I found this interesting post on IMDB.com . . . .

"I apologise in advance if this has already been posted but I just had to comment on it.

Has anyone noticed that Jack can barely do anything but Ennis always manages it.

Examples:
1. Aguirre chucks keys to Ennis in the trailer and he catches them - Jack's father-in-law chucks the car/truck keys to Jack but he can't catch them (they fall on the floor).
2. Ennis (at the beginning when he's in front of Aguirre's trailer) neatly flicks the ash of his cigarette and puts it in his pocket - Jack's ash, on the other hand, drops all over him during the dinner with Randall and his wife.
3. Jack tries to shoot a cayote but fails (we see this) - Ennis later reports he shot a 'cayote this morning' when he stays with the sheep.
4. Jack keeps on missing when trying to shoot the elk for dinner (we don't see this but Ennis mentions it) - Ennis finds his target perfectly.
5. Ennis cooks with minimum fuss - Jack has trouble opening the can of beans.
6. Jack seems too struggle with his 'mare' and in rodeo - we never see Ennis have any trouble with his (apart from when the horse is frightened by the bear but that's understandable) and I bet he's better at rodeo too.
7. Jack's truck breaks down when they're parting after the summer but who fixes it? Jack? Nope, Ennis does. I'm sure Jack tried but failed (or maybe I'm just being cruel. Lol.)

I'm sure there are many more examples but those are it for now. I'm sure it's just another device to show how different they are but I could be totally wrong.

What do you guys think? "

I can think of one great example where Jack took the lead: keeping in touch with his beloved Ennis.

Jack took the initiative to find and contact Ennis after the 4 years separation.  He drove 14 hours each way several times a year just to be with his beloved.  And for so long, he never stopped hoping for that sweet life with the person who mattered the most in his life.

The IMDB list pales into insignificance.

Sorry.  A bit OOT, perhaps.  :)

Jack's physically clumsy but emotionally together whereas Ennis is the opposite. It's funny that he cites his clumsiness as a reason not to take the power company job, since he always comes across as competent at everything he does as long as there are no emotions involved.

Eniss' self deprecating behavior and low self esteem/self confidence probably prevent him from venturing out and trying new things...Pretty much opposite of Jack huh?

Or maybe he just wanted to give Alma the brush off because he had yummier things on his mind and did not have time for chit-chat!
LOL oh, yes I agree with you here, gimmejack.  he had things to do, and Jack to see. lol

I see Ennis as really competent, too, ww (and I find that part of his magnetic sexiness); and I always wondered about that comment of his about being clumsy.  Obviously, as everyone has said here, it was just to brush Alma off about getting a "regular" job.

I liked the list posted above, about how well Ennis did things and what a klutz Jack was, bless his heart.  But needless to say, Ennis was lacking in emotional and social skills.  A classic example of two who, together are one perfectness.

Jake said in one interview, didn't he, that they were the ying and the yang, and he was right.

Jake said in one interview, didn't he, that they were the ying and the yang, and he was right.

Well, they do say opposites attract.
He will be eternally missed, but he will never be forgotten

He was, as an actor and a professional and a human being, one of a kind

Charles Roven, accepting Heath's BAFTA.

This award tonight would have humbly validated Heath's quiet determination to be truly accepted by you all here — his peers within an industry he so loved.

Kim Ledger, accepting Heath's Oscar.
