It makes one think...if same sex relationships had not been so taboo over the years, we could have witnessed a similar scene with some of our favorites from Hollywood's "Golden Age."  This may be a bit <OT> but now I am picturing this same scene with leading men from a former era.

*Dreams* . . . .  :d)  <^(  :d)  <^(

One can dream.  :)

Thats why this motel scene is so wonderful: it is strangely familiar.

<^(  Who would have thought passing comments on smoking would lead to such romantic dreams ...  <^(  Thank you!  ^f^

One of the tenderest moments in the whole film, for me ... The kiss Jack presses to Ennis' hair, just before he says "what are we gonna do now??".  So much love and yearning and need in that simple gesture.

Sometimes, when I'm in a fanciful mood, this whole motel scene has an ethereal feel to it, for me. "Otherworldly" because for a brief moment they are neither of the world nor in it, there is just each other. With all the possibilities and pitfalls still just ghosts in the air, without substance or the ability to harm.  Then the die is cast by those last words we hear from Ennis in that room, and once they leave the Siesta their destiny is set.  This smoky room becomes to me the transition between their innocent freedom on Brokeback and the illusory freedom of their future "fishing" trips.

Like I said ... fanciful thoughts, considering the very earthy reason they're in the motel room in the first place ...  :-[

Yes, it is otherwordly.  The lighting, most especially so.  I assume the light comes from the neon Motel sign, but is bathes them with a ruddy hue in the middle of the dark night.

Is it the color of blood?

Nay; but perchance it was the color of love...

Whow Cowboy!  Hot stuff!  I never thought of that, but now I can so easily picture it.  And of course, the ladies together, too.

I love the whole motel room scene.

I can feel how much they love each other and how comfortable they are with each other. It's amazing.

Only Ennis could say so much with a little tug on the arm. You can see how happy he is to be with Jack, to be himself, to not have to hold up that heavy wall and hide... yet you can see how lost he feels, lost in himself.

Jack knows exactly who Ennis is, while Ennis doesn't really understand who he is at all. It's painful to look in his eyes while Jack is holding him. You can see the inner conflict going on. He's letting Jack hold him, enjoying and embracing it, but also knowing that who he is at that moment isn't someone he necessarily wants to be. He just doesn't understand himself. All he knows is that when he's with Jack, he's happy.

Of course we liked it.  That's such a wonderful and interesting scene, and your post describes Ennis perfectly.  I love especially, "Only Ennis could say so much with a little tug on the arm."  And everything else you said about his poor conflicted self.

You can see the pain in Jack's eyes.... holding on to Ennis and not wanting to ever let go. Knowing how deeply he feels for him, and realizing that Ennis isn't ready to have any of it... at least not embrace it like Jack wants to.  :(

Jake and Heath did a great great job.

They certainly did.  There are so many places in the whole film where the dynamics between them are expressed in such subtle ways, and these two men are just excellent at that kind of acting.  It is so not a caricature of "love" or "desire" or "tortured" or "angry" or any of it.  They did it all so genuinely.

Anyway, I want to say again what you mentioned about that tug on Jack's arm.  I know this has been talked about previously, but since Ennis had such trouble putting his feelings into words, or even recognizing in words what his feelings were, he expressed himself more with his body than with words.  And this little movement is a perfect example.

Boy, thinking about "expressing" themselves in that bed just before this scene that we see...  Whew.  (I need an icon for fanning oneself.)

I just noticed when I was looking at this photo. The expression on Jack's face.

He looks like he has been satisfied out of his mind. ;)

Sorry if that sounded dirty, but that's what it looks like. Sought of a "Wow" face.
He has waited four years and finally they're back together again.  <^( <^( <^(

Haha! I'm glad I could help find the words.

I think what makes the whole motel room scene so great for me is that Ennis is letting Jack hold him. Ennis, this tough, rugged guy who shows little to no emotion to the outside world, is letting himself be held. It's so beautiful. It's like you can see the real Ennis, underneath all of his layers. I don't think he would allow anyone else to hold him... at least not in that manner.

Yes he is, because he's finally where he's meant to be, where he belongs - in Jack's arms. Erica, you said it beautifully.

One of those still points in a turning world, and one of the few occasions when they have time to simply be together, rather than doing things. Very few other shots in the film showw them in that way.
