Success in France
« on: Feb 01, 2006, 12:45 PM »
Released two weeks ago in france, BM was number two in france ( number one in paris)and still having success ( 150 screens 1st week, about 250 screens on 2nd week): about 500 000 people saw that film ( ps= the box office is not about money made by the film but about the number of viewers) it could reach the million entries.

There 's no big controversy here we're a bit less homophobic and the power of church is much less strong!

Thanks quentin751 for the update.  Please continue sending us information as to how BBM is doing in France.

I am sure that the gay content is less of an issue there...

1,000,000 entries sounds good, but what IS a good number, in Paris, and in France?  How does BBM compare to other major films, other gay films, etc.?

-btb
He pressed his face into the fabric and breathed in slowly through his mouth and nose, hoping for the faintest smoke and mountain sage and salty sweet stink of Jack but there was no real scent, only the memory of it, the imagined power of Brokeback Mountain of which nothing was left but what he held in his hands. Make the pledge! Go Back to Brokeback whenever, however you can. Join the BTB Project.

I've just been checking statistics at allocine.fr. Here's a table concerning what's in the cinema today (stats for France).

Title / audience / weeks in the theatres / how many theatres in France

1. Narnia (Lion Witch Wardrobe - GB) / 4.9 million / 7 weeks / 401 theatres
2. Les Bronzés 3 (French comedy) / 3.9 million / 1 week / 950
3. Kirikou et les bêtes sauvages (French animation) / 1.75 million / 9 weeks / 215
4. Je vous trouve très beau (French comedy) / 1.66 million / 4 weeks / 423
5. Lord of War (USA) / 1.17 million / 5 weeks / 289
6. BBM / 697 000 / 3 weeks / 255
7. Munich (USA) / 679 000 / 2 weeks / 451
8. The Constant Gardener (USA) / 571 000 / 6 weeks / 134
9. Hoodwinked (USA animation) / 413 000 / 2 weeks / 410
10. Un ticket pour l'espace (French sci-fi drama) / 397 000 / 3 weeks / 302

Info as of 7 Feb. Stephan

good question...anyone know? yes i know that cause i'm a french gay guy!!! So 1.000.000 is a very good success in france because there's only 300 screen in our country. Others films have often 500 or 600 screens... there's some towns who never have the pleasure to see that goddess film on theater... i saw it 4 times... and perhaps 5 next week!

I've just checked the statistics on allociné.fr
According to that website, Brokeback Mountain has sold over 849 000 tickets as of 14 Feb. in its fourth week.

Not bad, but I don't understand their counting method. The website puts BBM in 10th place, but as far as I can see, only 6 other films have more entries than BBM : Les Bronzés 3, Je vous trouve très beau, Munich, Narnia, Lord of War, Kirikou.  ::)

I've just checked again the statistics according to allociné.fr
BBM is still number 5 into its 5th week in theatres. Close to a million viewers. Ahead of it are 1) Les Bronzés, 2) Narnia, 3) Bambi 2, and 4) Je vous trouve très beau. Number six is Munich. It is showing in the same number of theatres around France, though moving around.

O what a beautiful day ! Looking at the local paper today, I saw that
1) my local cinema is only showing BBM in English with French subtitles, no more dubbed version;
2) BBM was showing in 4 cinemas a month ago, last week it was in 2 cinemas, this week 2 more are showing it - theatres in smaller towns where it wasn't showing previously - so we're back to 4 cinemas in Alsace. Yeah !

p.s. the other news is that in the smaller theatres, there's only one showing a day  :-\

Brillient Lilie,

So much for early predictions that this film would not do that well.

My friends have al been to see this on my recommendations (Orders man bloody orders).

They all loved it cos I told them I wouldn't love them anymore if they didn't....didn't we all........."Love me, love my movie"

But honestly isn't it fantastic that with you in France , here is the UK, in the Netherlands etc etc this is doing so well. Maybe Hollywood will sit up , notice, then make more of the type of movies we want to see.

Tom ;D

We can only hope. But I'm optimistic. ;D Obviously, there is a large audience for intelligent, subtle, non-blockbuster movies. With any chance we'll have more and more of them.

I recommended the movie to my friends, too, but I can't say it really worked...

Giving them the book helps.

And nagging them with emails too. ;-)

Or just "I'm treating you to a movie this weekend.  Let's go!  Popcorn included."

LOL. The book is quite a nice idea. They're not big readers, but it won't hurt to try. I just have to get my hands on the book, first.

And the movie theater I go to doesn't sell Popcorn, so I can't really include it in the treat. :P

We're so OT right now.

I thought I'd let you know that at the moment, on www.allocine.fr, BBM is best movie of 2006 according to the votes from the members of the site.
See here: http://www.allocine.fr/evenement/top-des-films/default_gen_annee=2006.html

And also from the votes given by critics.
See here: http://www.allocine.fr/evenement/top-des-films/topPresse_gen_annee=2006.html

It might change with more movies coming, but it's still nice to see. ;D
