;D  Well, I do love that glance he gave in the darkness.  His eyes shine in the night and have a soft glow when he spies Ennis's campfire down below.  A large part of that glance is in the eyes.  They speak a great deal when nothing is voiced out.

Of course,we have said several times before how they get to express their feelings by means of the body language. And that very often this speaks more clearly than any word they could pronounce;and a great part of this expression comes from the superb Jake/Jack's eyes and the way he "speaks" with them during all the story.
Ennis’s eyes gone bright with shock, mouth opening then closing again. “Love?” Ennis said finally, voice strangling in his throat.

Jack smiled sad. “Yeah, Ennis. Love.” Leaned forward and kissed Ennis’s temple, whispered, “What’d you think it was, all this time?”

Certainly  ;)

His smile is many things including the fiery one, but I did always think this comes from his eyes too. Even though they're blue like droplets of water falling from a clear blue sky.

I remember how peculiar his glance was just before "more word you spoke in the last two weeks" He smiled with his eyes and caught me (and maybe Ennis too  :P ) on fire. Was something hazardous how this spread to Ennis, cracking that heated, sexy grin from the side of his mouth, "..that's more word I spoke in a year" The rebound expression from Jack then seemed to carry something surreptitious to the face of contemplation, an index to a trigger. To me it was like Jack had toyed long enough with the chemistry, drunk as he might have been, and reached a point of no return as far as his character went. He was ready to blow and in some fashion did.  $)  :s)

In many (if not all) of these surreptitious glances Jack gave Ennis, one can almost say that they were not surreptitious al all.  That's because we can read so much in those eyes.  They tell all.  If Ennis simply looked up and looked straight into Jack's eyes when jack made those glances, he would have known everything.

Amen to this,Thomas¡.The quality of surreptitious comes much more from the way he looks at Ennis-almost hiding himself,no too directly sometimes- than for the things he said with these glances, that's for sure.

Perhaps Jack knew that had Ennis looked directly in his eyes, he would have been found out.

I don't think we have mentioned this scene yet: but do you remember the look Jack gave Ennis when the latter was riding away -- after agreeing to take jack's place with the sheep?  There was so much love in his eyes that had Ennis looked back, Jack would have been completely exposed!

Here ya' go thomas . . . .

When I look at this I do see some love, but I also see longing and regret. Like Jack's thinkin' "Damn, I blew that one, I was hopin' to convince him to that we should both be in this tent, and there he goes back to them damn sheep! Now I'm gonna have to wring it out without 'em"

Still, a good Surreptitious Glance no doubt about it.

 ;D

Maybe it's 'cause I'm still groggy after waking up this early afternoon, but that's funny.

Nice still shot.  :c)

In a nutshell I think basically this was a not so classic version of playing hard to get. Jack's face does kind of give that practical "So this is how you're going to play it, Mr. Mar arrr har har har. Look at you just mozy away on the horse, taunting me with the scrumptious pelvic thrusts.

... bastard.  :c) "

Certainly his plans for the night were disrupted a little  :*(

I agree!  I think I had also mentioned earlier that I thought it was Jack's intention to have Ennis stay with him in camp during the nights.  There is a wryness in Jack's smile -- as if to say: I have to think of another way to get him here with me.

OK I read through all 6 pages and maybe I'm imagining this one - I'm not even sure it qualifies as surreptitious since it looks like an out-and-out stare to me, but here goes.  The evening of the FNIT and Ennis says he's gonna go off to the sheep now - he's on all fours facing away from Jack - and, it looks to me like Jack is burning holes in Ennis' ass with his eyes.  Like, "OMFG - what I'd give to - " well, you can imagine the rest!  I know what I'd be imagining if I were in Jack's place.

HOT.... :d)

Well, it was really hard to read what Jack was thinking at that moment, because it was so dark.  ;)

Yes, it probably doesn't quality as "surreptitious", but I am sure that Jack had many things on his mind when he looked at the befuddled Ennis at that moment.

I also love the over-the-shoulder glances Jack gives Lureen in the bar.  Too bad the object of his attention isn't Ennis, but Jack's big blue eyes are KILLER in this scene, don't you think?  ^-^

Even they showed the interest for each other from the beginning (well they knew that they'd have to spend  summer together leaning only on each other), first look they exchange with an uncovered sympathy was the one when Jack said: "Now you said more words than in the past two weeks", And when Ennis looked back to him, that look was so warm and friendly, I think that the look showed their mutual empathy and tenderness! It was so lovely.  <^(

I think this scene was the first of Jack and Ennis I mentioned in the Cutest and Sexiest Scene topic.. :)
I simply loved Jack's smile ..He felt so happy that Ennis opened up to him and that Ennis felt so comfortable with him telling him about his life..That was amazing...After Jack smiles and Ennis is like"What", Ennis is literally blushing saying that but he controls it..Then Jack is like that is the most u spoke in 2 weeks and when Ennis says that is the most he spoke in a year., I love the way Jack looks at him..He has so much concern and genuine warmth for Ennis...He feels so much for Ennis...Ennis on the other hand feels like confiding with his new friend...It was a start of a beautiful friendship which eventually became one of the best love stories ever  <^(

Yes, those glances were beautiful, and certainly meant to be surreptitious -- although we wasn't particularly good at hiding them from Lureen.

There is a boyish playful quality to his brand of flirtation that I find most endearing...

Mmm.

To me it's almost as endearing as the one particular half-grin Ennis gave Jack with "That's the most I spoke in a year"

Partly hidden in Ennis's look is the admission that he trust and esteems Jack.  Though partly hidden, I think Jack understood and was happy.

Totally. I love Ennis' comeback grin  :c)

I saw In Jack's response to that admission an almost morose contemplation, as if this welcoming from Ennis slapped him in the face. Which might not be too far off as he had grown familiar with Ennis' otherwise thick exterior.

What to do with this happiness that comes with the admission though? How about a WOOOOOO-WHEEEEEE and some drunken jumping around and crashing?  :c)

Interesting, orangetruck.  For some reason, I saw a bit of quiet happiness and affirmation in that look, although what you say here can very well be true -- a morose contemplation.  Interesting how we each focus on slight nuances that may be different.

True. For me a quiet happiness is not terribly apart from morose. Spontaneous as Jack may be, I think even at that early stage he would have grown quite conscious of Ennis' buttons and may have felt an instinctual reflex to weigh the pros with the cons. As in to carefully step around a trap in the woods. I don't deny his subdued happiness at that moment, nor do I only see the positive. Certainly, given the conditions, Jack had known an anxiety or fear relative to this kind of gratification.

Although whimsical, I don't think it's entirely unheard of that he would have feared rejection even in that instance of admission; I wouldn't put it past Jack to get ahead of himself.

True, there is a thin veil that separates happiness from the realization that it is fleeting.

And YES: I felt that Jack was half-expecting a rebuke or rejection, and Ennis's response must have been such a wonderful affirmation.  It was almost like love expressed and love dutifully returned...

Agreed.

Only, all of this is emoted for me in that one glance Jack brings towards his lap after Ennis' side grin. There's a lot going on up in Jack's head. Ennis opening up at all must have him  (^)

I believe we've met common ground with this. I can see a great similarity between Jack's response to Ennis' admission here, and Ennis' recoil to the kiss Jack gives him in SNIT. Ennis is overwhelmed with a good feeling, but surely it is still dissolving his fear..
