One thing that could not get off my mind is Ennis's pajama - the scene where Ennis finished his long day and entered the bedroom.
His pajama just caught my eyes. It has the red texture (not sure exactly what it was). This is the kind of pajama which I would not have imaged from Ennis.
What is your thought on this? Did you also notice such *mis-fit*?
-
I noticed his odd choice of pajamas too! The ones I remember seeing were yellow with brown *cookies* or something on them though... this is the scene with him and Alma right?

Yes. Right after Ennis came home and done with all the babies crying.

Re: Pajamas..you guys ever been poor, really poor? You do not get much of choice with fashion. Beyond the brilliant short story can you imagine the level of work done by production designers, costumers, and foley artists (sounds) to get this movie to the level it is? Wow.........
-
...my experience is that the poorer you are the less you have and pajamas would have been a luxury that they may not have been able to afford, on the other hand, they couldn't just have him walking around naked, could they?

Or maybe it's a case of tasteless Xmas present?

Being born in 1960, even poor you wore pajamas no matter how they looked. Interesting subject. Just look at Ennis/Alma vs Jack/Lureen clothes. Poor vs wealthy. Last encounter on BBM, worn hat, jacket, anything on Ennis. Top of the notch on Jack's. Not to mention the different settings. Ennis/Alma ranch and apartment, Ennis trailer at the very end, Jack's parent's house, hovels? Vs Jack/Lureen wealthy house (the best we saw was at the Thanksgiving dinner scene). This is apart of the unspoken language of BBM. Might we consider nominations for art direction and costume design? I saw something on the Net about this. ???
-
I think you are onto something. Sets and wardrobe were excellent. I must say that I would prefer Ennis squalid trailer to Lureen's tacky luxury, but it is perfect for her bleached head!!!!!

As far as the pajamas, did you catch the little tease of a butt crack there?
-
I would definitely take Ennis trailer (with Ennis, Rrrrr!). Just need a shower, a bed, a fridge and a stove, and a love in your hearth. Ennis was right about the furniture when Alma Jr. did some comments bout it. Did you noticed when he takes the bottle of wine from the fridge? Two diffrent glasses. In French we call them "verres à moutarde" (mustard glasses), the kind of glass we bought at those times at the grocery. Being sold full of mustard or Nutella. Froggy might know about the Nutella glasses. Here in Quebec we have cottages packed up with these souvenirs of our childhood. I rent that kind of cottage every Summer, the dishes there remind me of childhood, like camping. BBM did a more than decent job on those details. I recommend an Art Direction and costume design at the Oscars.

bnjmn3, I apologize if this topic offended you. Fashion is not really what I had in mind - I think all the characters in BBM dressed pretty well. I am not doubting the merits of the movie production from any aspect of it.
I was more curious to know the connection between Ennis and pajama - wonder if it had any significance. So far, it seems being poor is the only explanation.
-

LOL. or maybe a present from Jack.

Yes but i was afraid of pointing out. ;D

Who in the world could possible not have noticed? Personally, I licked my eyebrow a couple times.

The screenplay identifies the glasses as jelly glasses, and the cheap white wine from the fridge is a remnant of his time with his last girlfriend, Cassie Cartwright.
Also, I think I remember somewhere (in the screenplay?) saying that Ennis' clothes don't fit him: e.g., the sleeves of his shirt not quite covering his wrists. It was clear that Ennis had very little clothing, and he continued to use clothes even when he had clearly outgrown them.
Notice also that his jacket has smudges and looks worn at the elbows and right above his shirt breast pocket. I also read in a posted article of BBM clothing on this site that Alma's house dress was a piece of vintage clothing that struck a chord with the costume designers.

Ennis didn't wear underwear or sox early in the story (AP). These could have been his honeymoon pajamas... but in any case I'll bet they were a gift. Probably from Alma. She probably bought him the "Guinea Shirt" he's wearing in that scene, too.
-
...my experience is that the poorer you are the less you have and pajamas would have been a luxury that they may not have been able to afford, on the other hand, they couldn't just have him walking around naked, could they?
Oh, now that would have upset me to no end. So tasteless.
But you know, I am a pretty big guy. I would try to overlook it.
Can we shoot that scene again please. I just want to see how big I can get --- to accept nudity I mean. ;D :o
-
I'm surprised that with all the speculation about this scene, nobody mentioned the obvoius reason he'd be wearing pajamas... it was COLD in the house! Many people on a limited income turn their heat way down, especially at night, and it is more than likely they were living in some poorly insulated, crackerbox of a house anyway. I would have been surprised to see Ennis not wearing something to sleep in, especialy since the scene right before it appears to be set in either the fall or the spring, times when there wuold be plenty of wind and enough cold to go around.

Good point Jane!
As for the print on the pajamas not really being to Ennis' taste...that is true but it was probably either 1. a gift as someone has said, or 2. those particular pjs were on sale, so that's the ones they bought. Me, I really liked Ennis' undershirt in that scene. :-*
While we're on the subject of Ennis' clothes, what struck me the last time I saw BBM (#3), was his bolo tie in the Thanksgiving scene. I just could NOT imagine Ennis walking into a store and buying something as frivolous and "dressy" as a bolo tie. I think I'm gonna chalk that up to another Christmas gift from someone.
And I don't know why, but I LOVED the worn nature of older Ennis' clothes. The way his jeans were a little too baggy, and his Carhartt jacket was so faded. Made me wanna snuggle it, they were probably very soft from being so old and worn. *sigh*
-
Jane, Aela, very good points.
About the bolo tie, I could just figure it was a gift from Alma Jr. Or something he got from the time he was dating Cassie. About the worn nature of Ennis clothes, this made me aware about Ennis and Jack differences at the end. Ennis clothes talk about poverty. Jack's clothes talk about the rich guy. There are so many little details in that movie... Costume designers made a great job. Too bad for no Oscar nomination.
-
I think the girls had their Mommy invite Ennis for Thanksgiving...that's why he had the tie and the slick hair. Alma did not seem too interested in Ennis and his Rodeo story. But, she did seem to care about him on the kitchen until he said once burned...She waited a very long time to ask about Jack Twist.
-

I was waiting for this to come up. Just when I thought I had found good clean chat!
By the way, yes, I saw the crack. Coudln't keep my eyes off! tee hee
-
Well speaking of the clothes and how they changed and showed differences during the movie, I was also (as a big-time camper and backpacker) paying lots of attention to the TENTS! It was so interesting to see how they updated the shelters during the time that the movie passed. The first shelters, in 1963, were outside of my recollection (except for the pup tent), then there was a more advanced tent a few years later, then at the end there was a "state of the art" tent from the 1980's. As so many others have noted, the attention to detail in this picture is nothing short of amazing.

Brokeback. I immediately notice the odd choice of pajamas for Ennis. I thought he looked adorable in them! However, couldn't imagine him picking them out.
Perhaps Alma got them for him..
-
then again, those pajamas might have been from the second hand store... they were kinda poor at the time.
I love the great attention to detail here...
-
Pajamas were commonly worn in the 1960s. They were something you could buy at the five and dime and the selection was limited. PJs often had bold patterns -- especially kids PJs. As a kid my PJs were yellow with cowboys and horses on them.
Anyone that has slept naked on cheap bed linnens would know that pajamas are much more comfortable. Remember too that people still had a sense of decorum and modesty back then. Ya didn't go wandering around the house naked (or even in underwear) in front of your family. It simply wasn't done. **teehee**

Jane, just a quick OT note because you come from Connecticut. We can be proud that Annie Proulx was born in my home town of Norwich, Connecticut.
Thank you for a great story Annie. We sure are proud of you!

Whoa boy, did I notice, YOU BET! I was hoping for a little lower myself!
btw..I've told my bubba that I would be happy in a grass shack as long as it's with him.
-
I didn't notice anything wierd about his pajama's. I wear whatever bottoms are my size and are left in the clearance bin. In fact, I'm wearing Snoopy pants right now.

Lol The pajama is yellow with some cookies.. Outch !! lool :P

The pajamas threw me off. They seemed very out of ccharacter to me. As poor as he was, they are the newest pieces of clothing Ennis appears to own. I would have expected them to be faded or worn out or nonexistent. Maybe they were bought for his wedding? I don't think he got any Christmas presents. - Nancy
-
I must admit that the first time I saw the pajamas, they threw me off a bit as well. I found them a bit humorous, and was wondering if I was supposed to... The explanations in this thread make much sense to me - probably a present or something that was found on the discount rack...
-

LOL! ;D
I think it was something from the clearance bin. Did u notice that he only had the bottoms? I think it was a "leftover item"...the pyjama top was not included when Alma bought it at the store...

Well in the late sixties nobody went cold and nobody turned their thermostats down. Energy was not an issue and it was so cheap that houses were all kept warm. Conservation didn't occur 'til after 1973 with the Arab oil embargo. Even somebody broke had heat, food, and medical coverage.

Correct, Me and my brothers always wore pajammas 100% of the time. You could count on getting them for Christmas. When I was 13 (due to hero worship), I copied my older cousin Steve who slept in Jockey shorts. When my mom discovered this she hit the ceiling. I can still hear her tirade of what a dirty habit it was to sleep in shorts.

Hell, yes ;D
Oh, and I did notice the fact that the PJs were a little, um, low at the back when he sat down. Very nice of Ang Lee to leave that shot in ;D
'Course if you're interested in that kind of thing you should really go and watch the first appearance of young Mr Ledger in Monsters Ball instead.....
-
Hey, folks.
I mentioned something about this in another thread...
The pajama bottom is one more evidence of what a feminine/feminized world Ennis lives in. He had said he wanted a son, but he got two girls. Ennis being Ennis and Alma being Alma, all the characteristics of their apartment are rather feminine. And the apartment is above a laundromat, of all places--a place where women chat while doing laundry.
Of course before he was married, Ennis never wore pajamas, but someone gave them to him or Alma bought them for him after marriage. Silly print--something Ennis would never wear, but he does. All this makes him all the more hungry for Jack as a male friend, not just as a lover.
BTW, Scruffy, I had the same cowboy pajamas when I was a kid!! ;D
-
I loved those pajamas! Cute!!
-
WHAT? No speedos back then? Your better off nude Ennis ditch em!
-
I absolutely hated them - they looked like Alma's ( lack of) taste to me - her clothes are perfect grunge and Ennis's aren't much better. They are, however, perfectly in character; whether they're inperiod I'll leave to those better acquainted with what 1960s American males wore in bed!
-
Wonder if Jack had better taste in jammys? Maybe Ennis could have swiped a pair of his? Did they have black satin P.J.'s in the 60's? Must do some research.Hmmmmmmm.......
-
Jack in black satin - ohmigod!!!!
-
Fun thread. I opened it only because I assumed it must have to do with the butt crack which the PJ's showed off so nicely when Ennis sat down. :d)
I didn't find them odd at all. You would absolutely wear PJ's in a home with children during those times. I'm sure they were from Woolworth's or some such, and ugly patterns were common, too. If he'd had the top on, too, that would have been not very "attractive," but with the undershirt, I think he's the cat's pajama's. ;)
It's not a matter of cold, though, not in that scene, or he would have had the top on also, and probably socks, and Alma wouldn't have been in a skimpy little nightgown.
Speaking of Alma and ugly, we see her in those "dusters" over a nightie in the house.
Also, there's a picture on the set of Ennis in PJ bottoms and an undershirt, but they're not those ugly-print ones. I think not, anyway.

You're right Kathy - these aren't the same PJs as in the scene being discussed. I think these must be the ones he was wearing in the later "Ennis and Alma in bed" scene when she tells him that they should take precautions, although we never see those, obviously. The give away is the sideburns that he has in this shot...."young" Ennis didn't have sideburns but he did during that later scene.
Not that I've studied what Heath Ennis was wearing in bed closely or anything, you understand.... :-[ ;)
-
Well, cliothes ar signs and signifiers, so what's going on here is clearly semiotics. So watching/studying is absolutely essential.
These second pyjama bottoms are worse than the others, but you're right about the sideburns.

Hmmm...we need to study this even more closely. What is going on there in lower left corner with someone in blue jeans bending over, who it looks like "Ennis" is approaching for some unknown reason?

Maybe he's rehearsing for something or other? Though he'd been there, done that though possibly not bought the t-shirt.

Not sayin either one of our boys wore them ( thank goodness!) but these were a mainstay in the 60's . . All my brothers had them and my dad. uglyiest things I ever seen .Can't see these sexy studs wearin em. No no no!. Could see them in black satin though. Think I found out what Victoria's Secret is. Imagination running wild. The P.J.s in the second picture suck too. always IMHO.

Seriousy though even if these were avaiiable Ennis probably could not afford them anyway. But Jack could've . Nice thought though. I can dream can't I?

I don't know what the official name for them is Rosie but I call them emoticons, for emotion icons.
Unfortunately I don't use them enough. A dangerous thing when people can not see your face to judge your emotions. Especially for people like me who have a very dry sense of humor.

You bet, P1. I happen to think Ennis looks hot in both of his PJ's. Purtier than Alma in her nightie.
Not that I mind the pansy stuff at all, though.

One thing I didn't see mentioned in this thread, Ennis and Alma had two little girls, and Alma Jr. was walking. While Ennis might walk around naked or in undershorts around Alma Sr. I doubt he'd do it in front of the girls...and toddlers have a habit of just appearing when least expected
-
True; i also think the whole middle-class walking round naked thing wouldn't have permeated to rural areas anyway. And if you're as badly off as Ennis and Alma are meant to be, you just wear whatever you have, don't go dashing out for this season's trend.
-
This is true WW, We all know these cuties would look good in potato sacks, but in the rural 60's the culture was set to a certain standard that did'nt include the sexy hype that we see today. These jammys were the norm back then ...... In the meantime I'll keep having daydreams about night things and two cowboys.
-
I'm sure Ennis didn't choose those pajamas. Alma bought them for him, as all good wives used to buy their man's underwear, etc. She may have even bought them at the Goodwill. That's where we bought lots of clothes when I was growing up --- and we were not destitute. Poor people have poor ways, you know. I KNOW they didn't run aro0und the house naked in Wyoming!!!!!

I can't see Ennis buying those.

You are probably right. Ennis would probably dispense with the comfort of a pajama...
-
Yes, but when were movies ever realistic? I don't see him dressed in anything this "pretty-pretty" either. In fact I now have a firmly-imprinted image of alma coming home with these, Ennis opening the bag they're in and saying "Huh," in a disbelieving sort of way!

Oh boy, the pajama thread. I enjoy the butt crack shot, but I can't find that right now.
Also, this is what they made then, cheap, and this is what Alma (probably) would have bought. I remember my Dad's old-man boxers (not the hip boxers of today), and they were in all these crazy patterns. Maybe she couldn't find any classier ones and didn't think it mattered.

Well, the English equivalent at the time would have been stripy brushed cotton in deadly combinations of washed-out blue, grey, beige, greige, bleige, whatever - dull, dull, dull. Oh, and we don't have butt cracks, as far as I know. We have builder's bum instead....

I haven't slept in anything other than my skin since college. When Ennis came into the room with those jammies on I thought I was gonna puke! (^)

Shows you the difference between real life and real life as presented in a movie!

Easy to miss if you're not already looking at his butt, that is! Which I admittedly was. :8
Thanks for the welcome!

Ya know, nothing at school prepared me to be discussing this man's buttcrack! But, anyway like I said earlier the pajamas SUCKED big time..... Brokeback Forever.
-
...........but if there is one buttcrack I'd love to study It would be Ledger"s And I did look. Hee,hee.
-
*o) If modern education doesn't prepare people to discuss butt-cracks, then it must be in an even worse state than I thought!

You see welshwitch, I told you our schools were dumbing down our kids! I couldn't agree with you more. ;D

I'm with you, Kristin, I love Ennis's PJ's, so-called ugly print or not. I like that look -- nice, soft cotton elastic waist PJ bottoms, either with no shirt, or an undershirt like his. And my focus was totally where it was supposed to be from the first time I saw that shot.
LOL, WW and aintfoolin, re our sorely lacking education. Reading, writing and posterior anatomy.
And, Welcome to you, Kristin!

I second this! It's definitely not torture to be looking at it, by no means. #)

I like the look as well. I've seen far uglier PJs out there, but then again maybe I am looking at them through rose colored glasses because Ennis is in them? Heh.

Ennis would look good in a potatoe sack! Hooray for buttcrackmania!
-
One thing i was just thinking about though. I don't think Jack could have pulled off the whole pattern PJ look. Jack strikes me as more of a tee-shirt and boxers kind of sleeper. Ennis has that perfect amount of lankiness to pull off the dorky PJ look. Okay I may have just analyzed PJ vs. body types too much there... ^*()

As I stated earier in the thread I picture Jack in a pair of those black silk jobs. or nude He's got the body type.

Nude is good. I could deal with nude ;D
Definitely a silk PJ type of guy, I agree. I can definitely see him in something like that. But I am willing to bet he would have always slept nude if he shared a bed with Ennis. Too bad we never got any scenes from the week at Don Wroe's cabin.

Okay.. how about this.. you think Ennis would sleep naked if he always shared a bed with Jack? Or would he continue with the patterns? ^-^

How about this, this is the Pajama scene in a bedroom and I recall Jake wasn't there but Alma was ??? ::)

Absolutely. I guess my glasses could have been rose-colored also. :*(

I hope I didn't upset you, I wasn't trying to be a smart a** or anything. Just trying to stay on the topic of Ennis and pjs. Sorry. ^f^

It's allright, it was just a reminder to stay on topic ;)

Never too much analyzing. But myself, I think Jack would look good in this, too. I think he's as lanky as Ennis, isn't he? But I can definitely see him in boxers and t-shirt. Well, I can see Ennis in boxers and t-shirt, too. Anything, or nothing.

Oh sure, no smart a** there -- just trying to slip Jack into the Ennis PJ thread come hell or high water! :8

Okay, okay no more Jack PJ talk from me. :-X

just trying to slip Jack into the Ennis PJ thread
I don't think so... There are plenty of other threads to discuss about Jack and Ennis together, in bed (Motel Room) or tent... You could even start a new one if none of the existing ones suits your needs. ^-^
We are now going back to our scheduled programm.

Definitely agree with this. The PJs probably would not have been something Ennis would have gone and picked out for himself. They certainly didn't have the luxury of choosing from a wide array of clothing with their budget. Buy what you can afford and wear it as long as it fits. Sounds like the most plausible answer to the question of "why would he wear that sort of PJ?"
