I've always felt this shows Ennis and his incredible ability focus on a job at hand. Much like the emotional focus he shows in the reunion kiss and sex scenes. Everything else is blotted out. This same ability is let loose in other ways too, i.e. the 4th of July eruption, Thanksgiving kitchen scene, etc.

To me this is Ennis in his purest form.
