Ennis's Pajama - Spoiler
« on: Jan 07, 2006, 11:50 PM »
One thing that could not get off my mind is Ennis's pajama - the scene where Ennis finished his long day and entered the bedroom.

His pajama just caught my eyes. It has the red texture (not sure exactly what it was). This is the kind of pajama which I would not have imaged from Ennis.

What is your thought on this? Did you also notice such *mis-fit*?

I noticed his odd choice of pajamas too! The ones I remember seeing were yellow with brown *cookies* or something on them though... this is the scene with him and Alma right?
Give me your hand
And take what you will tonight, I'll give it as fast
And high as the flame will rise
Cinder and smoke
Some whispers around the trees
The juniper bends
As if you were listening

...my experience is that the poorer you are the less you have and pajamas would have been a luxury that they may not have been able to afford, on the other hand, they couldn't just have him walking around naked, could they?

Being born in 1960, even poor you wore pajamas no matter how they looked. Interesting subject. Just look at Ennis/Alma vs Jack/Lureen clothes.  Poor vs wealthy.  Last encounter on BBM, worn hat, jacket, anything on Ennis.  Top of the notch on Jack's.  Not to mention the different settings.  Ennis/Alma ranch and apartment, Ennis trailer at the very end, Jack's parent's house, hovels? Vs Jack/Lureen wealthy house (the best we saw was at the Thanksgiving dinner scene).  This is apart of the unspoken language of BBM.  Might we consider nominations for art direction and costume design?  I saw something on the Net about this.   ???

I think you are onto something.  Sets and wardrobe were excellent.  I must say that I would prefer Ennis squalid trailer to Lureen's tacky luxury, but it is perfect for her bleached head!!!!!

I would definitely take Ennis trailer (with Ennis, Rrrrr!).  Just need a shower, a bed, a fridge and a stove, and a love in your hearth.  Ennis was right about the furniture when Alma Jr. did some comments bout it.  Did you noticed when he takes the bottle of wine from the fridge?  Two diffrent glasses.  In French we call them "verres à moutarde" (mustard glasses), the kind of glass we bought at those times at the grocery.  Being sold full of mustard or Nutella.  Froggy might know about the Nutella glasses.  Here in Quebec we have cottages packed up with these souvenirs of our childhood.  I rent that kind of cottage every Summer, the dishes there remind me of childhood, like camping.  BBM did a more than decent job on those details.  I recommend an Art Direction and costume design at the Oscars.

bnjmn3, I apologize if this topic offended you. Fashion is not really what I had in mind - I think all the characters in BBM dressed pretty well. I am not doubting the merits of the movie production from any aspect of it.

I was more curious to know the connection between Ennis and pajama - wonder if it had any significance. So far, it seems being poor is the only explanation.

The screenplay identifies the glasses as jelly glasses, and the cheap white wine from the fridge is a remnant of his time with his last girlfriend, Cassie Cartwright.

Also, I think I remember somewhere (in the screenplay?) saying that Ennis' clothes don't fit him: e.g., the sleeves of his shirt not quite covering his wrists.  It was clear that Ennis had very little clothing, and he continued to use clothes even when he had clearly outgrown them.

Notice also that his jacket has smudges and looks worn at the elbows and right above his shirt breast pocket.  I also read in a posted article of BBM clothing on this site that Alma's house dress was a piece of vintage clothing that struck a chord with the costume designers.

Ennis didn't wear underwear or sox early in the story (AP).  These could have been his honeymoon pajamas... but in any case I'll bet they were a gift.  Probably from Alma.  She probably bought him the "Guinea Shirt" he's wearing in that scene, too.

Oh, now that would have upset me to no end.  So tasteless.

But you know, I am a pretty big guy.  I would try to overlook it.

Can we shoot that scene again please.  I just want to see how big I can get --- to accept nudity I mean.  ;D   :o

I'm surprised that with all the speculation about this scene, nobody mentioned the obvoius reason he'd be wearing pajamas... it was COLD in the house!  Many people on a limited income turn their heat way down, especially at night, and it is more than likely they were living in some poorly insulated, crackerbox of a house anyway.  I would have been surprised to see Ennis not wearing something to sleep in, especialy since the scene right before it appears to be set in either the fall or the spring, times when there wuold be plenty of wind and enough cold to go around.

Good point Jane!

As for the print on the pajamas not really being to Ennis' taste...that is true but it was probably either 1. a gift as someone has said, or 2.  those particular pjs were on sale, so that's the ones they bought.   Me, I really liked Ennis' undershirt in that scene.   :-*

While we're on the subject of Ennis' clothes, what struck me the last time I saw BBM (#3), was his bolo tie in the Thanksgiving scene.  I just could NOT imagine Ennis walking into a store and buying something as frivolous and "dressy" as a bolo tie.  I think I'm gonna chalk that up to another Christmas gift from someone.

And I don't know why, but I LOVED the worn nature of older Ennis' clothes.  The way his jeans were a little too baggy, and his Carhartt jacket was so faded.  Made me wanna snuggle it, they were probably very soft from being so old and worn.  *sigh*

Jane, Aela, very good points.

About the bolo tie, I could just figure it was a gift from Alma Jr.  Or something he got from the time he was dating Cassie.  About the worn nature of Ennis clothes, this made me aware about Ennis and Jack differences at the end.  Ennis clothes talk about poverty.  Jack's clothes talk about the rich guy.  There are so many little details in that movie... Costume designers made a great job.  Too bad for no Oscar nomination.

I think the girls had their Mommy invite Ennis for Thanksgiving...that's why he had the tie and the slick hair. Alma did not seem too interested in Ennis and his Rodeo story. But, she did seem to care about him on the kitchen until he said once burned...She waited a very long time to ask about Jack Twist.

Well speaking of the clothes and how they changed and showed differences during the movie, I was also (as a big-time camper and backpacker) paying lots of attention to the TENTS!  It was so interesting to see how they updated the shelters during the time that the movie passed.  The first shelters, in 1963, were outside of my recollection (except for the pup tent), then there was a more advanced tent a few years later, then at the end there was a "state of the art" tent from the 1980's.  As so many others have noted, the attention to detail in this picture is nothing short of amazing.

Brokeback.  I immediately notice the odd choice of pajamas for Ennis.  I thought he looked adorable in them!  However, couldn't imagine him picking them out.

Perhaps Alma got them for him..

Pajamas were commonly worn in the 1960s.  They were something you could buy at the five and dime and the selection was limited.  PJs often had bold patterns -- especially kids PJs.  As a kid my PJs were yellow with cowboys and horses on them.

Anyone that has slept naked on cheap bed linnens would know that pajamas are much more comfortable. Remember too that people still had a sense of decorum and modesty back then.  Ya didn't go wandering around the house naked (or even in underwear) in front of your family.  It simply wasn't done.  **teehee**

Jane, just a quick OT note because you come from Connecticut.  We can be proud that Annie Proulx was born in my home town of Norwich, Connecticut.

Thank you for a great story Annie. We sure are proud of you!
