Lack of Advertising
« on: Mar 31, 2006, 12:57 PM »
Is it just me, am I imagining it that I have not seen any publicity for the upcoming DVD release?  I recall several films recently where the pre-release advertising was seemingly relentless.  I watch a lot of TV and have not seen ANY ads for the DVD coming out next week.  I'll be interested to see if it is advertised in the Sunday paper flyers.

I think maybe it is done purposefully. Since the movie is still in the theaters, an aggressive marketing may not be a good idea.

There has been some media coverage about DVD release and most BBM fans know when it will be available. Just looking at the number of pre-order, I think it is doing fine.

When the DVD hits the shelf, the words will get out faster than you think.  :D

I saw one BBM DVD ad in the latest Advocate issue.

I had been thinking the same thing--it's coming out in 4 days!  what's going on??--but then yesterday I finally saw 2 TV ads for the DVD.  I hate to think it, but is the mainstream media unwilling/afraid somehow to promote this movie??  I noticed, too, that the ad very carefully said, "Nominated for 8 academy awards, including best picture"--without noting which awards it actually won (and couldn't it have said "won best picture--Golden Globes, Golden Lion, etc., etc."--granted, this was a US TV station).
some open space between

May be just where you are.  I watched a program the other night and saw the DVD ad 4 times in an hour.

Okay, I stand corrected.  Just got home from work, I'm watching TV and finally saw the first commercial for the DVD.  So okay, I'll stop whining now.

On another note, there was a blurb in the paper that the  Bahamas banned BBM.  Weird.

I saw the commercial twice yesterday and the other day when I was in Target I saw the picture of it by the DVD's by the coming soon or whatever they have- other than that I haven't seen anything. I also saw the article about it being banned in Bahamas.

I have seen ads on TBS, LOGO, and NBC. An article in the local paper, signs in Target and Wal-Mart (the ones in Wal-Mart were large cardboard signs over those machines at the entrances and exits to stop shoplifters). And this is in the deep south in the middle of the Bible belt.

hey folks, i've just noticed...the commercials were supposed to be released 2night...i've saw like 4 times already, ever since 7pm.  so, i think it's all strategically planned.  It felt so special so to see BBM scenes accompanied by The Wings on TV :-)

take care,

I've seen the TV ad twice but only on late at night.  I believe it was NBC
during Conan O'Brien.

The TV ad has been playing a good bit here this weekend (Louisiana).  WalMart doesn't have a poster up though.  TV ad is very disappointing, lasts only about 5 seconds.  Donna

I've seen the DVD ad about 4 times since 3/30.  The first time I saw it was on NBC of all places.  They never ran an ad for its theatrical release, but the finally wised up for the DVD release.

Today's Sunday paper flyers -- As I was anticipating, BBM is a footnote on the "new DVD releases" ads.  Looks like Narnia is the big draw this week, it appears prominently in all the ads.  Thankfully, Crash is also a footnote, at least we got that much.  I'm still very disappointed in the meager advertising the DVD release has gotten.  But oh well... I'm happy to be able to get the DVD at all, right!!  Can't wait 'til Tuesday.

I've seen a lot of TV advertizing in Canada.  Yesterday (two days before the release) I saw the ad no less than 8 times during the day.  It seems that the agressive ad campaign is directed to more artsy and cutting edge channels like Bravo, Much Music and Showcase.  I've seen ads on CTV and CBC but only after the family hour.

I'm seeing the commercial more and more. I just saw about a half hour ago on NBC a dvd spotlight of BBM. They had Heath and Jake saying a few things and showed some scenes from the movie. They said it was this week's dvd spotlight and that the dvd was out tomorrow.

I have seen four ads for the movie and just by watching them you would have no idea its about two men in love. Not a hint in the ad. It only shows a brief shot of Jack and Ennis hugging outside the apartment.

I was talking to my brother about that. I showed him the box and the advertising, and I asked him if he hadn't been told what the movie was about, would he have any idea that there was a gay theme? He didn't think he would. They have one sentence about the power of love on the back, but the way it's stated it could be talking about friendship.

Yes, bram, I mentioned on another thread that even with the book of Brokeback: story to screenplay, the photos in the middle of the book would never lead one to think the two men were having an affair; and on the back of my DVD the little photos acturally highlight the marriages, with single shots of Ennis and Jack on each end of the series! Is this the same on all DVD packages? I wonder how many ill informed people have gone to the theater or bought the DVD thinking they will see a drama about two cowboys and their families!

Funny you mention this.  Had dinner with my in-laws (age late 70s) the other night, they just returned from winter in Florida where, traditionally, they catch up on movies.  They saw eight this year, including BBM.  Now, I don't know what rock they've been living under, but apparently they didn't know the storyline.  And my FIL is a huge fan of westerns in general and Larry McMurtry books in particular, so I can only imagine what they were anticipating.  My jaw about hit the table when they were listing what movies they saw and they said BBM.  THEN they said "we walked out of it."  Hmm, not surprising.  Mom said "not only was it about, well, what they were doing up on that mountain (me: LOL!!) but we couldn't understand a darn thing they said!"

thanks for your story: I've heard similar renditions....and even I had trouble with the sound when I first saw the film: the sound system was not good enough to project Ennis' mumbling and many elders in the audiance lost half the script!  But as for walking out of the theater because of the content, well, that's certainly very telling!

Every time that I saw it at least one person walked out when they finally realized that it wasn't just about two cowboys and their families. They should have let people know what it was, instead of just assuming that they would hear from someone else.

It is, isn't it? At least when I worked there, the policy for DVDs was that if you opened it, all you could do was exchange for another copy of the same movie.

i'm sure we all know that this movie did phenomenal with or without advertising. i personally wouldn't want advertisements that would screw up the whole purpose of the movie. see my friend told me that the commercial for brokeback mountain was just basically all jack/lureen and ennis/alma with their kids. it was clearly giving no message whatsoever about what ennis and jack had to go through just to be together. i don't know about other bbm fans here, but i would rather have an advertisement that was true to the story instead of trying to hide it and promote it just because it won pretty awards..

..of course, that's just me heh
