BBM has well-earned all of the praise and the awards heaped upon it. Beyond that, the progressive entertainment industry loves this opportunity to bitch slap American conservatives by praising and awarding a film to which they are opposed - and by which they are appalled. Awarding this movie has become the industry's revenge for everything from the proposed Constitutional amendment prohibiting same sex marriage, to the ongoing military policy of "Don't ask, don't tell!" It's a punch in conservatives' groin to nominate BBM for multiple awards, then let America's most famous gay cowboys ride into the sunset with Golden Globes, People's Choice Awards, and, quite possibly, a saddlebag full of Oscars!

Movie-makers and lovers are, in effect, saying, "Take this, you conservative a--holes!" I love the attitudes and I'm proud the movie is being awarded!

That is really neat Station, I kind of try to stay away from the politics with this one, but it's there obviously with this gay marriage issue floating around! So I do wonder what conservatives think of it.

WTF ?? How can you be moved by a work of art founded in the power of love and have that much hate and revenge in you. This may sound naive but I think I'm better for having experienced the entire Brokeback phenomena.I'm trying to live more in the moment and be more patient and respectful of folks. This film has brought different people from different backgrounds all together on one topic -love. The music alone has opened hearts -its TOPS ON iTunes and Amazon downloads .Also the power of this film to change minds -you must have been very hurt to be so cynical. Open your self up to all this man -chill on the mountain a while. I'm taking the time to tell you this with all respect -thanks for reading it

Ethan, once again I stand with you. I hope that this forum doesn't get politicized. We're here to share our love for and appreciation of the film. BBM is a work of art, pure and simple. Annie Proulx and Ang Lee had no political agendas (their own claims). Let's not turn this masterpiece into a political football - if we do, many folks will pull the plug on seeing it. We'd also run the risk of cheapening the artistry by pushing it into a back seat.

I second that statement!

The short story and the film deal with human themes and not hot button political issues. The BBM time period was 1963 to 1983, long before red state/blue state entered everyday jargon. Time and place are important factors in any piece of literature and we need to leave BBM in its setting and just enjoy this little gem.

Let me respectfully remind you: There is no movie without a message. That may not have been the idea of its makers, but a message there will always be. Everything we say, everything we do, contains a message and a political meaning, like it or not. And in times where all kinds of freedom are at risk (and surely we live in such times?) the political impact of a movie such as BBM grows more important.

Some of us love this movie, because it is clearly having an impact on society, on mainstream viewers on mainstream cinema. Because it changes things. W should be proud of this impact, instead of saying that we wished BBM were viewed only for its merits. The greatest merit for any work of art is the ability to reach the hearts and minds of people and to change them. That is what BBM does. And that is political. I'm glad about it.

I agree that movies have messages - I prefer to use the word themes. I disagree that a message/theme is the same as politics. BBM points out prejudice, gender roles, acceptance , rural attitudes and many other themes or messages. BBM is not lobbying for gay marriage, gay adoption etc.

Politics and political tactics are concerned with power and influence especially in the partisan arena. And it can also mean power and influence within an organization (office politics).

"Fahrenheit 911" was a political film - it attempted to influence the electorate to vote for one party over another. Personally I enjoyed Fahrenheit, but it was political. BBM is not espousing a political agenda. Yes BBM is touching peoples hearts because it is a simple love story and not an "in your face" political film.

I believe we just have different ideas of what "political" means. I would say that everything that takes place in a public arena, even a movie, any movie, has a political impact. And what you listed as brokeback's points of impact, especially concerning gender roles etc., is very political for me. We have to get away from seeing party politics as the only political arena. Parties don't change the way things are, the way societies and the people that make up society act, react, live, think, see movies, whatever. During the 80s there used to be a slogan: The private is political. Very true. And what we see happening now with BBM is just that. The private act of going to see a movie turns into something shared by many (on this board for instance), making it a social and political phenomenon. If you don't like the word, just fill in another instead

I agree. I have enough dealing with PBS and my denial of being an addict.
