Stuntmen

I don't know if there is a thread anywhere about this, but I was curious what anyone knew about the extent of use of stuntmen in the film? Don't burst my bubble. There were no stunt men right? Ha! Ha! - Nancy

The only one I am aware off was the one that replaced Jake Gyllenhaal for the scene were Ennis and Jack jump in the water from the cliff.

i'm sure were jack did rodeo he had a stuntmen,too , don't you think?
i mean it's more dangerous than jumping into the water..

I'm kind of curious how much of the horseback riding Heath did. Heath is in alot of films that involve horseback riding. I understand he did some riding as a kid. I wonder, if he does it all himself. I think they probably put a double in for the bear scene, but after learning that Heath did the Thanksgiving fight scene for real, I don'y know.

Heath does most of his horseback scenes I'm sure, he did say that he was v.confident on a horse, and Jake G. joked about having to go to Cowboy bootcamp, to learn all the ropes, whereas Heath knew most of it already from his childhood...then again, when you look at the casting, they both have 4 stunt doubles! So who knows?

I'm not sure that Heath did the scene where he fall from his horse after bear encounter and also when he go galloping before death sheep scene. While I think Jack didn't jump in the water and he didn't fall from taurus during rodeo; it is also clear that Laureen didn't gallop into the rodeo ground camp with his horse (it would be a big risk for his nice face!!) .
Another point maybe there was a stuntmen in some scene where we see Ennis and Jack riding together in BBM when they are filmed from far away.

I thought I read somewhere here that the wrestling scene Aguirre witnesses was done by doubles. Sure looked it me. Also the publicity still of Jack shirtless on the bridge. I'm sure it's here somewhere.

When Jack showed off on the bronco before he took off and gave that 'I hope that impressed you' look at Ennis, was not close up and it would be easy to get a look alike stunt double to do this rather than let Jake, who had not ridden horses before this movie, try this. After that short bronco, they did da close up of Jack.

Thanks Ethan for the link re: the jump scene. I"m even more impressed (if that's possible) with Heath now, because that looks pretty scary to me. Also, I can't wait to pause there on the DVD to see what is flopping in the breeze. Ha! Ha!

I can't believe Heath let himself get beat up like that in the fight scene! What a man!

I'm sure Lureen did not do that riding. That is vey difficult.

I think it's not Jake on the bridge - I read somewhere that he was away ( something to do with "Jarhead"?) at that point. It's certainly not him in the jumping-naked-into-the-lake shot, but it is Heath - full frontal pictures of him were taken and posted on the net - Michelle said later he was very upset by them.
Jake doesn't ride the bull but he is on a real one where he's preparing to go on. I've watched guys riding the mechanical version and been terrified - can't imagine anyone but a professional trying the real thing, and anyway wouldn't a film company have insurance problems if they tried to get a star to do something like that?

If you watch the "Making of..." and the "On being a cowboy" documentaries on the DVD, you'll get a fair bit of info about stunt doubles etc. Jake obviously didn't do any of the rodeo stuff (apart from close ups) and I think given that he'd never ridden a horse before, he wouldn't have done any of the "mare with low startle point" bits either. Pretty sure Heath did all his own riding - although possibly not the fall from the horse?

Why would the bit that Aguirre sees be done by stunt doubles? Wasn't exactly rough there - not like the fight just before they're leaving Brokeback.

I knew about the jump from the cliff though - pretty brave of Heath to have done that (and I swear I haven't slo-mo-ed that bit of the dvd

) and just disgusting that someone took photos and posted them on the net. I did actually stumble over them by accident but I closed the browser really quick because I don't think anyone should be exploited like that

It may seem rather excessive to have four "stunt doubles" for both Jack and Heath, and why one for Randy at all?

Keep in mind that many scenes are done for hours at a time, and not all the actors stay on the set during the entire shoot. If you've listened to the excellent interview with the actress playing Jack's mom, it tells how the "stand-in" would be there to stand where Ennis would stand while they shot close-ups of Mom's lines and reactions. Thus, you may see the back or arm or hat, etc, of a "stunt double," or, more precisely, "stand-in" many times during a film, not just when "stunts" are occurring. Maybe when they shot the wrestling scene, Randy had already gone, so they had someone just dress in his costume while they shot over his shoulder. Or maybe Randy needed a double to do some of the riding.

Notice that one of the guys doubles for both Jake and Heath. You just need someone approximately the right size and shape if you're shooting faraway shots, or over the shoulder, etc.

I heard that interview for the first time last night. It was really intersting, and she was full of praise for Heath because he turned up for her close-up shot, in full Ennis gear and everything, even though he'd already finished filming. She said that kind of thing is very rare, most actors wouldn't think of doing that once they had done their part of the shooting.

I had a discussion about the tire iron flashback scene that Ennis has, with Jennis and Aimi15, and after viewing blown up pics of that scene we came to the conclusion that it is a double and not Jake in the part where he he comes into the scene, and gets hit from behind. But the scene of Jack being attacked on the ground is Jake. That's a little confusing, don't you think?
