Ennis sits up, putting his hat on, says with sadness: No, I...I told you...it ain't gonna be that way.

Ennis moves closer to Jack, but doesn't look him in the eye, continues: You know, you... you got your wife and baby in Texas, and...you know I got my life in Riverton.

Jack, looking downcast, replies: Is that so? You and Alma...that's a life?

-Ennis (a little angry with Jack's question):-Now you shut up about Alma. This ain't her fault.(Jack is surprised for Ennis reaction and shuts up immediately) The bottom line is, we're around each other, and this thing grabs hold of us again in the wrong place, in the wrong time and we're dead.I tell you there... there were these two old guys ranched up together, down home. Earl and Rich.

(Meanwhile,we see in a flashback the scene that Ennis is going to tell Jack;he,his father and his elder brother are walking along a country path).

Scene continues with the flashback view of little Ennis, his Dad, an' older brother C.E.

ENNIS: They wus a joke in town, even though they, they wus pretty tough old birds. . . . Anyway, they, they found Earl dead . . . in an irrigation ditch. Took a tire iron to 'em, spurred 'em up, drug 'em around by his dick 'till it pulled off.

JACK: watching Ennis intently: You seen this?

ENNIS: Yea, I's whut, nine years old? My dad, he, . . he made sure me an' my brother seen it. - Hell, for all I know he done the job. - Two guys living together - no way. Ya know we can get together once in a while way the out in the middle a' nowhere. . . . but . . .

Ennis is on the verge of tears.Jack realises it and caress gently his face.The river water flows impetuously from one to the other,like the strenght of their love...

Jack now understands a bit more about his lover, more than he knew for these past four years.

Scene fades to black, while the music carries us to a new scene, sometime later, outside the DelMar apartment in Riverton. The girls are playing on a swingset. Suddenly we hear shouting in the distance, Ennis and Alma are having an argument. They bring it outside to the stairs as Alma leaves, heads to her job.

ENNIS: It's nearly suppertime, where the hell ya' think your goin'?
ALMA: To work!
ENNIS: Yeah, well I thought you had the day off!
ALMA: Well you thought wrong.
ENNIS: The girls need to be fed.
ALMA: Well you take care of it!
ENNIS: Alma. ALMA!
ALMA: Supper's on the stove!
ENNIS: No one's eatin' unless you're servin' it!
ALMA: I promised to take the extra shift!
ENNIS: Well, fu*kin' tell 'em ya' made a mistake then! Goddamn it Alma! ALMA!!

Alma storms off to the grocery and her job, doesn't turn around to even acknowledge Ennis. Ennis is furious, but realizes he's lost, heads back to the apartment past his daughters who've stopped their swingin' and been watchin' it all.

ENNIS: You girls need a push or sumthin'?

GIRLS: (In unison) No o o o . . .

Ennis heads back inside to serve up supper, kickin' an ash bucket on his way. These stairs where the emotional reunion with Jack rekindled their relationship, now also seem to be the scene of the quenching of his relationship with Alma.

Next scene.Jack is at work.introducing a new product to his clients.

-Jack:-Listen to her purr, gentlemen ! You ain't gonna get that with your Caddy! I told you what she could do, and now let me show you.

Two men are inside the office looking at him:

-Man:-Say, didn't that pissant used to ride the bulls?

-Man 2 : -He used to try.

Lureen,who is sitting near them,raises her head by hearing this and looks at them with a sadden look,but she doesn't say a word in deffense of her husband...

New scene, yet remarkably, the "Wings" music, playing in the background, has carried us to now the fourth scene with this theme. Alma comes home from shopping with groceries in one arm, mail in the other. Sets down the groceries, looks through the mail. Finds a postcard to Ennis from Jack, postmarked Childress TX 1972:

Ennis:
See you in a
couple weeks fish
should be jumping

Jack

She seems to hear Ennis coming up the stairs and puts the mail down on the counter.
The Wings music continues, picks up volume.

Next scene.Jack is at home and looks insistenly for someone,all around the room,while Lureen is sitting making her deals.Jacks stops and asks her:

-Jack:-Honey! Have you seen my blue parka?

-Lureen :-Last time I seen it, you was in it...day we had that big ice storm.

-Jack : -Well, could have sworn I seen it in here.

-Lureen : -You know, you've being going up to Wyoming all these years. Why can't your buddy come here to Texas and fish?

Jack: Well, 'cause the Bighorn Mountains ain't in Texas. And I don't think his pickup could make it down here anyways.

Lureen continues adding up numbers on her adding machine: New model comin' in this week. Remember? You're the best combine saleman we've got....the only combine salesman in fact.

Jack: Yeah, well, I'll be back in a week. That is, unless I freeze to death. And I'll freeze if I don't find that parka

Lureen: See now it don't seem fair, you going up there two - three times a year . . .with him never comin' down here . . .

(Jack's already out the door with his mind on 'other' things . . . waves goodbye)

Next scene: At DelMar's home,Ennis is also preparing his things to go fishing.Meanwhile the girls are playing and Alma is sitting,reading a magazine with a serious look in her face.

-Alma : -Ennis, they got an opening over at the power company. Might be good pay.

-Ennis : -Well, as clumsy as I am, I'd probably get electrocuted.

-Junior(from next room) : -Daddy! The church picnic's next weekend. Will you be back from fishing by next weekend? Please, daddy? Please!

-Ennis:-Well, all right, as long as I don't have to sing. (The girls laugh,except Alma).

Ennis grabs his basket and his fishing rod and hurries out the door, preparing to leave.

Ennis has put his hat on and is grabbing his jacket when Alma, with irony in her voice, says: You forgettin' something?

Ennis looks back at Alma, returns to the kitchen and grabs his fishing tackle box from the table and hurries out.

Alma remains seated at the table, staring sadly into space.

Next scene: Jack is on the mountain,waiting for Ennis arrival.We see how his face lightning up when he sees his lover appearing in his old truck.They smile at each other when Ennis goes out from the vehicle.

-Jack:-You're late

-Ennis:-Look what I brought. This way.

He's carrying some beans to eat them the way they used in their happy times on Brokeback...

New scene. We see Ennis and jack riding in a forest, with deep moss covering the ground where the horses tread. We hear Jack talking -- inaudibly -- about a cayote, etc...

New Scene. Jack is back in Texas. He is "teaching" Bobby to drive a tractor, marked as VERSATILE.

Jack (to Bobby): There ya go! No Hands! It's all yours, buddy... It's all yours!

Next scene:DelMar's home.While the girls are playing,Alma is sewing and Ennis watching TV and drinking beers;both of them are very separated from each other and the general atmosphera is about boredom.

-Alma:-It's Saturday night, you know, we could still smarten up and head on over to the church social.

-Ennis:-That fire an brimstone crowd?

-Alma :-I think it'd be nice.

New scene: Ennis and Alma are in bed, kissing, and making love.

Ennis is about to enter Alma when she whispers: As far behind as we are on the bills, it makes me nervous not to take no precaution.

Ennis pulls back, looks Alma in the face, and stiffly replies: If you don't want no more of my kids, I'll be happy to leave you alone.

Alma retorts softly: I'd have 'em if you'd support them.

Ennis goes back to his side of the bed, turns his back to Alma, faces the wall.

Alma sadly reaches up and turns off the bedside lamp.

And just a note here...in the book she say under her breath something "the way you like to do it don't hardly produce kids anyway."

So, we see the picture where the "waters are widening" between them...She is suffering because he is suffering...and down the row it goes to Jack's suffering...

Next scene:we see a first take of Alma while she's listening to the judge in the court she and Ennis are to arrange the terms of their divorce.She shows a deep pain but also angerness.

-Judge : -Custody of the two minor children, Alma del Mar Jr. and Jennifer del Mar, is awarded to plaintiff.Defendant is ordered to pay child support to plaintiff in the sum of 125 dollars per month for each of the minor children until they reach the age of 18 years.Del Mar divorce granted, this sixth day of November, 1975.

While the judge is speaking,we see another first take of Ennis in this case; he looks deeply worried and has some little tears in his eyes.

Awww.... that gave me a sad.

New scene:

We see a beautiful day as a happy man drives his pick up truck into the great State of Wyoming! He smiles and hits the steering wheel with his palm as he happily sings along, "King of the Road." And he is the king of the road indeed! He beeps his horn and pulls into the long driveway to a dilapidated cabin.

There seems to be no door, the weathered clapboard fading into the next row of equally weathered string of dried out shingles. Many years had passed since the place had seen a fresh coat of paint. It seems like the main architectural focus of the building is a rusty bulkhead. On the right side of the building the actual doorway topped by a small set of antlers. Jack thinks to himself, I can’t believe Alma would let the girls visit this place if she knew what it looks like. I hope Ennis is alone!

Ennis cannot keep from smiling a little when he sees Jack, looking gorgeous in his adorable western leather jacket. "What are you doing here?" he asks.

"Got your postcard about you’re divorce comin’ through, so, here I am.”

Ennis turns away from Jack and back toward his own truck. His two girls smile at Jack who gives them an awkward wave.

Ennis breaks Jack's embrace and still smiling and in a somewhat daring move heads for his pickup and says:

ENNIS: Comhere. - Now this here's Jack. - Jack these are my little girls . . . this' Alma Jr. an' Jenny.

JACK: (looks in the cab smiling) Hi.

ENNIS: (teachin' his girls some manners) Say hi girls.

In unison the girls say hi. Jenny looks at Jack with real googoo eyes.

The boys move away from the truck, Ennis face darkens a bit with concern, Jack's still smiling:

JACK: (panting a bit with excitement) I got you're card . . . the divorce came thru . . .

ENNIS: Yeah.

JACK: So - here I am.

Jack : - I had to ask about 10 different people in Riverton where you had moved to.(feeling a little uneasy already before Ennis silence)I guess, I thought that this means you...

-Ennis:-No, Jack...I don't know what to say...See, I got the girls this weekend and...Jesus, I...I'm sure as hell sorry. You know I am. See, I only get them once a month, and I missed last month.

Jack is listening to him while he progressively looses the smile in his face...

ENNIS: So I just, . . . because a' the roundup . . so ahh . . (Ennis spies a pickup drive and by slow down) well . . .

JACK: Yeah, alright.

ENNIS: Jack? (Ennis looks right at Jack, who, bitterly disappointed, begins to turn and walk back to his truck.)

JACK: I'll see ya' next month then . . .

Ennis, never good at interpersonal relations, spits on the ground, hands in pockets staring at the ground as his lover drives, brokenhearted, away.

We see a crowd of very humble people;children sending food in the middle of the street,prostitutes of both sex,everywhere poverty and vice...With an incredible sadness in his face,Jack approaches to a couple of male prostitute;the tallest put his eyes on Jack.

Jack nodds and immediately looses himself with his circumstantial lover in the darkness of the alley...

New scene, Thanksgiving Day at the Twist house, scene opens in the kitchen with Jack basting a monster turkey on a platter. Jack picks up the platter heads to the dining room where the assembled Newsome family waits. Jack exclaims as he delivers the turkey . . .

JACK: Here we are!

Jack picks up the carving tools as old man L.D.Newsome jumps up:

L.D.: Whoa there Rodeo! The stud duck doin' the carvin' around here.

Jack: Ah you bet L.D., - I was just, eh, savin' you the trouble.

-Lureen :-Bobby! If you don't eat you dinner I'm gonna have to turn off that television.

-Bobby : -Why, mama? I'm gonna be eating this food for the next two weeks.

-Jack : -Hey, you heard your mama. You finish your meal, and then you can watch the game.
