Don't think Jake is an expert dancer - inone of the background things there's a section of him being taught how to do that dance he does with Lureen, which doesn't exactly look difficult.

Kathy, i agree with you. We've all spent so long watching the movie, reading the ss and above all talking on here that almost anything  can set us off. There are so many symbols in the movie, and as tpe says the movie itself symbolizes many things to us, then the forum has a symbolic significance in our lives.Just the three letters, BBM, are enough to start up trains of associations and memories.

Right, even a cup of coffee or apple pie makes me think of it.

Not to mention Cherry cake...

Right -- it's not only the symbols in the movie, but the movie itself in its entirety (and all the people involved in it), and the experience we've all had of the movie, the experience continued and built upon here, and learning what other people's experiences are.

I mean, even "Congratulations" is a loaded word now!  Not to mention "thread" and "OT" and such.

As to Jake and dancing -- that's interesting.  Thanks for that tidbit.  I don't recall reading that, but I can see it.  Not that I'm currently a great dancer, but I know a natural when I see one, and my mom was a dancer, etc.  Not that it matters at all if Jake is a good dancer or not (we know he's a good kisser, and a good hugger), but I did notice that slight awkwardness in the dancing scenes of Jack.  However, maybe he can hip-hop or whatever, modern dancing, but had to learn a proper waltz.  I'm kind of surprised that wasn't something he learned in his talented family.  Sorry, OT -- what thread am I in?  Or yes -- symbols.  Well, dancing is one of them, so I guess it's okay.

kathy

May I suggest that if this topic interests a number of you, do start a new thread on either "Heath as Dancer", or "Jake as Dancer", or both in their respective parts of the forum.  By KD's admission, Jake is too much a home-body and doesn't seem to like partying out too much.  THis is consistent with your observatons.

Thank you for the suggestion, but I think we're done with dancing -- just an interesting aside.  Yes?

ok.  Dancing and the dance are certainly great BBM symbols, to be sure.

At the end of Shakespeare's comedies, the newly-united couple often dance - supposedly as a sign of the restoration of harmony. But dancing doesn;t work like that in BBM, rather the opposite in fact.

In all cases we see it, I think, it's something the women want to do.  The men would be totally fine without dancing.

Does this say then that women here, and perhpas in real life, are more interested in conforming with social norms and rituals than men? Neither Ennis nor Jack seem particularly interested in them, though Ennis seems more hostile than Jack, who can go through the motions but doesn't seem to be very involved. Or is this just a way of showing that the rest of the worls is unimportant to both of them , compared with the presence or absence of the other?

Yes, I think all that is true, regarding social norms.  But probably, as to dancing, women just like to dance more than men -- it's kind of like foreplay, which, generally speaking, women like more than men?  But then, for all those folks at the country club (is that what it would be called?) in Texas, for the men as well as the women, dancing is part of the whole lifestyle.  And the men who dance well, it's a kind of status symbol.

If things had been different, in the 80's, and Ennis and Jack went to gay bars, maybe Jack might have convinced Ennis to dance with him...  At least a slow dance -- that would have been nice.

I do think dancing was one form by which the movie sought to draw the characters into a socially acceptable setting.  It did seem to imply conforming to societal norms as much as a form of entertainment and expression of intimacy.

I wonder if Ennis would ever have consented to dance openly with Jack.  Dancing with Jack in a public setting would have been a strong statement as far as Ennis was concerned.  It would have had great symbolic import.

How about the eyes watching over Jack and Ennis.

Ennis was always afraid that somebody might see them or that when he was walking down the street, people knew his secret.

Good one, Greenfrog.  And he was right -- Aguirre, Alma.  Not as pervasive as he thought, but still...

<^( deifnitely.. there are things like this that I find myself doing and not even realizing it.

And going with quotes I was over my mother's house the other day and she honestly said "it smelled like cat piss" I said nothing and then she added "or worse". All I could do was shake my head and walk away cause it was just too weird. She's only seen the movie twice, there is no way she remembered that line she can't even remeber their names.  ;D

Yes, that phrase is, for me, now forever associated with BBM.  :)

This is becoming cattist.

I've never quite worked out how the pup-tent got to smell of cats' piss - where had it been before it was up on the mountain?  *o) sorry.

Cattist!  LOL.  I always wondered about that, too.  Maybe "cat piss" was just a bad smell Jack was most familiar with.  As to what actually gave the pup tent whatever smell it had...have to surmise about that...

That craggy peak of the mountain itslef could almost be a symbol of the obstacles dividing them - Jack at least thinks there's somewhere to go on the other side; Ennis never gets beyond the lower slopes.

The shirts in the closet by far to me is the symbol I love the most. They represent Jack's undying love Trough the years and years of pain and separation. Jack knew that all the pain they were going through to be together was worth it And the blood on them symbolized  that the battle they were in was one of togetherness  in the fight against the cruel world. Jack knew that whatever happened to them in their quest would be worth it in the end. I love him for it.

ANy independent "no tell motel". Of course this is not a new association except as it specifically applies to BBM.

Whenever I stargaze with my binocular, it reminded me of that scene in BBM.  Sometimes I wish I see two special stars we called Jack and Ennis.

What a lovely idea, JT -- seeing Ennis and Jack stars through your binoculars.  We'd rather it had been you gazing at them than Aguirre!

Off-topic:  So, a stargazer...how lovely.  You must live where you can see them, unlike some people, such as me.

There are symbols everywhere in this film. My current favs are the 3 pictures of the mountain which are shown in scenes, paced through the film, each bigger then the last: brokeback looming larger and larger for both men.

And the Cowboy hats. Black/White. battered. The bands, E.'s completely twisted, JT's more and more twisted as time goes on and it all starts to kill him. How the hats themselves are used as symbols, how the hats themselves are used to hide.

But I think my all-time favorite is after FNIT, Ennis readying his mount with that pommel looming large. The rifle, how he holds it and then holsters it, effectively surrendering..... Being from New York, I remember thinking--and still do, every time I see him do it--- that it was just SOOOO SWEEET of Ennis not to blow Jack's head off after humping him in the tent.  I mean it was just...sweet. It really moved me.

Brokeback_1, I like your symbols, and observations.  As to the mountains, seeing them as looming larger as the story goes on.  I wouldn't have noticed that.  Nor did I observe the hat bands themselves.

Then...you think it's "sweet" that Ennis doesn't blow Jack's head off?  I need an emoticon or something, can't tell how you mean that, and what being from New York has to do with it.  Am I being dense or what?  I do know what you mean about the pommel and cocking the gun and all, that next morning, though, that symbology.

My heart would melt for them instead of wincing.  I would hire them year ofter year to herd my sheeps and even provide them with living quarters during the off-seasons. <^(

OT:  Actually, I live in Henderson, a suburb of Las Vegas.  So nothing but the brightest stars can be seen, binoculars are often needed.  I stargaze often when I go camping in dark areas.  Oops, another association to BBM.

Indeed, camping is a good one. Or (as cited previously) fishing...  :)
