Alma Jr. wants to move in with her dad, why do you think that is?

My bet is she feels closer to Ennis than Alma, she also told since the birth of the new baby her mother and Monroe are hard on her. She is very fond of her dad and I guess she worries for him about being alone all the time.

When Ennis pulled up in front of Alma Jr.'s house to pick her up and she saw Cassie, did anyone see the look on her face? What did that suggest to you?

In the bar when she was sitting with and talking to Cassie, what she said and the look on her face. Didn't say anything?

When Ennis took her home was she really saying Alma was more strict on her or was she using that as an excuse?

When she told Ennis she could be a really big help for him if she could live with him, did anyone else hear anything else?

And as a side note, this is the second person that wanted to live with him and he said no. Not anything to do with the question of this thread. Just an "oh, by the way."

it is said that daughters love their fathers in a special way so it could be taht she wanted to be with her dad more. i believe that she knew it! i think that the "maybe he's not the marrying kind" comment imply taht there was something she knew and i bet taht in that Thanksgiving her mom would have said something against jack

Well that is interesting because every time I see that part of the movie I get the same feeling. There is nothing specific I can point to but it is all the looks and what is said. Also, where I come from and in the time I was raised, anyone who said, "maybe he isn't the marrying kind" meant he doesn't like women.

The question would be, how could she know or suspect.

Well, as you said Alma could have told her. Or she could just suspect because from the time she was a little girl her daddy was always sad except when he was going fishing and when he came back from fishing; he was "perky." Over 20 years a kid could pick up on that. And then, of course, she did see her daddy hug Jack with a mighty embrace.

Good thread here. I also feel that Alma Jr. knew or at least suspected about Ennis. She just seems to take such a keen interest in Ennis. Even if Alma Sr. never said anything about it, a sharp, perceptive child like Jr. could probably pick up on it. Some subtle clues (and one not-so-subtle one - the big hug) have already been mentioned in this thread.

I also take the "not the marrying kind" comment to imply that she suspects Ennis is different. How about her next comment, "You're good enough" to Cassie. I wonder if she thinks that Ennis is using Cassie as 'cover'. This is after Ennis asked Jack if he ever feels like 'everybody knows'. I think by this time Jr. might've sensed Ennis's state of mind.

I feel that Jr. made up the story about Monroe and Alma being hard on her (seems implausible, Monroe's such a nice guy). I get the feeling that she was just trying, however awkwardly, to help Ennis so that he wouldn't get into another relationship where he'd be miserable. She just wants him to be happy, bless her little heart.

Going little OT, but did anyone notice the earrings Jr. had on when she asks Ennis if she could move in w/him? I thought they looked like little birds or angels. Hmm.

That sure is the impression I keep getting. She wants to move in and take care of her daddy so no other woman will have to and he will be free to see Jack without the guilt of leaving a wife behind when he is with Jack.

And by the way...you have very sharp eyes! Those earrings are only on the screen for seconds. Yes, they are little blue birds. Look like maybe blue doves. What an eye!

I think that Alma, Jr. probably is feeling a little neglected at home. There's a new baby, who at least must get more attention from Monroe and who would get more attention from Alma just by virtue of the fact that she is a baby and needs more affection. Probably the only attention she gets is in the form of requests for help. Ennis's life is so less encumbered that she is a more integral part of it. He probably makes up in quality that which he can't give her in quantity in terms of time. I think it is pretty telling that he drops Alma, Jr. off last and asks her if she is alright at the end of the day with Cassie. That was very sweet. It appeared that he wanted to know how she felt about him dating. Many dads wouldn't ask.

Most little girls have a special love for their father and clearly Alma does. Monroe could just never measure up. I think it is endearing the way she has reversed role with her dad. She shows a maternal quality and wants to take care of him, not only here but also in the last scene when she suggests that he get more furniture.

I really don't know, if she knows about him. Sometimes we don't see what we don't want to see. I hope for his sake that she does know, so that he would have someone to talk to. I am certain her love is unconditional. She is just adorable.

I wonder what the deal is with Jenny? Why do we never see her?

Alma Jr. was a lot like her dad. Cassie said it herself when she said to Alma Jr. "You don't say much, but you get your point across." Which is exactly like Ennis. I think she was having problems with Alma and maybe Monroe. But i also think she was just a lot like her dad and knew that life would be a little more enjoyable with Ennis. I think the reason we don't see Jenny is simply for the fact that she didn't have as good as a relationship with her dad. Jenny probably had a better relationship with Alma.

The scenes I have in mind are

- when Ennis and Cassie pick up Alma Jr.

- when Alma Jr. and Cassie talk at the bar

- when Alma Jr. and Ennis talk in Ennis's truck.

These 3 scenes have an enigmatic quality that I find hard to categorize. There are a number of questions that are still in my head, and I would want to know the opinion of other forumers.

1. When Ennis and Cassie pick her up, Alma Jr.'s face mirrors disappointment. I tell myself: she is jealous of her time with dad. Do you get the same impression?

2. When when Alma Jr. and Cassie talk at the bar, it seems that Alma Jr. is distant but polite. And yet, the look on her face is hard to decipher when she watches Cassie and Ennis dance. Again, could it be a feeling that Cassie is 'competition', or is she apprehensive of another doomed relationship with her father? And is she saying more than what is on the surface when she says 'Maybe he's not the marrying kind.'?

3. Lastly, when Alma Jr. and Ennis talk in Ennis's truck, she proposes that she moves with him. Again, I thought: aha, so this is why she is anxious about Ennis's relationship with Cassie; it's because she had in mind all along to ask Ennis if she could stay with him. She sort of wants to recover the freedom she seems to have lost with her mom and Monroe, but with Cassie in the picture, she may have to deal with another step parent. Is this the same impression you get from this scene?

Patriot 1, You asked at the beginning of this thread why Alma, Jr. wantes to move in with Daddy. I hope I am not repeating too much here. I haven't read all the responses. Here are the reasons, as I see them:

1. Similar personalities.

2. She is #1 in daddy's eyes.

3. She is probably a low priority with mom, who has a new husband, a new baby and another younger daughter to take care of.

4. She is probably asked to help out alot around the house. Maybe she doesn't like taking care of a baby.

5. Maybe her realationship with Monroe is not that great. She measures him against Daddy and I'm sure he has more love for his
own child.

6. She is getting to an age where she wants different freedoms, maybe she feels they are too strict with her. Maybe she
thinks with daddy's work schedule she will have more freedom.

7. She loves her dad and worries about him.

I believe it is her grandaughter.
