All the leaning. They lean against everything !!!

I especially love the way Jack leans against his truck the first time he checks out Ennis in Signal.  And the pose he adopted is a classic -- unforgettable.  :)

Greenfrog, I know jerasjr gets upset when anyone says that Jack was crusing his heart out then, but whenever I see that picture I get such a good feeling in my heart. It reminds me so much of all the men I have seen leaning against a bar or pool table striking the same pose.

"Here I am cowboy. Are you interested?"      :8

With my total lack of experience I have no idea if anyone has ever said that phrase in the heat of the moment....but I just KNEW you were going to put the FNIT pic in that bunch.

It's always seemed a bizarre expression to me, but I don't live in a country with a culture of guns ( except that Nottingham is now notorious for gang shootings1) but guns seem appropriate to where Jack and Ennis are - there's a sort of frontier feel about it and I guess guns are more of a familiar point of reference for them than they'd be for me. and I suppose the notion of something explosive and powerful is appropriate too.

Welshwitch, as an English lady you have to remember this country has always had and treasured having guns. It was the average citizen and their guns that were at the city of Lexington as the Brits marched through on their way to Concord to confiscate a huge supply of gunpowder for the citizens in cane it was ever needed.

It was citizens from all over New England and their guns that defended Bunker Hill in Boston until they ran out of ammo. Americans always owned guns. The huge part guns in the hands of private citizens played in the part of our war with Great Britain for our independence was so important that it was protected in our Constitution in Article 2 of our Bill of Rights.

Out West, guns were important to fight the Indians, outlaws and to hunt with. We have always been a people with guns. They are a part of our heritage. In many places today young men are taught how to care for and shoot a gun before he is taught how to spit. (We seem to spit a lot here. Ever watch a football or baseball game?)

Guns don't kill people...people kill people. I have 4 guns in my home right now. Not one of them has gotten off their shelf and killed someone.  If guns are taken from people, people determined to kill someone will find other ways to do it. Man has always killed other men even before there was a gun.

And who can forget how Jack leans on the red truck waiting for Ennis at the start of the reunion up the mountains?

The color red is absolutely symbolic here.  He is the image of love aroused...

Oh -- that's a good one, the red.  Red shirt, red truck.  And then the purple shirt scene.  Colors important symbols, too.  The nature-blues-and-greens-and-whites.  The black and white hats.  The pastel of Jack's home, the dingy brown-tones of Ennis's home.

I so agree.  He's looking right at Ennis while he does this.  He's not looking off in the distance and just kind of hanging against the truck.  He's posing for Ennis.  And poor Ennis just scuffing his boots around and hiding under his hat...

Ennis always seemed to have worn white or pale colours, while Jack wore dark or stronger colours.  Sun and moon.  Day and night.  :)

Campfires and firelight.  Even when they make love for the first time in the SNIT, they are all aglow with firelight.

I will go for passion.  It is for the fire and warmth of love against the chill of loneliness and death...

Oh yes!  How could I not mention that -- that's a very strong symbol element for me.  And not just their clothes, but their hair and features.

I do find the contrasts so beautiful.  And the symbolic element is strongly felt, even if it is not explicitly articulated.

I don't know if this would count as a symbol or not, but I'll post it anyway.

Ennis, literally, in the closet.  :\'(

I think definitely a symbol, the closet.  And Ennis in the closet especially.

Yes, that is indeed a literal and figurative symbol.

It needs to be put next to the shot of the shirts in the closet, and the picture postcard of the mountain - there's a symbolism in the movement of the shirts from a closet where they were a secret, watched over by Jack's mother but without any context, to a closet where they were seen every day, by Ennis who understood their significance. In a sense their meaning has been enhanced by the move, though their impact on Ennis is at best two-edged - a reminder of the time on the mountain, but also a constant remoinder of what he's lost.

They are the first thing he sees when he opens the closet.  They serve as a reminder of enduring love and as a source of rebuke.
