Los Angeles, California (AHN) - A movie about gay cowboys posted the highest per-screen average during the holiday weekend.

"Brokeback Mountain" earned $13,599 per theater compared to $9,305 for "King Kong" which made the most money in total over the weekend. It was followed by "The Chronicles of Narnia: the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" which earned $8,224, reports The Associated Press.

"Brokeback", directed by Ang Lee, follows the emotional agony of two cowboys who hide their relationship from their wives and family for 20-years.

Distributors are unsure whether the movie will continue to make money when it is rolled out to more theaters. It has already faced criticism from Christian conservatives.

"Brokeback Mountain" has achieved critical acclaim, landing seven Golden Globe nominations.
