Actually, my "perfect" Ennis would have the same voice and mannerisms from the movie.  Dark hair, facial hair, and over 45 would seal the deal!  ;)

If Jack ages the way he did in the film....he is going to be like George Clooney....the older the better!!!!

A very sly fliiration on Ennis' part. Hoping to get a rise out of Jack and a little more feed back. Ennis didn't miss that careful looking over Jack gave him earlier at the trailer.

Not that he looks anything like George Clooney, my point was he is going to age beautifully....

Does anyone know where I can get old of this scene?  I love it so much, and am missing Ennis's cute attempts at flirting!   :P

Hi Patriot1

The scene I'm talking about is the one where Ennis and  Jack are around the campfire, talking and getting drunk, and Ennis says "May be you're a sinner....." - it's the scene just before the 1st tent scene.

Hope you - or anyone else - can help!

To me it is quite apparrent  that Ennis is saying he's a virgin. Is he flirting? I don't think so, that's just an opinion. Ennis has lived with his sister and brother in a pretty sexually sheltered life. According to Annie in the story he is aware of the dynamics of sex, "nothing he'd done before but no instruction manual needed." Jack I believe has had some kind of experience, and I think it was more than just  the, "I'll show you mine if you'll show me yours" kind. Ennis knows how to spank the monkey, pardon the expression, but that's about it til he meets Jack.
There was some open space between what he knew and what he tried to believe, but nothing could be done about it, and if you can't fix it you've got to stand it.

Ennis, riding against the wind back to the sheep in the treacherous, drunken darken light, thought he'd never had such a good time, felt he could paw the white out of the moon.

I think it is absolutely clear that Ennis is a virgin. Thta is what he is saying but if you look at the wink of his eyes and a subtle smile you understand that it might be a kind of subconcious flirtation.
Yea, well try this one and I'll say it  just once!

There is one this we can definitely get out of this scene. Ennis is a young man. Young men do not usually admit they are virgins; especially in 1963.  So, we can definitely see that Ennis is so comfortable with his new friend Jack that he can readily admit to Jack he is a virgin.  The scene shows us just how close the two boys have become.

Well i have read the thread and it makes perfect sense that Ennis was virgin when he met jack probably jack not and more after the four years i don't know but in the story it makes reference that jack had being mounting more than bulls maybe it was meaning that he was a lot experienced that ennis himself and that is why he took the leading role to induce ennis to be with him the first time.

You are right, he did take the lead, but what confuses me is why he did with Ennis's hand what he did.  What on earth made him think a straight, virgin homophobe would go for that on the first night. I could understand it better if it were the other way around.

Yeah, this really surprised me.  The only way I could make sense of it was that it was done subconsciously by Jack in his sleep.  I think Jack had been with men before and maybe this was a gesture he had used in the past?                           - Nancy

I LOVE ENNIS in this scene:  the way he's talking, holding his cup into his chest like he's embracing it (he wishes it was Jack), the cute little way he looks at Jack and asks, "What?" (as if to say what are you looking at me so intently for - it reminds me of someone fishing for a compliment or an expression of lve/feelings)  HE IS JUST SOOOOO ADORABLE!!!!

I thought when I first saw this that I was in love with Heath, but I realize it is Ennis that I love.  He is just like a lost puppy that you want to take home and SMOTHER with love.                                             - Nancy

Am I the only person here who did not think that Ennis was admitting that he was a virgin?  (Although I'm sure he was)  Maybe it's because I am thinking in 2006, but I don't think of sex as a sin.  Ennis always plays by the rules and I thought he was just saying that he had never really done anything wrong??????????

After reading all the posts about this quote, I can understand everyone's thinking but I am still not totally convinced that that is what Ennis meant.                                                  - Nancy

After reading your post I watched that segment of the movie several times, read the screenplay and story and I still come away thinking he was referring to having sex out of wedlock.  But, its just how I perceive it.  Could be wrong of course.

I still am of the opinion that whilst Ennis is saying to Jack he had generally done no wrong in his life, perhaps subconsciously he's telling Jack he's never "sinned" in a sexual way - least of all with a man - and when Jack offers him the drink it's symbolic of being offered temptation.  Ennis is glad of this opportunity and says "thank you".  No co-incidence that the immediate chain of events leading from that bottle of whiskey ends with the two men developing their intimacy considerably.  I honestly believe both boys are sensing a form of electricity between them by that stage.  Ennis is saying he doesn't know if he should act on his desire, Jack's saying "hey lets hasten things up a little". IMHO.
I wish I knew how to quit you
