What does full screen mean? Is it a special version different from the usual one?
I personally don't like it and I'm disappointed, I can't believe Focus Features is kissing the academy members butts by adding their name in big letters in the DVD cover (It seems like that name is more important than the film, how ridiculous is that?!). They ignored the film and refused to grade it even though they knew that BBM was the winner. If they wanted to do that why couldn't they add all these important awards like the Golden Globes, Critics' Choice. Baftas etc... in small text. Did you see how small the picture of BBM is?! Of course, this will not stop me from getting my DVDs but I don't like what Focus Features did at all!

The zoom would probably chop off the picture on all four sides.
The fullscreen DVD will probably be a pan&scan version, where the sides are just chopped off to make it a 4:3 shape, so you only see the a cut-out portion of the movie. It avoids your DVD player having to letterbox it when watching it on a 4:3 TV.
Actually, the zoom just cuts of a bit on the left/right hand side...

While I agree the box cover is rather blah, I'm not exactly going to be focusing on watching the cover. Heck, they can cover it in a brown paper bag for all I care, as long as the DVD is inside and it gets here soon.

I know what you mean. The second time I saw it, the old couple sitting next to me was very upset, because they thought the movie was just about two cowboys being friends. They seemed confused if anything at the first tent scene, and walked out during the second one. I kinda felt bad for them. They didn't see it coming and everyone in the theater laughed when they walked out.
Here's the Canadian cover. Its a little better imo than the U.S. version but still has put too much focus on the academy awards. Hopefully they put out a collectors edition without it.

Yes, there was a chunk of the movie removed for some reason between the time Aguirre left the trailhead and the time the boys were saying goobye. The goodbye scene was too abrupt. The boys went from a fight, to coming down off the mountain not talking to back to being friendly and saying goodbye. Something happened in between that we were not shown.

ethan, make sure to also get a "converting" DVD player - i.e. converts PAL to NTSC unless you have a monitor/TV that takes both PAL & NTSC signals. My projector takes both, so it preserves the better quality of PAL signals ;D

This is what my cover looks like! My copy does NOT have the silver around it or say anything about the academy on the front - it's a full picture of the poster with "Four-Star Focus Features Collection" banner across the top and a little "Widescreen" down in the right-hand corner. I talk about it in the thread "DVD Widescreen Edition - Is mine the same as everyone elses?" It doesn't say anything about awards on the front or on the back. If anyone is interested in this cover, I'm not sure if there were a lot made or not, but I know that I got mine at Zia Records in Tucson, Arizona. www.ziarecords.com If anyone wants to search for it! It's a great cover! But cover aside, the movie kicks ASS!!! And both of our boys have their pics on the side ;)
There are different covers in the USA, I guess; mine has the same front as the Lost_Girl's but a different back, with 4 little one inch square photos, 2 of the boys with their wives and one each of Ennis and Jack. I guess it's a film about two friends and their families!
The UK cover is better. And at least it boasts its BAFTA best film win.

On March 21, chameau said "Anything showing pics of our boys will make it for me." I agree. Plus, I honestly don't even see the border and the text - my eyes go straight to the boys and that's all I see.
Riobbm23, stephen, bram and some felt it looked too platonic I guess. For me, it's actually a little reminiscent of the embrace in the flashback scene so it feels romantic to me when I look at it.

I agree with you about the cover; my problem was with the mini photos on the back which gave the impression of a film about two cowpokes and their families! Not of a love affair between the two men; definitely a media strategy to not offend anyone......

The German Blu-ray has some real BD-Live content, 'eine Götterdämmerung' #).
A digital press release booklet: general information with 'polished' pictures. The booklet is presented as png-images with mediocre quality.

This is the very first time that BD-Live has some 'added-value' content, IMHO; usually it's just some useless trailers etc.

On the "reversed" image, I'm sure you noticed, they did a bit more than a simple reversal, Jack got moved back a little from Ennis. Enough so that there is now daylight between them, no men touching down under? This is, again, really fascinating to me for several reasons - 1st you have to ask why? The reversal could be easy to explain in art terms of direction of focus and composition stuff, but why "stretch" it out like this? 2nd, in order to do this as well as they have it seems they must of had access to the original individual images of Jack and Ennis which have been layered into the one image we're all familiar with. Otherwise getting the details, i.e. Jack's shirt, ear, etc. would be pretty difficult.
Love your phrase "glamor filtered" - they certainly did. Poor Alma's beginning to look really down an' out, while they gave Cassie a smile that looks like it came off the "Joker".
In thinking about the image reversal I started looking at this Ennis, and suddenly realized where he came from. This has probably been noted elsewhere in years past, but it just became apparent to me. The "famous" Ennis, the one used with Jack in all the movie posters is almost certainly from the shoot where he is by himself out at the ranch. I've composed the several other views taken that same day for comparison.
Same hat, coat w/turned up collar, hair, lighting. I've always been very partial to this series of Ennis views, IMHO Heath was looking particularly fetching in this outfit. I guess someone else was too, huh.
There are also views of him inside his pickup taken that same day.

Thanks for this pix rdx. I think the picture is of some deleted scene, Ennis is made up to resemble a teenager, as in other deleted pictures from the beginning of the film . In the scene before Jack's post card doesn't look too childish.

Yes, Ennis/Heath does look, at least a little bit, teenagerish in the picture, as does in the last picture of jackster composition. But I take it as Heath's incredible ability and talent to adapt, even to look different. When I was watching the film for the first couple of times, I thought that is it really the same man in this scene and in that scene. Of course it is a matter of makeup but I did keep wondering. I may be alone with this observation of mine... :i
