The scene with the 2 hippies that was deleted
« on: Jul 07, 2006, 04:47 PM »
You guys know which scene I'm talking about? The one where Jack and Ennis are in the car and they help out these 2 guys? Its in the trailer. according to Heath Ledger almost all of the crew hated the scene so they cut it out. I've been really interested in it. Why do u think everyone hated it? Maybe the guys made an insult to Jack and Ennis? I don't know, but i've been dying to see it.

you're probably referring to the scene with the two guys who were the ones that killed Jack, right?
yeah, the scene was cut out because it would have indicated that it had indeed been murder...and as we all know, Ang Lee wanted the viewers to find their own interpretation of Jack's death....

No thats not it. The one where they wanted to show Jack's and Ennis' heroic side, so they help some hippies with thier car. And everyone involved hated the scene. Its not in the short story or screenplay, or final cut. But it does appear in the trailer.

how did I manage to miss that scene then?
I viewed the trailer dozens of times....and I really don't recall seeing a scene with 2 hippies...weird. guess I'll have to check out the trailer again ( first thing tomorrow, 'cause it's pretty late over here right about now ) and then I'll get back to you on this one....

Dunno why they cut it...I can only imagine it had to do with why add something like that when it has nothing to do with the story...

The period (the late 60s) is about right.  I suspect the reason was the same one that prompted them to remove almost all references to contemporary events -- as is also the case in the short story.  Only references to the Vietnam war were allowed because Proulx herself had referred to it via Jack.

That deleted scene was apparently written by James Schamus, but Heath said that he knew it would be cut from the final take, as it just didn't seem to add anything to the storyline.

I don't remember seeing this scene in the trailer, either.  I'm greedy, but I wanted every scene with Jack and Ennis in it on that big screen, hippies or no hippies.  Maybe the hippie scene didn't add anything to the story, but I definitely think that more scenes of Jack and Ennis' meetings over the years should've been included in the final cut.

One can only hope that these tidbits will be in the deleted scenes in the deluxe version of the DVD....   :s)

Mmm, Jake looks seriously hot in that pic, surely that's a good enough reason to include it? :d) ::) ;)
There was some open space between what he knew and what he tried to believe, but nothing could be done about it, and if you can't fix it you've got to stand it.

I don't know if anyone is privvy to a script (April 2004 one) but if you read it,the whole scene is ridiculous. It just doesn't fit?It doesn't add to the story,it's totally unnecessary to it.I for one am glad they cut the scene but it would be interesting to see it as a deleted extra if another version of the dvd ever appears?

I read somewhere that the hipppies were supposed to have driven/crashed their van into the river ( presumably in a spliff-fuelled haze) and Jack and Ennis were shown helping to get them out. The rationale at the time was apparently to make them appear heroic/male/whatever - real men pull hippies out of rivers? I suppose it might have made an intersting contrast with Ennis's resctions to the bikers - yeah, I know bikers and hippies are two different things.

Why this scene would have been so disastrous, I think, if that it would have introduced extraneous charcters for no real reason and would have shown the outside world intruding on that of Brokeback, and undermined the efect of Aguirre's arrival/intrusion.

A part of the scene is shown in the trailer. It's when we see Jack and Ennis in a truck together. And there are 2 guys that we've never seen before in the trailer. Presumably the hippies. And yeah, you're right that they crashed there car in a river or something.

I thought the two guys we hadn't seen before that they show in the trailer are the two mechanics from the scene they cut where Jack is hugging Randall (puke, puke), not the hippies.

Same horses as when?  This would have been before Jack grew the 'stache, but after the re-union trip... i wouln't expect them to be riding the same horses over the course of 20 years...

If you mean the scene in the trailer where Ennis has his eyes closed that is when they were being trucked up to Brokeback Mountain,so it's the morning after Aguirre has dismissed them from his office.

I have read somewhere Ang Lee explain it was part of the scene where we see Ennis and Alma in the grocery: Ennis is in a hurry to go away with Jack and, in the trailer, we see him ashamed. At last Ang Lee went back to the screenplay, the scene in the grocery now show how the couple Ennis/Alma is begining to untie well before the meeting with Jack. In the trailer we also see a scene where Jack is upon a woden bridge, very muscular! It is not Jake but the dubble, this scene was shot during the week Jake was away because of Jarhead: don't look for the deleted scenes, they are all in the trailer! 8)

He's not even married to Alma at that stage. They are both being taken up to the mountain.Jack is not driving, they are both passengers. This is the trailer scene that browneyes is referring to.

browneyes, they are referring to a deleted scene.  It is a scene that deals with Jack being murdered by the mechanics.

I'm going to regret saying this, but there must be literally hours of footage that wasn't incuded in the finished movie - I assume Ang and/or the movie editor assembled the finished version and may have used shots taken for one purpose for a differnt one if they fitted. The trailer is a biy of a problem since a lot of what's in it isn;t in the movie as shown in the theter or on the DVD - let's hope it's a trailer for a new version ( though without hippies).
