ON THE eve of the biggest day of his life, Heath Ledger just wants the Academy Awards to be over.

After another loss at an awards ceremony, Ledger said yesterday he couldn't wait for today's Oscars to end.

"I'm looking forward to it -- and it being over so I can relax," he said.

Ledger lost a best actor award on the weekend to American Phillip Seymour Hoffman at the Independent Spirit Awards in Los Angeles.

It is the fourth time Hoffman has beat Ledger at a major awards ceremony in the past two months, including the Golden Globes, the BAFTAs and the Screen Actors Guild.

Today at the Academy Awards, Ledger is again expected to be left sitting as Hoffman gets up to accept the best actor Oscar.

But despite yesterday's loss, the Aussie star of Brokeback Mountain has received some Oscar support from ex-girlfriend Naomi Watts.

The star of King Kong, who dated Ledger for two years and took him to the Oscars in 2004, said she hoped Ledger came home with the Academy Award.

"I send him my best, best wishes," Watts said. "I think he's got a good shot, but who knows, it's anyone's guess."

Yesterday Brokeback Mountain director Ang Lee paid tribute to Ledger and said his heart went out to him after so many award snubs.

"I love Heath's work," Lee said, after collecting the best director and best picture award at the Spirit awards.

"I would like to see him win and break somebody else's heart."

Hoffman, the star of Capote, is the unbackable favourite for best actor after winning every award on offer this year.

Yesterday he said he wished he could share his many awards with other Oscar best actor nominees.

Australia's hopes rest with Ledger and three other nominees, Queenslander Dion Beebe for best cinematography, Sydney's Nikki Gooley for best make-up and Melbourne's Anthony Lucas for best short animated film.

Although boy, "poor guy" for getting "snubbed". I mean I remember everyone said how
Denzel was snubbed every year and yet the guy is INCREDIBLY privalged man.  Rich, famous,
admired.  So I can't feel sorry for these people.  Paul Newman took 7 tries I believe to a get
an Oscar.
