One can dream.
Thats why this motel scene is so wonderful: it is strangely familiar.

Who would have thought passing comments on smoking would lead to such romantic dreams ...

Thank you!

One of the tenderest moments in the whole film, for me ... The kiss Jack presses to Ennis' hair, just before he says "what are we gonna do now??". So much love and yearning and need in that simple gesture.
Sometimes, when I'm in a fanciful mood, this whole motel scene has an ethereal feel to it, for me. "Otherworldly" because for a brief moment they are neither of the world nor in it, there is just each other. With all the possibilities and pitfalls still just ghosts in the air, without substance or the ability to harm. Then the die is cast by those last words we hear from Ennis in that room, and once they leave the Siesta their destiny is set. This smoky room becomes to me the transition between their innocent freedom on Brokeback and the illusory freedom of their future "fishing" trips.
Like I said ... fanciful thoughts, considering the very earthy reason they're in the motel room in the first place ... :-[
