Jackster: Extremely cool! So you just Photoshopped the lettering on? Do tell. This isn't a real plate holder? Or is it? You know what, one can easily get a plain holder and print the lettering out on your printer on black stick-on sturdy fabric (hard to find). I want to do that!

You can find numerous "custom" frame makers on the web, they're about $20 bucks.
Took 'em two tries, first one came back "It's A Sweet Life"

Okay, excellent. Off I go to get one made. Not sure what I'll choose for it to say. Interesting, too, that I hadn't thought of the plate holder -- I knew I wouldn't get a custom plate itself, but this I can do. Fun!

Interest in the trucks leads easily to their license plates. Don't know if you're at all familiar with WY plates as seen in the film, but they tell a story too. First (left) number is the county, then comes the buckin' bronc (1st appeared in 1936), then the plate number. So by checking out the plate numbers and color combo you can tell what location (county) and year it is. Ah Ha! Keys to this can be found on the web or I'll send the links. A bit of slo-mo stop-action review gives new insight to what the set designers and continuity folks were up to location and timeline wise.

There's also a place that'll make up full scale "fantasy" WY plates for you, unfortunately they only go up to 1955 and you can only get four characters in the right side field so "ENNIS" (my choice) is out (but I guess ALMA would work). If the boys were 19 in 1963 then they might have been born in 1944, maybe when Ennis got older and he bought an old black GMC pickup to fix up he'd have gotten a vanity plate like this:

I want one! We have several American plates, the ones with state mottoes on, but even if we could put UK registrations on them they'd be illegal. No custom plates in the UK - you can buy regular plates - from the Government, natch - with interesting combinations of numbers/letters, but they all have to conform to the legal requirements and the year number is always a part of the set so you're stuck with 06 ( or 66 depending on which half of the year your car is registered in) or whatever. Some people keep old numbers ("cherished numbers", in official parlance) say with their initials and a number - someone I know has C1 and his three initials. These you buy from private dealers - the price can be up to £15.000 for rare ones and the first-ever plate, A1, would be millions, I should think. You can put them on your car, but when you sell it the original official plates have to go back on.

No custom holders either - our plates are stuck on the car - ? screwed on? I've never looked.

I'd like to imagine Jack driving around with this liscense plate on a new truck . A gift from Ennis after they find that sweet life together. I can dream can't I ? Maybe Jack could have his rodeo buckle made into a hood ornament! Cool. Good to see your from my old stomping grounds. The Buckeye State. In Pa. you can customize your plates up to 6 letters or buy one from the DMV that expresses your interests such as wildlife preservation etc.Thank you for all this wonderful information Jackster! Just got a new printer but hav'ent had time to set it up yet. I'll try to post a picture of my ride if I can figure out what I'm doing. I'm new to all this new technology. Heh heh.

I didn't even think about the fact that they have so many pickup trucks in this movie. Then again, where I live more than half the cars you see out on the road are pickup trucks. I drive a pickup truck, it's just convienient and my Dad always told me that they are less likely to break down then a car, something about how the engine is set up, I don't remember.

Besides, didn't you guys know that they bigger your truck, the more of a man you are? lol

Certainly they've gotten bigger and more powerful these days. and yes their is definitly a myth out there that says the bigger the truck, the bigger the man. I don't buy it.Believe or not I saw a truck the other day with a pair of testicles hanging off the bumper!!!! LOL I guess some men will do anything to prove their manhood. *grins*.

Wow, I must admit I've never seen a pair of testicles hanging from a bumper. lol

My truck is not huge, it just gets me where I need to get and hauls what I need to bring with me. It's an older truck, though, 1983, so maybe guys didn't need to prove they had balls through the size of their trucks as much back then.

There's a hilarious video on YouTube of a couple of teenagers "castrating" one of these pickups with a pair of boltcutters. Then they wait nearby for the owner to come back and find the results lying on the ground. Real high school humor but funny nonetheless.

In the UK the usual thing used to be that the bigger your car-engine and the sportier the car ( Porsches generally won) the smaller another part of your anatomy, of which most men have only one, was supposed to be. Now there seems to be a macho thing going on about the size of 4 by 4 you drive, except that most seem to have at, or rather more or less under, the wheel some blonde female who's about 5 feet tall. Very few people here drive pickups of any sort, though I've seen an odd American one here and there. Ironically they seem to be driven exclusively in towns.

Funny, WW. Yep, basically the same thing here. Trucks are really for working men (and women) here. Most prevelant are the SUV's -- including the gigantous Hummers. Ridiculous -- and they are as often as not driven by "soccer moms." It's just Big Greed and marketing -- they stopped making station wagons and mini-vans, so SUV's are what families with kids think they need. But that's a whole other topic.

This certainly has more than a grain of truth to it. Though some may think it a sterotype, I do think the association of trucks with manliness is a manifestation of the well-known "Curse pf Masculinity" syndrome.

Whatever the reality, it is the appearance being projected that is, I think, telling. True, the reality may be sometimes that of compensation, but they would still think that a bigger truck would compensate. There is a link made between inanimate objects (trucks in this case) and genitalia. IN some cases, the asssociations are quite primitive.

Jack "red lined" it to see Ennis from Childress Texas to Riverton Wy. in his 1963 red & white F-100. I feel that back in those days the vehicles were better biult with a lot less maintenance needed (especially after long road trips like this) .
I can'timagine redlining it for those distances in one of these huge monstrosites on the road today without something going very wrong. Besides, Jack did;nt need huge fake balls, or trucks so huge that you need a step ladder to ascend into the damn thing to prove his manhood , He was all man without it.Some one has a blue and white truck just like Ennis's around the corner from me. How many of these new enormous "mantoys" will still be around 20-30 years from now? They may be all recalled with all these problems! Back then Ennis or Jack could have turned a few wrenchs and had the problem fixed. Not anymore.IMHO.

Are today's trucks as complicated inside as car engines? Not that I'd recognize the bits under the hood ( this is someone who once told a guy in a gas station that she thought the engine looked funny and he said in a rather bemused tone that that was because it was the air-conditioner) but apparently modern cars are so complicated and all the parts sealed or inaccessible that you can't just fix the carburetor or the plugs or whatever. I assume that if trucks are used out on back-roads or off the black-top that they need to be tough and ? maintainable without the services of a garage.

Hate to disappoint you, but yeah, trucks (at least pickup trucks) are every bit as complicated these days as regular cars. A few years ago I needed to purchase a pickup for my small business, I wanted a "simple" vehicle with few items to breakdown. In order to get a simple Ford pickup with crank-up windows, no air conditioning, and a rubber floor mat I had to special order it from the factory! Of course the flip side of this is the fact that they are MUCH more reliable and require very little maintenance. Those trucks that Jack & Ennis drove were supposed to have the oil changed every 1,000 miles and be lubed every 3,000! That meant Jack shoulda' changed the oil TWICE in his trip to/from Riverton, ugh!

The term "redlined" just meant going at top speed, none of those trucks came with anything like a tachometer (which is where the redline actually appears). In Jack's red & white '63 Ford top speed (sustainable) would be in area of 80-85 mph. It might go faster, but believe me, you don't want to do it for long especially on the secondary roads he'd be driving in '67. Suspension and brake technology was primitive to say the least, Ennis's beatup '58 GMC (which he was drivin' at the time) still had a solid front axle, and the reason it was missing the front grill and bumber was probably because he'd rear-ended someone when he couldn't stop in time! They were truly "bullit-proof" in construction, but pretty limited in scope. Also, don't forget why Ennis had to drop out of high school as a sophomore and go to Worland with his brother. These vehicles are great to romanticize about and even cool to drive, but if I had to drive 1,200 miles to see someone I loved in a hurry, I'd leave the old truck at home.

Right on, Ennis too. Funny enough, all the goofy "super-trucks" we see today are really trying emulate the masculinity of Ennis & Jack and their pickups which (like themselves) were so brutally simple and plain. To paraphrase the SS passage: "no drawers, no socks, Jack noticed" - or in vehicular terms, "no radio, no heater, Jack noticed"

Damn, I was right! A couple of days ago I was behind a truck or SUV, don't remember which, but hanging from the trailor jack was what looked like a large pair of testicles.

Some of the biggest 4 by 4s here are driven by brain-dead birds who couldn't park them on an empty football pitch - the things are called Chelsea Tractors because that's where they're seen - in wealthy areas not noticeably threatened by stampeding buffalo or necessitating off-road driving. they often contain some blonde size 4 female and a two-year-old. Are trucks as common in large US cities as they are here? In fact farmers and so on shere eem to go with Land-Rovers more than trucks.
