Wow, this is like finding the Holy Grail of BBM. Ennis says those words as he is taking in Jack's scent. It really tears me up...

Thank you all for sharing this information. It is so wonderful knowing Ennis actually said those words. I went and watched the scene again with volume on high and I heard it too, faintly yes but its there. So friggin beautiful. brought a lump to my throat :'( What a scene...

I am so glad you got to hear it! Isn't it wonderful? Those three words make me cry harder and more than the whole movie and that is a LOT. Also his shuddering breath when he finds his shirt inside Jack's crushes my heart. This discovery was a total shock to him. I am so grateful it was Heath Ledger that was chosen to do this movie. I don't think anyone else would have added as much to it as he has.

It's very very difficult and hard to hear it, but now, after many attempts,
seems to me that's there....... :o
If definitively confirmed, it would be another great interpretation from

Try as I might I can't hear him say "Jack" or anything like it. From the time he discovers HIS shirt inside Jack's I hear very clearly his trembling breath. Just after he picks up the sleeve as he is holding the shirts to his chest, he says, "I Love You" and then I hear nothing because I am crying like I don't think I have ever cried before.

Sorry, no "Jack" here.

I'm with you- hearing the I love you devestated me. That makes that scene even more painful. I watched it again and it could just be his breath but before he puts the shirts up to his chest- when he first takes the shirts out it sounded like he said "Jack". I could be wrong, but that's what it sounded like to me. Either way, the "I love you" just took this scene to a whole new level for me.

I only hear exhaling breath, and only his lips opening, without moving more, which seems like he's just opening his mouth a bit to exhale after sniffing the shirt so hard... you guys sure it's not just psychological? I mean a breath can easily be interpretted as anything said under the breath, and when you want to hear it bad enough, you mind just interprets it as "I love you"...
Anyway, what was so wonderfully tragic about this story (and possibly its strength) was the fact that neither Ennis nor Jack openly called their relationship as love. To have Ennis say "I love you" would take this away from the story... I really hope the Heath didn't do such a thing, as it would make the story less of a tragidy.

I'm with you on this one. The whole point of the film is that the time or the opportunity to say I love you was taken away from Ennis by the death of Jack. To say it at that point would diminish the tragedy and be an insult to Jack, to only to be able to say it once he was dead.

I would say, to each his/her own. I do hear it, although subtle. If you feel that Ennis saying those words would spoil the intent of the movie for you, then I would suggest not going out of the way (ie. playing multiple times or turning up the volume, etc.) to try to hear it in those scenes. Some of us do feel that it takes it to a different level, making it more special in a way...

LESS tragic!? No way. It makes it even more tragic for me. Ennis has finally realized he was in love with Jack and now it is too late.

<OT>Wish I had learned diplomacy. Raised by my grandmother who was a very blunt person. I love her for it. You may not always like what she said but you sure knew where she stood. But, I guess there is a way to do the same thing diplomatically.

I guess tragedy was the wrong choice of word... how about significant... "I love you" is a phrase with three simple words... an everyday person can say them without feeling it, but to feel it without saying those words take things to a completely different level. That's what I have (hopefully others as well) gotten from the short story, the screenplay, and the film. To me, it is the significance of such strong love - one which you can feel it without the other person saying it - that makes its loss in the end so heart wrenching that it takes your breath away.
Anyway, like dirtbiker says, to each their own...

I listened to it. I even played it on my computer and used audio software...and yep...he says "I love you!" And if you watch his lips he moves them at the time in which the words are said. They are almost inaudible. I had my ear phones on and listened several times to make sure I was hearing it.

No matter whether he said these words or not...we the audience can feel the depth of his love. It is most fitting in how he spoke these words so softly which was in character for Ennis. If he had spoken those three little words loudly...we would have not believed it. To speak them softly, is the same as a kiss to me.

I want to hear him saying these words, but on the other hand I don't need to. I KNOW Ennis loves Jack. His expression says that. When he holds the shirts close to him and closes his eyes and inhales Jack's smell, you can hear his heart crying out "I LOVE YOU". the pain on his face speaks for itself. Isn't that's what got us crying from the begining, even before hearing the words?

While I agree that them not saying "I Love You" made the story that much more powerful, hearing Ennis say it only enhances the story for me.
Here is a man that is not big on endearments, so for those words to make it out of his mouth was a miracle. We see him finding out that Jack is dead, then finding out that Jack was bringing another guy to the Twist ranch. How much more devastating can that be? He goes up to Jack's room and finds the shirts- he not only has a tangible reminder of Jack, he sees how enduring Jack's love was. Ennis is where he always belonged- inside of Jack- two in one. He is holding Jack in his arms again. Those shirts said I love You. Did the words need to be said? Absolutely not. Was that scene extremely devastating prior to any I love you? You bet. If Jack had said those words I don't think that would have been out of character for him. But Ennis? That moment probably flooded him with so many conflicting emotions and in some way was a comfort and possibly relief for him, holding the love of his life in his arms again. So I don't find it completely inconceivable that while "holding" Jack again and that an endearment could escape his lips.

Whether Ennis vocalizes it or not, there is no doubt in my mind that he does say 'I love you' in his heart at that moment when he breathes the imagined scent of Jack from the shirt.

I am not quibbling here. There are so many times when we catch ourselves saying the most important things in life (things typically taken for granted that would sound awkward when vocalized) deep within our hearts: the one place where it matters the most.

To answer this question is, in a sense, academic. How can he NOT say 'I love you' at that very moment? It does not matter to me if we hear him say it or not.

In this sense, all of the above comments are correct.

It doesn't matter to me either. It was known and felt troughout the whole movie. With those two shirts, Jack was once again the ministering angel to Ennis, reaching out even in death to the love of his life.
