'Brokeback' shirts for sale on EBay

If you can't get to "Brokeback Mountain" on your own, you can still come away with more than a lousy T-shirt as a souvenir. A local children's charity was given the shirts worn by actors Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal early in the Academy Award-nominated film and is auctioning them on EBay.

By midday Monday, bidding was already at $17,000 for the two garments, which have quickly achieved a weepy symbolic status among the film's many fans. The auction ends Feb. 20.

"We're overwhelmed by the bidding," said Maria Schmidt, executive director of Variety — The Children's Charity of Southern California. "This is already way over what any of us thought the shirts would bring."

The charity periodically auctions off Hollywood memorabilia. Until now, its biggest windfall came from putting the VW Beetle from "Herbie: Fully Loaded" on the block, which raised $24,000.

Initial bidding for the western wear, which appears again at the end of the film as a symbol of love and loss, has been strong.

"They are so iconic," said Dennis White, 48, of Seattle, who bid $17,000 for the garments. "They are like the ruby slippers."

The charity obtained the shirts from a board member with close connections to Focus Features, the film's distributor, Schmidt said.

Not everything on Variety's ebay website is so expensive: a pair of motocross pants worn by Vin Diesel while filming "XXX" were available for less than $60 at press time.

The local chapter is one of Variety's 49 international chapters in 13 countries dedicated to aiding children in need. The charity, which is not connected to the entertainment trade publication of the same name, has raised more than $1 billion since its founding in 1927. Locally, Variety has contributed to institutions including Childrens Hospital Los Angeles, Mattel Children's Hospital at UCLA and various boys and girls clubs.

A pair of jackets worn in the movie were auctioned this past Saturday in New York at a gala for Human Rights Campaign for $42,000.

The pair of shirts are also up for auction on ebay proceeds to benefit Children's Charity of Southern California.

Or I could shave one tiny skin cell off the US military budget, and buy the shirts and get the boys to model them, and build a wing at the Smithsonian. I also thought, when I first heard of this sale, that they should go to the Smithsonian. Our military budget wouldn't even notice the loss.

Here the the link to the auction that closed yesterday on eBay for the "Two Shirts". Someone paid $101,100.00 for them! It went to a good cause.

When news spread last week that the two shirts worn by Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal in "Brokeback Mountain" were being auctioned for charity on eBay, fans and the media paid attention. Early predictions estimated that the shirts would sell for $50,000, but when the auction closed Feb. 20, they went for more than double that.

Collector Tom Gregory, the life partner of David Bohnett of the David Bohnett Foundation won the auction, paying $101,100.51 for the iconic shirts. He spoke to PlanetOut minutes after the win.

Moments ago, you spent a little over $100,000 on the two shirts worn by Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal in "Brokeback Mountain." How do you feel right now?

I'm thrilled to have gotten them, but it's more than that. The shirts represent such a significant moment in the history of film. And when you see the shirts together in the closet in the film, it's an extraordinary moment for gay people.

In the last hour of the auction (between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. PST), the page views on the auction page itself jumped by more than 5,000, so all eyes were on the prize. At 4:50, with 10 minutes left, the highest bid was $70,000. Then you struck. Not only did you strike, but you outbid the guy by $30,000. What was going through your head in that last hour?

I was thinking of doing the three-minute snipe at 4:57, but what happened was that I just couldn't stand it any more! [Laughs]. All I could think about was that someone would come in higher and I would be mad! Isn't that a horrible thing to say? I wanted them badly. But in that last hour, I decided I had to have a ceiling for my bid.

So what happens now? How will you get the shirts and what will you actually do with them?

I think I'll probably just drive there myself and pick them up tomorrow. I know Variety [the charity] is excited and I don't want them to think I'm going to shortchange them. [Laughs.]

But in all seriousness, I want people to know that I am never going to separate the shirts. And I'm never going to let anyone put them on. Now, I don't know how they are at this moment, if they've been hung together like they were in the film since the film wrapped, but if they are on the original hanger, they will stay on the hanger, together.

You told me you were a collector. How do the shirts rate against the other things you've bought on auction?

I've acquired wonderful things over the years, but these shirts are iconic. I have so many other collectibles, but these shirts mean more than everything else I have.

This is such a significant movie for us. This is a landmark. And for this film to happen at a time that is so bad for the gay community politically makes it all the more poignant. In fact, midway through the auction, they posted something that said the winner has to sign something that promises you won't destroy the shirts. I think they were afraid some right-wing freak would get hold of the shirts and burn them in public or something.

Even in the face of the Bush administration, that this film can flourish means that we really are a group of people that refuses to be knocked down, and we want our story heard. And it's not just a story about same-sex love; it's a story about love and I think the film affected me because it validated so much. The story is about something . . . lost that could have been so wonderful.

So many people from all around the world were involved in this auction. Have you heard from any of them?

Yes. I got many emails, some of them so touching. And I want everyone involved to know that these shirts are in a safe place. This is all about emancipation, and for those people who are hanging shirts together in the closet.

We asked Tom Gregory to share with PlanetOut some of the emails he received from the other bidders in the auction. He sent us the one below, name withheld.

This guy can't loose and I am so happy for him. The value of the shirts will only go up and he sounds like the right sort of person to own them. As a dealer of antiques and collectibles for some years I knew immediately that this item, and it is 1 item, should go far. I expect it to end up in the Smithsonian some day. It's where it belongs.
