Picture on First Postcard
« on: Feb 01, 2007, 03:06 PM »
I hadn't watched the movie in awhile and was watching it just now and realized that I've been to the place that's pictured on Jack's postcard to Ennis after they hadn't seen each other in four years. It's a picture of El Capitan in the Guadalupe Mountains. I'm painting it from a photo I took, so it's real fresh in my mind right now, which is probably why I just noticed.

It's funny how you notice new little things everytime you watch it.  :s)

Yes, I remember reading somewhere (here in the forum or elsewhere) that it was a pic of El Capitan in the Guadalupe Mountains.  Is there anything significant about this choice, I wonder?  The choice of a mountain is, of course, understandable.  A coded message, no?

This makes me even more curious to know what where the pictures in the other postcards.  Is there somewhere that gives detailed pix of all of them?

Where are the Gualdalupe Mountains?

Didn't someone say that the postcard Ennis pins up in his trailer is one that was made up for the movie - would that be from stills they took of the locations?

And the cards Ennis sent were plain white ones.

The Guadalupe Mountains are in New Mexico and Texas.

I don't know that it has any symbolic meaning, but it is a very common postcard in Texas, because El Capitan has such a distinctive shape to it and the mountain right behind it is the highest peak in Texas. I should try and find out what the other postcards had on them, see if there might actually be some symbolism to it.

Thanks bram.  So it is a well-known landmark in Texas, and it is understandable that Jack would have sent Ennis such a postcard.  It just had to be a mountain, no?

Do check on the other postcards.  I am quite curipus.  They are probably Texas ones (the ones that Jack sent out to Ennis -- I remember the one that Alma looked at, with the message "Fish should be jumpin...")
