Thomas. I would consider Jack as gay, giving his experiences and his main need for male gender, both sexually, emotionally and sentimentally. But sexuality, and other human emotions and functions,is too complexas to being labelled in an only sense.
Ennis’s eyes gone bright with shock, mouth opening then closing again. “Love?” Ennis said finally, voice strangling in his throat.

Jack smiled sad. “Yeah, Ennis. Love.” Leaned forward and kissed Ennis’s temple, whispered, “What’d you think it was, all this time?”

Exactly. Thanx you tpe for putting the words in my mouth. Your so consistantly good at that! Lables are not the whole of any one , but they are at times necessesary to define concepts. Having said that:

Blue mountain is right, Love is Love and the love Jack and Ennis felt is equal in it's intensity, but there are reasons why Ennis called it " this thing" . an analogy of love.,  it's because  he could not define it as love because of the way Ennis defined himself. Call it labeling, self identifing, but I feel Ennis felt himself hetero guy who found himself wanting and needeing one person in his life, Jack, another man in every sense of the word. How did it happen? Don't think Ennis could give a straight answer to it, Jack was the right person , at the right time, in the right place and that's it.

Both of them talked *around *the word "love" , talked in coded messages for" I love you" Jack with " I miss you so much I can hardly stand it", Ennis saying " As long as we can ride it, aint no reins on this one", both giving a personal insight into themselves and to each other that love existed. That they felt it.

Jack, the more open and honest of the two about his sexuality  spoke about "needin somethin I hardly ever get." Imo that 's touch, closeness, and honest feeling  with Ennis preferably, but sought it out in other men at moments when he felt very vulnerable.  With others, it was just about sex, but I feel Jack knew a little somethin  about it...before he met Ennis.  I also feel he  read Ennis's issues about sexuality so well because he was so much better  at  recognizing and understanding the concept of two men in love, regardless of Earl and Rich's fate. the reality of love between them  to Jack ,was a real possibility.
Wanting a tall drink of water is one thing , needing a tall drink of water is a whole nother level of thirst. "Need" connotates something you can't live without.  IMO. Thanx.

I'm listening to Willie Nelson singing 'You Were Always On My Mind'.....Jack was gay...and Ennis, that dry, silent, stony, gruff tree of a man was felled in one wallop and became his worst fear...but what a ride.

What a ride, indeed.

I also think that Jack was gay.  The difference with Ennis, IMO, is that he had gotten beyond the question of identity and was on his search for happiness -- and the belief that such happiness was for the taking.
