There's the "left out in the cold" idea of being outside things - they're outsiders in a homophobic society, outsiders in their marriages. Ttheir meetings take place outside, and often on the cold, as they were, at the end, in the cold of the snow on Brokeback. That snow came and went quickly but Aguirre, theri Cassandra, says there's a worse one coming, and he's right. Jack says near the end "Going to snow tonight for sure" ; whether he's right or not about literal snow, after this the coldness between them appears. The snow pushed them off the mountain after their first summer and was I think indicative of things to come.

A bit OT, but I always thought the snow and an impending storm was just an excuse that Mr Aguirre used to spite them and break up the whole Ennis & Jack thing he witnessed happening.  Remember Ennis pointing out that the snow didn't even stick...?

Somehow I still get the sense that Aguirre used the storm as an excuse to play god and break them up...maybe he thought that their "messing around" was going to cause him more loss and used the impending storm as an excuse instead of confronting them about what he saw...sorry WAY

That is the way I see it also gimmejack. Aguirre saw no reason to pay the boys so they could attend to each other instead of the sheep. This feeling, for me, was reinforced when Aguirre told Jack, "Twist, you guys wasn't gettin' paid to leave the dogs baby-sit the sheep while you stemmed the rose."

I think if Aguirre'd felt that stronly he's have brought them down at one - didn't need an excuse. He was employing them. The "stemming the rose" is just a way of teling Jack he knows about them and why he won't employ him the next year. Aguirre's a nasty little man who likes having power over people - he knows he can frighten Jack and does it.

He leaves the sheep and the two of  them up there until there's a risk to the sheep - his first concern is making money and he says he wants fewer losses than he had the year before.

I love the afterglow motel scene.  Jack and Ennis really felt comfortable with each other... too bad that they couln't/didn't really talk about thier love and attraction to each other...

When you think of it, it's the only scene where they're together in the warmth and comfort of a room and the sex is for pleasure, not even remotely as a way of keeping warm, which is what it at first seems in FNIT.

That is the way I understood it also.

Well, there was building chemistry between the two. If Jack hadn't of grabbed Ennis's hand and placed it 'own himself' it would of probably happened anyway. It was fate. I think being drunk helped the situation, but they definitly had a thing for each other. One way or another, Ennis was going to get jack on all fours.

I think the drinking had more to do with it than the chill.  The inclination was already there, but the drinking loosened the inhibitions and voila!

This picture always makes me well up.....I think it's the sad look on Ennis' face. Jack's just asked him "what are we gonna do now" and Ennis is facing up to the truth that he can't do what he wants to do so badly. There's such a sharp contrast between this and the shot a couple of seconds earlier where he's got that little half smile on his face after Jack tells him he redlined it all the way :\'(

Give me a twenty  anyway, i love the picture, poor Ennis looks sad (whats new?) but he looks heart broken, and the way his eyes gleasen in the light, it looks like he's crying.

I think Ennis was pretty close to tears here. That seems to be the case whenever he's shooting Jack's airplane out of the sky, actually - it's the same when he says "ain't no reins on this one" :\'(

You know, I didn't realize this until something I read in one of the fanfics made me think of it ... but really, we see Jack cry after the divorce debacle, when Ennis turns him away, but even though we (usually) consider Jack to be the more openly emotional one, it's Ennis we see in tears or close to tears more often.  Instances I can think of:

Leaving Brokeback he breaks down in the alley;
in this motel scene he seems close to tears;
as you say, NoReins, he looks close to tears when he says "ain't no reins ...",
of course, breaking down at the lake that last time;
when he's talking to Lureen on the phone, seems like he's fighting tears;
at Jack's parents house, both as he's looking around the room (tears) and finding the shirts (many, many tears);
And that last "Jack, I swear .. "

Sorry if that's OT ... but I hadn't really noticed his tears in this motel scene until this thread was started, and now it's got me seeing tears everywhere ...

True, kathy!  I'd forgotten that scene!   

It's been my experience that when people suppress their emotions for long periods of time, they become so "full up" that any additional added feelings tend to spill over ... there's just not enough room to contain everything, something has to be let out to release the pressure or you explode.  I often suspect that people easily brought to tears are holding on to many things from their past that should have been released long ago.  Same for Ennis, I think.  In this motel scene the stress of realizing that he can't have what he wants or grant Jack his hearts desire, pushes the tears close to the surface.

And the fact that he doesn't let them fall adds to the weight he's already carrying inside.

This may well be the most intimate scene in the film, IMO.  It's that time after the love-making that both are the most vulnerable, relaxed, unassuming, and open to one another.  Even Ennis, who is so close-mouthed, lets some of his feelings slip out inspite of his natural reticence.  This is a pivotal scene in that, if there ever was a questiion as to whether Ennis and Jake were in love or in lust, the question is answered here.  This is lovel  The physical desire is slaked for the time being and they are just enjoying each other as lovers do.  I love this scene -- one of my favorites.
