I love just reading quotes from the movie! 

So someone please tell me if Ennis said "Huh?" during the "having to come down from Brokeback" scene. You know, where he kicks the ground...

first, "that snow barely stuck an hour, huh?"
and then later... "I don't need your money, huh? I ain't in the poorhouse... shit"

And good huh's.  I haven't thought about these ones in a while.  In fact, I don't know that I've properly heard the one in the post-divorce scene when Jack comes.  Oh boy -- must do research with the DVD.  Thanks.  Oh, but that scene is so poignant.  Jack is so happy, but Ennis is held back...and then the sad ending to it.  I want to smack Ennis for not having Jack in for at least a little while.

It's also true that Ennis doesn;t say "Huh?" when he's realy angry - eg with the bikers, at Thanksgiving and in the final part of the scene by the lake. When he knows what he wants to say and isn't trying to say as little as possible, it disappears.So maybe it's a conscious way of avoiding speech when he's in control and not deeply emotional?

As much as I adore Jack, and my heart breaks for him in that scene, I can't be too harsh on Ennis there. He didn't know Jack was going to turn up, and it must have made him really panic when he saw him turn up out of the blue,his two separate worlds coming together like that. Also, he only got to see his daughters once a month, I don't know how I would cope if I could only see my daughter once a month, and I wouldn't put any man, not even Jack/Jake before her.It might not have been as simple as just taking the girls back to Alma, maybe she and Monroe had gone away for the weekend, and Ennis had missed the previous month's visit, so he may have worried it would seem to the girls like he wasn't that interested in seeing them, or if Alma was being difficult, that she might use it as an excuse to limit him even more from seeing them.And what excuse could he give her, he could hardly say he couldn't have the girls cause he wanted to spent time with his "fishing buddy".Maybe I'm just seeing it from a parent's pov, but I think the fact his daughters were there goes a long way to explaining why he reacted that way to Jack.And there's no doubt Ennis feels bad about rejecting Jack, the way he says "I'm so sorry, you know I am", and his muted "Jack..." when Jack turns to leave... :\'(
Having said that,he should have asked Jack to get a motel room somewhere and come back when the girls were asleep, or the next day when they went back to Alma, and if that wasn't an option, then arrange to see him the following weekend, or something. At the very least, he should have invited him inside for a coffee (unless he thought Junior would remember he told Alma Jack was from Texas and didn't drink coffee ) and something to eat, after driving all that way

I suppose we're supposed to see the impetuous nature of Jack's character there; he's dropped everything when he hears about the divorce, and some without checking if it's a good time. then when Ennis makes it clear that it's not, he impetuously turns on his heel and goes away.

In reality he could obviously have gone up to see his parents, which is presumably what he told Lureen he was doing, then come back the next weekend, when Ennis wouldn;t have the girls.

But then there'd have been a whole different movie...

But he does say, "...knock the rest of your f**king teeth out, huh?" to the biker.  But otherwise, this as you describe it could well be the case.  Sometimes, though, I think it's just plain a common language tic, like I say "like" all the time, or "you know."  It's a lazy language habit we can tend to get into when younger...and sometimes not get out of later, unless we have to do proper public speaking or business speaking or some such.

I totally agree with you, CrimsonSky.  But what I meant was what you said in last paragraph above here -- just that he could at least have had him in like a normal person.  Go to the bathroom, have a cup of coffee and food, before turning aroud and driving all that way back.  The girls would probably have liked Jack, something a little fun and different, and maybe even flirted with him, as girls can tend to do -- he's so cute, even though "old."

  but the ide of Jack as old cracks me up. in the divorce scene he was about 31, and at the end pnly 38 or 39, the latter when he died. Sure, you change in the twenty years between the end of your teens and late thirties, but you don't necessarily turn into a grey-haired overweight middle-aged man at that point!

Not to feed the already rediculous off topica(new word) but I love the scene when Ennis/Jack meet after the divorce. Yeah, i feel sorry for Jack, but the acting, by both men, is great in that scene. I love it dearly, though it turns out wrong. Its actually one of my top 10 favorite scenes in the movie, i love the way Ennis half-smiles, in a flirty kind of way when looking at Jack. Its so beautiful i would never slap Ennis (unless, well lets not go there)

OOT: I do admit that in the after-the-divorce meeting, Ennis appears older than he should be.  The toll of the divorce, perhaps?

Back on topic, I do love the "huh" in this scene.  And his restrained surprise and initial pleasure of seeing Jack go very well with it.

In one of the fanfics I read one of Ennis's daughters , after meeting Jack and accepting her father's relationship actually says " Daddy, your man is  a"looker")  ...and he is. So much for teenage girls not not knowin good lookin "older " guy when they see them . I personally live with this,so I know.Matter of fact It was my own daughter who clued me in to who these guys were. Her exact words were":Them cowboys look good" SCARY. Anyway Ennis's use of the word Huh? to me is just him speaking as all of us do at times, although he usuasally says it when he gets frustrated and is trying to make a point about something IMO.Bottom line is they're both "lookers" and I'm hooked .

 P.S. I love Ennis and even I wanted to slap him in the post-divorce scene.

By the way,perhaps it´s a nonsense,but I don´t know if the "huh" and "allrights" are additional remark from the script or from the actors themselves;the same that the enormous amount of cigarettes that both characters/or actors are smoking during all the movie...Excuse me for the stupidity.

The man is constantly tucking  his shirt in! , and in the water walking Jesus scene, as he hands Jack back the whiskey bottle, instead of saying here's the bottle back, he just says hmm! I luv em he's so  what my southern parents would call * down home* or in this case, midwest charming.
