Yes,surely he felt somehow to be in a dream...As a matter of fact,any person's "first time" can be like a dream,specially if this person is someone you wish and love.And it's sure that Ennis had dreamt in making love with Jack because he wished him; even if sometimes,this dream became a nightmare,because of his contradictions and,we can't deny,the enormous step that a man like him must do to fulfill this kind of dream.

Jack smiled sad. “Yeah, Ennis. Love.” Leaned forward and kissed Ennis’s temple, whispered, “What’d you think it was, all this time?”

In a way, we think of dreams as (1) either an escape from reality or (2) a reflection/manifestation of a higher (i.e., inner) reality that may or may not be openly acknowledged when awake.  I think both ways of looking at things applies to SNIT, when Ennis escapes his self-conflicted nature for a brief moment of freedom, and as a manifestation of a deep acceptance within his part of the reality of love, no matter how/what he feels about that love.

Thanks MPJ.  I admit that I love the symbolism of dreams.  For this, I love the dream sequences in the ss, though I understand that it would have been difficult to realize them in the movie.  But I think the movie does approximate it in several "dreamy" scenes, and SNIT is at the top of the list, together with the DE.
