I wish Ennis would have been there too, for a romantic night under the moon...

in some way he is - even if he isn't at the same place

somewhere I've read that in asian culture is the moon a symbol for 'connection' between two persons who cannot be at the same place "I look at the moon I know that my friend is doing that too"

"I look at the moon I know that my friend is doing that too"

This has universal resonance.

Thanks, PetterG.

I don't know... it seems to me that it's the opposites with the BBM period :

mountain - plain
young - old
hapiness - sadness
love - solitude
clouds - empty sky

like if the empty sky means that there is no more trouble love story to be lived, all has gone and only memories are left  :'(
I agree too your way to show opposites, it's so true and melancholic views. Great
As the moon lingers a moment over the bitterroots, before its descent into the invisible, my mind is filled with song. I find I am humming softly, not to the music, but something else, some place else, a place remembered; a field of grass where no one seemed to have been except a deer, and the memory is strengthened by the feeling of you, dancing in my awkward arms.............

Since seeing BBM, I've looked at clouds in a whole new way.  It's been off-and-on stormy here in Central Calif., and I look at the white and gray puffy clouds and see the clouds over Brokeback, and somehow they make me think symbolically of Jack and Ennis temporarily together,  of an unspeakable lonliness after Jack's death,  because they look like the clouds over Brokeback
Tell ya what...truth is...sometimes I miss you so much I can hardly stand it.

Jake G. had referred to this somewhere as the ying and the yang, like Ennis and Jack, the unity of opposites.

I always find this scene hypnotic

The moon is so bright that sometimes I wonder if the scene was shot bay daytime and then digitally darkened, and thus the sun became the moon...

Oh, there are quite a few pics which are found on various BbM websites and they are definitely taken in the daytime; but, those pics are exact copies of what appears to be at night in the movie. I just think that in the editing of the movie, many of the scenes filmed during daylight hours were darkened for the final cut of movie.

So, I am in agreement with you here.
(Ennis) is suffused with a sense of pleasure because Jack Twist was in his dream . . . lets a panel of the dream slide forward . . . it might stoke the day, rewarm that old, cold time on the mountain when they owned the world and nothing seemed wrong.

There is one thing that stroke me since the first viewing, it's the clouds.
When they're in Brokeback Mountain, there are always big black clouds upon them, with sometimes thunder.
As if it was a bad sign for their future relationship, knowing that they would never be able to be happy under a beautiful sunny sky.
I know that the clouds have been added with numeric effects, so it is obviously intentionally.
It hurts me each time I see BBM.

Did anyone notice it too?

Beautiful visual metaphors... I like the small details in the movie. Their relationship was maybe like the (stormy) weather, not possible to control it.

Can I borrow these for the pix and poem thread?

These are exquisite.

Yes of course. Actually the pix are not from me, I found them on the net...

I just love the first one. So dark, so heavy, but also so full of strengh, full of the life of the earth.

maybe OT:

when I see that view from their window (when Ennis is waiting for Jack after 4 years) I always think of a paiting by Edward Hopper - empty streets and houses

We forgot this one :

O moonlight deep and tender,
  A year and more agone,
Your mist of golden splendor
  Round my betrothal shone!

O elm-leaves dark and dewy,
  The very same ye seem,
The low wind trembles through ye,
  Ye murmur in my dream!

O river, dim with distance,
  Flow thus forever by,
A part of my existence
  Within your heart doth lie!

O stars, ye saw our meeting,
  Two beings and one soul,
Two hearts so madly beating
  To mingle and be whole!
