Hi Kathy,

This debate has been raging for a while....there is a thread dedicated to it.  Some people hear it, some people dont.  I did once, but have never heard it since, so I am thinking I imagined it.  Just seeing Ennis cry the way he does is enough for me....he doesnt have to say "I love you"....we know.

Well, using that logic Christie, why do you have to see Ennis cry, we know he did.  When he came downstairs with the shirts his eyes were all red and tearfilled.

After posting my previous post I realized that saying "I love you" would be the perfect thing to say even if Heath was getting himself into the "mood" to cry convincingly right after that.

Tell you what...truth is, sometimes I miss you so much I can hardly stand it...

You mean you'd rather we didnt see Ennis cry?  Just seeing him come downstairs with the shirts and eyes filled with tears would not be enough for me.....we needed to see Ennis find those shirts, touch them, smell them, and finally let his feelings for Jack out while holding the shirts......and Ennis needed to let those feelings out.

Of course Christie. And the "I love you" is a part of those feelings.  Those words are the first time they were ever said in two hours and 14 minutes.

Maybe we should ask him.  It seems like all the interviews always asked about the kiss (sexy but big deal) mist of the burning questions were never asked.

Interesting suggestion Mactwck.  I did just that months ago. I sent letters to Jake and Heath through their agent.  I asked Heath if indeed he said "I love you" in the closet scene and I asked Jake if Heath said, "I'm sorry. I'm so sorry" and did he reply "It's alright." in the second night in the tent.

To date...no reply.

I don't think he says it... I think these three seconds are the little extra that SHOWS/ PROOVES that Ennis loved Jack...

Well, I know he does say it as I have heard it. So, it seems we cancel each other out.

Fact is Kathy, some hear it and some do not. Fact is, there is only one person on the planet who will even convince me I did not hear Ennis say, "I love you," and that one person is Heath Ledger.

Hey neighbor:  Yeah, I swear I heard it too.  It was one of the times I was at the theater by myself and taking notes in the dark, and I couldn't believe what I thought I heard.  But I haven't researched it thoroughly at home with the DVD's.  So, I'm glad you heard it too.  You know, I understand people learn a lot of unheard dialogue by watching with the subtitles on, yes?  Even though I think the subtitle-writers might not always get it right, but still, I'll have to do that sometime, also.

I never watch subtitles Kathy, NEVER. They can be so inaccurate. I heard and continue to hear Ennis say "I love you." He says it as he is exhaling and he says it fast.  It is more like a whisper in fact.  The fact that you heard it when you weren't expecting to is proof enough it is there. If others can not hear it that is too bad because it adds so much to the movie. These words, "I love you", were coming from a very repressed man who for 20 years could not admit his love. These words, "I love you" being spoken only once in a 2 hour and 14 minute movie that is filled with love...beautiful...simply beautiful. And then, to learn that Ennis cried his heart out right after saying them. It was the moment of transformation for Ennis.  Ennis' heart was battling his fears and his heart was finally winning.

You're right about hearing them -- I was not purposely listening for them, and thre they were.  And I so agree that it's extremely meaningful for Ennis to be saying that, after 20 years of neither of them (presumably) saying it to each other.  I get chills, what  you said, the moment of transformation, Ennis's heard battling his fears...

he may not have said the words before :) and btw I insist on disagreeing unil proven otherwise :) but when Ennis says to Jack last time they met "i'ts because of you that I'm like this, I'm nowhere, I'm nothing" that is pretty much a statement of love to me.

But then, what is in the film, Ennis bringing those shorts down and asking for them IN FRONT OF JACKS DAD that , to me, is also a very powerful statement of his love :) Let's not forget that taht might be all Ang Lee ment we needed :)

I agree Esme.....Ennis said I love you in many different ways.  And yes, when Ennis asks Jack's mum if its ok to take those shirts, in front of them both, KNOWING what they would both interpret that request to mean, that is a huge and powerful statement of Ennis' love for Jack.

Less is more, and this film has shown that time and time again.

I just have one question. Why is it so important to try to destroy the one moment in a movie that means so much to many of us?  You didn't hear it? I am sorry. Perhaps you will some day.  But why try to destroy it for those who did?

Well, I am a stubborn old bastard, I know what I heard, and I will not allow anyone to destroy it for me.  So, I guess you can stop trying now.

I am not trying to destroy anything.  I love this film as much as you, as much as anyone on this board.  That is why I am here.  Just because we think differently about this, does not mean there has to be any hostility surrounding it.  We are all entitled to our opinions.

Then why can't people on the opposing side simply say, "Well, I haven't heard it. Perhaps some day I will."

I listen intently to various sequences; sometimes I'm sure I hear things, other times I don't. Does it matter? If what we hear, or think, we hear, adds to the experience, fine. If not, fine. The movie is what it is uniquely to each of us and totally to all of us.

You were replying to mine Patriot1 I guess...

Well, what if I think it spoils it having Ennis saying the word and it is more perfect for me to not hear it?

because of low speak, different languages and perhaps different qualities on speakers it varies what we all hear on this film and it is why we differ in opinion.

I agree with you 100% Esme.  Then instead of saying, "...and btw I insist on disagreeing unil proven otherwise..." and "I don't think he says it... ", wouldn't it be better to say, "I haven't heard it, and I prefer not to hear it because I believe it would take away from the film."?  Kathy and I are not the only two that hears it. Have we all gone mad and are hearing voices? Kathy wasn't even expecting to hear it and she did.  I will even grant you that the first time I heard it, it might have been the power of suggestion in the discussion here.  But Kathy never read that discussion before she heard it.  She heard it because it is there.  But you, you have never heard it. Perhaps because you don't want to hear it and that is fine with me.  But please, don't try to destroy that moment for those who did by saying, "I don't think he said it..." in such a way as to mean that the rest of us are crazy. "I didn't hear it and I prefer not to" is more than enough.

Esme, I don't know what the others think of this scene, I  couldn't speak for them if I did.  But to me, this is the turning point of the movie. This is the turning point of Ennis's life.  I sat and watched a man loving his friend and showing it by ordering soup instead of beans, by shooting an elk instead of letting Jack shoot a sheep, and other ways. But he never could tell Jack he loved him. "What about you," Jack says to Ennis. "Me, I don't know." Ennis replies. Jack, his best friend, drives for 14 hours only to have Ennis send him away after 1 minute and 28 seconds. Jack, his best friend sits there and tells Ennis, "Truth is...sometimes I miss you so much I can hardly stand it." and without a word, Ennis turns and looks into the fire as if he can't understand why Jack would miss him so much.

Then Ennis finds the shirts that have been hanging in Jack's closet for 20 years.  For 20 years Ennis' shirt has been embracing Jack's. Look at Ennis' face. He is shocked. He trembles, his breathing trembles. Ennis has discovered that Jack was in love with him and not only loved him as a friend. Ennis discovers and finally allows himself to admit he is in love with Jack also and says it, finally after 20 years, "I love you." and then breaks down into tears because he will never be able to tell Jack that he loves him. Ennis will never be able to lay next to Jack and whisper into Jack's ear, "I love you." Jack is gone, and Ennis cries bitterly for the loss and for never before telling Jack he loved him, not even as a friend.  Ennis came downstairs a new man. Ennis realized he is in fact a queer and he lost the only person he ever really loved. That is what that scene means to me. Don't know if it is what Ang Lee intended, but it is the way I see it and it is the part of the movie where I cry the hardest, for our two boys, for the wasted 20 years and for the sweet life they could have had on the Twist Ranch, out in the middle of nowhere. Each of our boys getting their wish; Ennis to be anonymous and Jack to live with Ennis on a little cow and calf operation.

If you don't see it that way, well, that is ok. I just hope however you see it, it is as beautiful for you as the way I see it is for me.

Oh Patriot I am sitting at my desk crying. Beautifully stated.  :\'(

the danger with the internet is that it is impossible to see or hear how something is intended to sound... you can put a  *^) but is it silly or sarcasm?? you know?

Well :) to you and a  :^^) this is one of the best parts of the film and I sure hope there will be an extended edition with more of this in it :)

And Edgar...HAHAHA  ^-^ I just cannot spell and when it is 35 degrees in my livingroom my fingers stick to the keyboard ...I am notorious for missing double consonants... not in norwegian is IKKE and I usually spell it ikek.... ;) so I guess a pair of shorts wasn't the worst I could get for ya ;)

Just beautiful Patriot1, thank you.
The most difficult scene was the paragraph where, on the mountain, Ennis holds Jack and rocks back and forth, humming, the moment mixed with childhood loss and his refusal to admit he was holding a man.

- Annie Proulx -

From the vibration of the floorboard on which they both stood, Ennis could feel how hard Jack was shaking.

Oh, sigh...  So beautiful, just reading these words, P1.  Tragically beautiful...

But then, what is in the film, Ennis bringing those shorts down and asking for them IN FRONT OF JACKS DAD that , to me, is also a very powerful statement of his love :) Let's not forget that taht might be all Ang Lee ment we needed :)

Oh my gosh, I totally missed this... I didn't realize Jack had "shorts" in his room... What did they look like? boxers or briefs???

 (^) &*& ~) ::)

Ha!  I wasn't going to say anything about the shorts.  Not meanin' no disrespect, sir and ma'am, but how funny would that be, if he carried down Jack's underwear and paraded it past old man Twist?
