Scenes with ONLY Ennis or ONLY Jack
« on: Jun 12, 2006, 04:05 PM »
There are very very few scenes in the movie where you don't see either Ennis or Jack  (such as the scene between Cassie and Alma Jr., although Ennis was not very far away).

Name the scene with Ennis (without Jack) that impressed you the most, or touched you somehow.

Name the scene with Jack (without Ennis) that your found most wonderful (whether happy or sad).

For me, The most wonderful Ennis scene is when he waits for Jack in anticipation of the reunion.  His impatience and anticipation is beautiful to behold.   The smile we see when he realizes that Jack has arrived --  a treasure.

For Jack, it is when he drives the truck to Mexico after being turned away by Ennis.  It is painful to an infinite power.

Jack dreaming up on the dark mountain, watching the fire that's both a sign of Ennis's camp and a symbol of Ennis's meaning to him.

Ennis on the phone to Lureen, confronting the death of Jack and the loss of love.

oh my tpe, what a difficult one!  I think the one Ennis scene that affected me the most was the one where he broke down in the alley, after leaving Brokeback.   I near enough broke my heart watching him breaking his own.....heartbreaking, and incredible acting.

I think I'll have to agree with you on the Jack one.....leaving Ennis after being rejected, to go to Mexico for solace.  Heartbreaking. I keep using this word, but it is so true.

Christie, you have a wonderful sense of balance in your selection of scenes.

I can't change my choices, but I wish yours were mine!

Not that the Ennis scene I selected was wanting!  :)

With Ennis: The scene where ennis leaves after the FNIT, taking his own "via dolorosa" and searching his feelings and thoughts.

With Jack: When hi is on the mountain, smoking, and looking down on the camp, where Ennis is.
The most difficult scene was the paragraph where, on the mountain, Ennis holds Jack and rocks back and forth, humming, the moment mixed with childhood loss and his refusal to admit he was holding a man.

- Annie Proulx -

From the vibration of the floorboard on which they both stood, Ennis could feel how hard Jack was shaking.

So full of dark foreboding...   The "death" music is also quite effective here in prefiguring what is to come.

I love this scene -- so early on into the movie.  The eyes and the smile.  Gentle.

Ennis waiting for Jack! does that count...Alma appears a little too..but Ennis is mainly on his own...if not,..then ennis going to the post office to post the "You bet" card

Ennis can be with other characters, and same with Jack.  The only criterion is that they don't appear together.  :)

All the scenes where they appear together -- they are all memorable.

So for me these two are the most memorable..building up to that kiss!!!

Even these two do not prepare us for the power of that kiss!

My choices :

The hopefull look on Jack's face when he asks Aguirre: "Ennis del Mar ain't been around, has he?"...
Like he was holding his breath, thinking of how would be seeing Ennis again.

Ennis' waiting for Jack. I love how anxious he is to see Jack, the way he paces, sits staring out the window, worries that Jack won't show and then the almost palpable excitement when he hears the truck pull in. Lovely

One of the scenes with Ennis that makes me cry every time is after they leave brokeback for the first time and Ennis goes into the shaded area and breaks down..

Ennis waiting for Jack at the first reunion ..the anticipation

Jack remembering after that last horrible fight..and Ennis driving away..the tears flow then too
Jack driving up to Ennis after Ennis divorce and then driving to Mexico after he feels rejected..one scene full of hope and the other full of pain and sadness..

Ennis holding the shirts at the end of the movie and when he sitting in Jack's room..that whole scene is so heartbreaking

tpe, what a wonderful idea for a thread!!

Ennis: waiting for Jack to arrive, nervously snapping his lighter open and closed, pacing, and drinking.  Contrasted with that smile when he finally arrives!!

Jack: dancing with Lureen.  There's one moment when he's looking over her shoulder and you can just see the desolation in his eyes.  He wishes she were Ennis.  For me, Jack never looks more alone than in this scene--it epitomizes the way he always longs for Ennis, in every situation.

Welcome mrskutz.

You are right here.  These scenes are powerful.  They disprove the contention that BBM is a sentimental love story.  It is a love story with sentiment -- and power.

Sunflower79 , like Christie, you show a sense of beautiful balance in these choices.

In both scenes: pain and sadness.  Deep pain.  Infinite sadness.

God.

Indeed, it is the abomination of desolation.  The eyes tell all.  You know that at that moment, HE IS ALONE.

jack: after aguirre telling him that his uncle is in the hospital, agiurre looks threw his binocular up to ennis, who is on the mountain at that time. jack seemes to be confused, what aguirre is looking at or why he is looking at ennis, so he turns around a bit a follows aguirres view. i don't know.. i love the way he looks here and the way he moves..
(hope you know what i mean, was a bad explaination)

ennis: the first scenes, waiting outside the trailer; waiting for jack; the little smile to cassie when they get to know each other and the way he says his name to her: ennis... del mar!

and of course all the others you alredy mentioned. ;)
You've changed things. Forever. There's no going back.

I love all of the scenes mentioned here.

Jack: That look of love in his eyes after Ennis rides away in the flashback scene. He was so content in that love-so very much in love with Ennis.

Ennis- it's a sad one. When he finds the shirts. To me when he realizes what they are it looks like he could vomit- like so many emotions come surging through him all at once and it's too much for him. The way he puts his hand on the shirt and then embraces his Jack.  :\'(

Ennis, the scene when he's waiting for Jack after 4 years, smoking, drinking beer and being more and more depressed by the waiting until he hears Jack's truck, he looks at the window, smiles, and rush outside to yell Jack F*ckin Twist  :-\\

Jack, feeling rejected and crying after the divorce scene, driving to Mexico... and when he picks up this male prostitute, he looks so sad  :-\\ :\'(

Looks like we have another killer thread  :\'( :\'( :\'(

You're all right. It's too hard to choose officially. But I'll go with:

Jack - the drive to Mexico (heartbreak you could actually physically feel)

Ennis - finding the shirts (ditto)

How could anyone not love them?!

Just when I thought I might go one day without a tear shed for our boys, you all bring up again the most moving moments, little bruises to the heart.     :\'(   I love all your choices and they've brought back the sweetest and most bitter-sweet of memories.   ^f^

My choices (at this moment, anyway     :-\\ )

Ennis:  I have to agree with everyone who picked the waiting for Jack before the reunion kiss scene.  His nerves and anticipation just vibrate out of his body.  Has a lover ever been awaited with such intense longing before???  All possibilities are before him at this moment and all possibilities start and end with his Jack.

Jack: The Thanksgiving scene.  It's like watching the fall out of the divorce misunderstanding and his going to Mexico. I think here we see the way Jack has been irreversibly altered by those events.  He has been tempered like steel, and now will not bend to the world at every push; he's learned to push back.  It's heartbreaking but inevitable.

And FlwrChld, you speak such truth .. how could anyone not love them???

Tpe ... you have again started us on another emotional path.  Thank you!  :-*

Yes, the smile he gives Cassie is quite interesting, no?  Thank you for mentioning that.  It is so quizzical.  The same with Ennis's smile when he says "No more dancing for me I hope.".

Your Jack scene is quite beautifully articulated.  "He has been tempered like steel...".  This is quite beautiful.  Perfect.
