What are the symbols or images that you will now forever associate with BBM Scenes?
For me, the tireiron will forever be associated in my mind with the movie and with the scene of Jack's death.

The mountain itself, i suppose, because it symbolises the heights they could reach, and their distance above the mundane world of the plains, in a remote Eden in where love is possible and the censoriousness of the world at a distance. The snow represents the purity of their passion and the rocks and their cragginess the difficulties and dangers of their love but also its ability to outlast even life. In a mystical way i see the rocks below the grass of the mountain as having thier love inscribed upon them as a record that will last until thousands of years at last erode even the mountain.

I shall never de-thorn roses ever again without thinking of the Aguirre scenes in BBM...

(But also the rose of the garden where you live.
Always the rose, always, our north and south!
Calm and ingathered like an eyeless statue,
not knowing the buried struggle it provokes.
Pure rose, clean of artifice and rough sketches,
opening for us the slender wings of the smile.
(Pinned butterfly that ponders its flight.)
Rose of balance, with no self-inflicted pains.
Always the rose!)

Sheep!!
I travelled to the countryside earlier this week. And while staring out the window at the farms passing by..I'd often see sheep in the fields. I sat there imagining seeing Jack or Ennis on their horses tending the sheep. :c)

Lovely. I know a related thread derals witn some religious/spiritual symbolism for this one. buty it need not be seen that way. To be sure, sheep and shepherds I will always associate with BBM. :)

True. :) Viewing a can of beans will never be the same again!

All of the above!! Also anytime i spot a tent my mind goes straight to BBM. Moustaches, denim shirts and big belt buckles too. ;)

And of course, the harmonica will always remind me of Jack... :\'(

Oh my there are just so many!
My whole life seems to be full of BBM references. Going camping (the tent), eating beans (sick of beans!), watching a rodeo show the other day immediately made me think of Jack Twist, the countryside near where I live is covered with....sheep, seeing a sign for a Pentacostal church made me think of Jack Twist singing Water Walking Jesus....
The list just goes on and on. Even when I don't realise it, BBM has entered my subconscious. But that's ok, because I dont want it to leave.
-
There are just too many to be named. Basically anything mountain, anything cowboy and anything rural life will bring me back to BBM.
-

So, so true. I still see that commercial for Budweiser with the cowboy standing next to his horse in the stables and it makes me cry because it brings back Brokeback for me.
-
i think about beautiful mountain and blue sky behind ennis and jack but the one i never forget is the love of them>๐<

I realized that I can't receive postcards anymore without thinking about BBM.
I was sick this weekend and received a few postcards. Made me think of Ennis and Jack. :)

When I see shirts hung one on top of the other, I see BBM.

I'll bet it was nice maggie. It is like we have our own little secret and nobody else knows what they are missing.
It is interesting to me you should mention the beans because I bought some this past week and ate them yesterday. As soon as my hand touched the can on the cupboard shelf I though of BBM. :)

Not exactly a symbol, but the sense of space and timelessness on the mountain, in contrast with the narrowness of life below. I always think of those huge skies - I believe it's Montana that gets called the big sky country but the sky dominates in so many shots here, and those long shots when Jack is high up riding among the sheep, and the panorama at the beginning as the flock makes it way up from the foothills. It all remoinds me of Firzgerald's description of " the green breast of a new world" at the end of "The Great Gatsby", a typically American sense of a new world, unspoiled and almost limitless.

I love all these symbols, and yes, I also see and feel and sense BBM everywhere. I've already said I feel like I'm channeling Ennis or Jack or Jack's Mom sometimes, with a movement.
My favorites: Jeans, cowboy boots, cowboy hats, belts with big-ass buckles, no underwear, beans, whiskey, cigs, paper bags, old trucks.

Windows are interesting because they connect the inside with th eoutside yet cut the one off from the other. They're a barrier, and one we like to see as hard and fixed, though scientifically glass is a sort of liquid and flows, or at least ancient glass did. But inlike many barriers they're transparent to light and heat. You can see the windows in the movie as a barrier, eg in the trailer between Ennis and the natural world - but the other side of the coin is that windows convey a sense of possibility and show you what's out thee if you want to put the barrier behind you. all this fits so well into the movie.

Yes dear, I knew you meant fishin' buddies but I don't get to tease you enough so jumped at the chance. ;D
You know, it is funny that I never noticed Ennis' lighter. Immediately, first viewing, I noticed that Aguirre's and Jack's were the same lighter, noticed that Ennis didn't have one on the mountain and never gave it a thought after that. I will now have to check.
Yup, Ennis' lighter was black with blue writing or symbols on it. The lighter looks to have been well used as the black is worn off around the edges.

Good point welshwitch , I agree with you. Glass can be seen as the barrier that keeps Jack and Ennis from being together, yet neither of them take the initiative to break it in order to reach each other. and in the end, glass is the barrier between Ennis and being free.... free to be himself, free to love, free to not be burdened by his mistakes he made with jack, not fighting for the best thing he had in his life.

Oh! Thank you. Okay, here's a question -- did we ever see the peak of Brokeback Mountain? In what shot might we have seen it? Which peak or which slopes were we seeing I wonder?

Duh, never mind -- I forget Brokeback Mountain isn't "real." Dumb questions.

What is a fishin' duddie? Is that like an old fuddy duddy? ;D
And why black zippos? Aguirre's and Jack's lighters were gold. Was Ennis' black?
it was late , and I was tired...but you knew I meant Fishin' buddies!!
And I believe Ennis was black...then again...I could just have written Zippos! ;)
Refresh my memory -- where else do we see Ennis's lighter? Except when he's messing with it when he's waiting for Jack? I can't tell what it looks like from the pic above (regarding windows). Black with blue on it, hmmm... Too bad that didn't show up for auction...or maybe it did.

Yes it is Kathy. It is very real. But it is a place that can not be seen because it is in our hearts and minds.

Yes I know it is very real in that sense. I just want to look at that picture and point to the peak and say that's Brokeback Mountain. And I want to know the elevation :) I'm a science nerd, besides a romantic.

And I wish it were there in the real world, because think of how great it would be to have one's own ashes scattered there - I'm serious. I love the US, wouldn't mind my mortal remains ending uo there, and can't imagine a better place than the mountain.

The symbolism of place is a very powerful thing. Mythic places, most especially. They need not exist except in one's mind and heart.

You know how they made Riverside, Iowa, the future birthplace of Captain Kirk? And that highway in New Mexico the Extraterrestrial Highway? We could go pick out some perfect mountain in Wyoming, and declare it Brokeback Mountain and see what we could get going.

Hello kathy. Vermont has already designated one of its mountains as Brokeback Mountain, and I would suspect that Wyoming would probably follow this example in a few years (if not sooner). Mythic places have a way of translating themselves into some form of reality. I guess it is a natural thing -- for people to try to approximate an imaginary place with something distinctly real. In this way, legends live on and take root...
-
I remember years ago being taken down into the cave where Zeus was born - maybe one day people will be taken up to the lower slopes where Ennis and Jack had their camp. Fictional or mythical, but more real than reality, sometimes.
-

I suspect that the Mountain in Canada could get a second name in the next few years, owing to its associations with the film. I actuually have no problem having a Brokeback Mountain designated somewhere in Alberta. As is usual, places of the mind and the heart reatin the magic no matter what location they get associated with...

Oh! Very wonderful! I didn't know about Vermont. Okay, every state should get its own Brokeback Mountain, then. Well, I'm sure some states don't want one...

My son (22) moved out with his girlfriend a couple of weeks ago and yesterday i went to watch him and a couple friends play in a softbal tournament. His friends were teasing him about the ole ball and chain and what a short leash she is keeping him on these days. I just smiled to myself because this of course reminded me of BBM, "you count the damn few times we've been together in nearly 20 years and you measure the short f*cking leach you keep me on. " i bet i smile everytime i take the dogs for a walk from now on.

I love the leaning -- that's a good "symbol"! Not just standing, but whenever they're sitting around the fire, too.
How about Jack's lying all stretched out, just comfortable and lazy as can be, napping with the dog, and then playing his harmonica while Ennis is setting up the tent not lookin' right.

It's always seemed a bizarre expression to me, but I don't live in a country with a culture of guns ( except that Nottingham is now notorious for gang shootings1) but guns seem appropriate to where Jack and Ennis are - there's a sort of frontier feel about it and I guess guns are more of a familiar point of reference for them than they'd be for me. and I suppose the notion of something explosive and powerful is appropriate too.

Welshwitch, as an English lady you have to remember this country has always had and treasured having guns. It was the average citizen and their guns that were at the city of Lexington as the Brits marched through on their way to Concord to confiscate a huge supply of gunpowder for the citizens in cane it was ever needed.
It was citizens from all over New England and their guns that defended Bunker Hill in Boston until they ran out of ammo. Americans always owned guns. The huge part guns in the hands of private citizens played in the part of our war with Great Britain for our independence was so important that it was protected in our Constitution in Article 2 of our Bill of Rights.
Out West, guns were important to fight the Indians, outlaws and to hunt with. We have always been a people with guns. They are a part of our heritage. In many places today young men are taught how to care for and shoot a gun before he is taught how to spit. (We seem to spit a lot here. Ever watch a football or baseball game?)
Guns don't kill people...people kill people. I have 4 guns in my home right now. Not one of them has gotten off their shelf and killed someone. If guns are taken from people, people determined to kill someone will find other ways to do it. Man has always killed other men even before there was a gun.

Yes, that is indeed a literal and figurative symbol.
-
It needs to be put next to the shot of the shirts in the closet, and the picture postcard of the mountain - there's a symbolism in the movement of the shirts from a closet where they were a secret, watched over by Jack's mother but without any context, to a closet where they were seen every day, by Ennis who understood their significance. In a sense their meaning has been enhanced by the move, though their impact on Ennis is at best two-edged - a reminder of the time on the mountain, but also a constant remoinder of what he's lost.

They are the first thing he sees when he opens the closet. They serve as a reminder of enduring love and as a source of rebuke.

Okay, here is a question: In that last scene, he snaps the second-to-top snap of the inside shirt, Jack's. Why was it not snapped already? Like when he brought the shirts home and put them on the hanger. You think he just hung them up and didn't snap up Jack's shirt at least? Or even snap or button his own over it, to protect "Jack" even more. Doesn't everyone, those who are relatively neat around their house, button or snap one button on a shirt that's hanging up, especially if it's going to be hanging there for a while?
I get the idea some amount of time passed between when he brought the shirts home to his trailer, and the scene we see with Junior, in which case, were the shirts unsnapped all that time? Seems he'd open that closet every day and more than once a day. Oh the things that consume me. I don't know -- I always just get to wondering, when I see that scene.

In terms of the movie, I think that was probably just something Heath did or was given to do to allow him to touch the shirts rathe than just stand there looking at them.
[In terms of tidiness, just as well you don't live here. Tjhe place is full of stuff on hangers - if buttons or any other fasteners are ever done up, it's a miracle. If stuff is hanging up I figure I'm ahead of the game. *o)]

Okay, now I looked at the story and screenplay. The story has him "a few weeks later," after visiting Jack's parents, hanging up the shirts after he had gotten the BBM postcard and brought it home. He hung up the postcard and then hung the nail and the shirts below it. In the screenplay it has Ennis snapping the top snap.
So never mind...I was just thinking out loud.

I don't know -- I always just get to wondering, when I see that scene.
kathy
Yes, I thought it peculiar at first that the screenplay would give this explicit directive -- peculiar if we note that that screenplay date indicates that almost 2 years have passed since his acquiring the shirt.
The way I think about it is that Ennis probably continually did small things as a way of fondling/handling Jack's shirt. He certainly didn't frame the shirts, and he certainly did not hang them in a less accessible place. I think he put it there so that he could be in contact with Jack's shirt everyday.
I would like to think that for Ennis, the shirsts was not like some remote relic -- to be adored from afar. I suspect he craved contact with the shirt everyday -- doing small things to Jack's shirt like snapping it on and off, smoothing creases, or straightening them out.
I suspect that Jack did the same whenever he stayed with his parents.
The shirts are a sort of connection.

You are right. For me, everything gets intermingled. But it is true: when I think of BBM, I think of them.

I know this is not a symbol as such, but of all the things that bring BBM to my mind, (and there are a lot) the overwhelming one for me is beautiful green countryside. It doesn't have to be a mountain. Just looking out the window into my garden, at the tress and grass brings them to mind. A stream or forest scene (and of course any mountain scene especially snow capped) on TV. Walking in the forest, especially if the air is crisp. Anything to do with beautiful green scenery.

Rosie , a wonderful point.
For me, it is the color GREEN. The greenery of Brokeback and the other mountains was meant to be a symbol, IMO.

Totally agree about the shirts. Jack probably only went to visit his parents after being with Ennis in the mountains and at those times he was likely upset because he knew it was going to be months before he saw Ennis again. I wouldn't be surprised if he went straight to his closet on each visit and cried into the shirts. For him, they would always be a symbol of what he wanted most in the world and couldn't have - Ennis right next to him.
After Jack's death, I really do believe that Ennis would have done the same, holding the shirts close just like he wished he could still be holding Jack. For him, they were a symbol of everything he'd lost...but also of everything he'd loved in life, even if he'd never been able to admit it.
I guess that means that I see the shirts as the ultimate symbol of Brokeback Mountain - and maybe even the ultimate symbol of love.
Anyone got a hankie? :\'( :\'( :\'(

Perfect. That's a beautiful way to look at it. Every day he would look at and touch the shirts, buttoning, unbuttoning, maybe straightening the inside one in the outside one... He could have even put them on, could have even worn Jack's shirt. Thanks.

I am a bit morbidly inclined tonight, and your comment brings to mind Poe's lines:
And so, all the night-tide, I lie down by the side
Of my darling—my darling—my life and my bride,
In her sepulchre there by the sea,
In her tomb by the sounding sea.

Hi, all. Haven't posted in a while. Good to be back. This will be a personal anecdote, but it fits in with symbols which remind one of the movie, and all the discussion about the shirts.
Part of the time I was gone, I was camping/hiking (no fishing) in the mountains with a dear friend. We shared some supplies; we've been camping many times and used to be roommates. About the same size.
I hung one of my shirts over one of his to save room in the truck. At the end of the week, we were going through all the stuff to get my stuff back in my car. I grabbed my shirt, which was similar to one of his (though he hadn't brought his similar one). He says, "Hey, are you stealing my shirt?"
"No, I'm not stealing your shirt," I said. I smiled a sort of sad smile.
He wouldn't have seen the movie.
Maybe I will steal one of his shirts next time.

Great story Edgar ^f^
This has given me an idea.
I think we should have our own "Steal your lover's shirt (and see if you can get away with it) Day"!
-
Thanks for sharing that story with us Edgar, it was very nice. It must have been a very emotive moment for you, bringing to mind the saddest scene of the movie. I love your sentence about smiling a sad smile...If like greenfrog says, you can get away with it, you steal one next time! ;)
Love from Rosie

Oh, this is so sweet... And I'll never see double-hanging the same again.
So you go camping with someone who hasn't seen BBM? Shit, that's hard. What do you talk about?? Just kidding, but seriously -- it's difficult lately to spend a lot of time with someone and NOT talk BBM.

Have we mentioned the trucks and their colours?
Jack - Black (the same as his hat).
Ennis - White (the same as his hat too).
-
And Jack's truck is always a newer model than Ennis's - shows their respective finanacial situations, but also shows that Jack's never quite become a Texas businessman driving round in some big flashy 5.5 liter-engined car.

Yes, color symbolism seems to pervade the main characters thorughout the film.
And let's not forget Jack's red truck and apparel during the reunion scene. :)

The whole film plays before your eyes.

Noel Coward quotation: "Funny how potent cheap music can be." Sme of the BBM stuff is well-known - eg "King of the Road" - and some of it just normal radio-station stuff - the most beautiful sections are the ones Santolalla composed for the movie, but the whole lot together fus into the sequence of events of the film. Classical music doesn't work in the same wy for me; it's played in so many different situations, I suppose, that it loses specific associations (except for a few pieces - the Mahler used for "Deth in Venice" being an eg for me).
I think those first plangent guitar chords are what struck me when I saw the movie the first time; they still affect me now.

Another powerfull symbol to me "WILLIE NELSON"

Yes! Willie Nelson! And of course Emmy Lou Harris, and all the rest.. The whole country music thing has taken on a new meaning for me now. I don't dismiss it off hand any more. It doesn't seem to matter what it is, a few guitar twangs and i'm back with Ennis and Jack again.

I've always liked country music -- not all of it, but I like what I like. And another thing, music-wise, that now is forever BBM-evocative to me: all the songs on the BBM music videos that people have made. Now I can never hear a certain song on the radio or wherever, if it's been made into a BBM vid that I watch. It happened again the other day, in a store -- I heard a song ("Because of You") and I immediately got lost in my own little world, there with Ennis and Jack.

I had always wondered whether there were deliberate motifs in the music, in the manner of Wagner. The opening chord seems to be such as motif.

It is wonderful: music as a universal symbol and vehicle of emotions. In this sense, it surpasses language. No matter what style, whether or not it is accompanied by words, music such as this is understandable.

All the leaning. They lean against everything !!!
I especially love the way Jack leans against his truck the first time he checks out Ennis in Signal. And the pose he adopted is a classic -- unforgettable. :)

Greenfrog, I know jerasjr gets upset when anyone says that Jack was crusing his heart out then, but whenever I see that picture I get such a good feeling in my heart. It reminds me so much of all the men I have seen leaning against a bar or pool table striking the same pose.

It's just unbelievable, that G. Santoanella wrote this accords before the film was made,
still, it's like the two shirts in the closet, one can't be without the other...

It is quite unbelieveable. Perhaps he had a very clear vision of what the short story called for -- the music is beautifully elegiac and restrained, like the movie. It is uncanny how both the music and the film captured the story so wonderfully. And yes, now I cannot think of the film without his music. As you have said, they are now inseparable in my mind.

Jack is absolutly scandalous in this pcture! And I love it.
Sure enough is. Now this has probably been said before, but another interesting aspect to this part of this scene is: not only Jack's pose, but that he's looking at Ennis as he's posing like this. (Which, number one, could be said to be just a common way to relax against a truck, you know. Right.) If he had struck this pose and looked off in the distance, as if he's not interested in Ennis, it would have been different. But he's so blatant with this -- the pose, and presenting a challenge to Ennis to look, by his staring.

Blatant is the word, IMO.
One can indeed read a lot of significance in this pose. I thought that it was most beautifully well done...

I don't know if this borders on OT, but I'll say it then quit -- just more refining of the discussion on this particular symbol of BBM ("Leaning").
What was it that was said about Jake doing this? (My memory not perfect all the time, with all this stuff flying around fast and furious.) Someone, maybe Diana O., when they saw Jake do this, thought, "hmm...I don't know...maybe that's too Jake acting like this certain character"; but they quickly realized that this post/action is very Jack, just perfect Jack.

I agree with everything that you all have said thus far. Beans, cowboys in general, all of it. But for me, the biggest thing is just dates and years. When I hear someone mention a year I will think about it and try and picture all of the characters in that time. Months as well, especially November. :(
I was working earlier and I had to tell a customer of mine a total for something they order. The total, oddly enough was $19.63. I said it and immediately made a face (was on the phone.. I don't make weird faces at my customers ;)) and gave a little inaudible sigh.

That's a good one, dates. 1963, for sure. And November 7. And August: "Whatever happened to August?" or "the trade-off was August." And "I'll be coming through on the 24th."

I was working earlier and I had to tell a customer of mine a total for something they order. The total, oddly enough was $19.63. I said it and immediately made a face (was on the phone.. I don't make weird faces at my customers ;)) and gave a little inaudible sigh.
Months and dates too yeah...I'm getting married in November...bet I'd be thinking about Ennis & Jack on my wedding day!!! (^)

This reminded me of another one. My daughter was two weeks old the first time I saw BBM and there are days when I look at her and see how much she has grown since then and I think to myself "Wow, it has really been that long since I first saw Brokeback?"
Congrats on getting married, btw! :cr)

That's a good one, dates. 1963, for sure. And November 7. And August: "Whatever happened to August?" or "the trade-off was August." And "I'll be coming through on the 24th."
kathy
My birthday is 7th November. I'll never be able to celebrate it again without thinking of the meeting between Jack and Ennis that never happened :\'( :\'(
-
And I have always loved the month of November...since I was a little girl, I always wanted to get married in November...don't know really why...guess because I love autumn and winter...the rain...darkness...the cold...mountains...snow........- everyone usually associates most of these things with sadness.... just like the story of Jack & Ennis :\'(
And when I heard Ennis say "Me and Alma r getting married in November"...I thought to myself "well, we have one thing in common then!!" (^)
-
I don't know if this borders on OT, but I'll say it then quit -- just more refining of the discussion on this particular symbol of BBM ("Leaning").
What was it that was said about Jake doing this? (My memory not perfect all the time, with all this stuff flying around fast and furious.) Someone, maybe Diana O., when they saw Jake do this, thought, "hmm...I don't know...maybe that's too Jake acting like this certain character"; but they quickly realized that this post/action is very Jack, just perfect Jack.
kathy
Jack almost always took the lead, and I do think that this pose (one of at least 3), introduced so early in the movie, already alerts us to his more "aggressive" role.

OOT: congratulations, brokie007. :)
Certain months, dates are indeed so memorable in BBM. We also have Alma's wedding date in June. :)

I notice that alot of c&W music lately speak to brokeback mountain scenes. Anyone else notice this?.....But the symbol I remember most is SNIT, Ennis, sitting on a log ,throws another log on the fire and proceeds to the tent. and when the kiss happens the fire is seen between them, bathing them in the light. This may represent the fire between them at that moment, but fire is silent ,hot, beautiful even but its also very dangerous. Also st the beginning sequence three telephone poles are shown as if they are crosses in a row. Another symbol?

Wow -- you have a little girl born in the Brokeback era. We are all clearly insane...but in a good way -- it is just funny, to look at your little girl and think about BBM.
And brokie007, you're getting married in November! Have you yet said to someone, "Me and ____'s gettin' married in November"? I'm sure you haven't -- but you can say it to us if you want.

That is wonderful, about the fire that is seen between them in SNIT, fire being an incredibly potent symbol, as you said.
I think the telephone poles were talked about early in this thread. I actually don't have a comment about these, crosses not my speciality :) I'll leave "religious" symbolism up to others.

Yes, insane in a good way! I just think back on it and how much I wanted to drive 8 hours to New York City to see the movie on it's December 9th release, but knew better because I was due to have the baby at any time. She was born merely 4 days later. The first time she had a babysitter was when we went to see the movie. So I strongly correlate her with the beginning of this wonderful BBM ride I've been going on.
I can probably relate ANYTHING to BBM, if I tried hard enough, though. Even my coffee cup. It has a picture of a coffee kettle that strongly resembles the one J&E used up on brokeback in '63. It makes me smile.

One of the symbols I think about but which does not appear in the movie is Jack's ashes, which do not end up scattered on BBM, as he wished, but split between
Texas and the family plot in Lightning flat. Just like Jack's life, split between Lureen and Childress, and Ennis and the mountains, and just what he's have expected for himself - in the ss he says that things never worked out for him as he wanted, and even in death his wishes aren't carried out.
And the ashes themselves of course symbolize the death of his hopes and dreams, and in a way the end for Ennis too.

That is funny, that you were crazy to see this movie before it came out, enough to drive to NYC with a baby due any minute. That is insane, like PRE-Brokeback Syndrome. I can see that having seen the movie once, one would be crazy to see it again, but this was even before you really knew of the impact it might have on you. But sorry, OT a bit. Except that your baby is a BBM symbol :)
I love also how I can make anything into a BBM symbol, like your coffee cup. And in addition to actual symbols, there is, like in BBM-speak thread, dialogue bits from the movie. Or, dressing or moving like Ennis or Jack, or Alma, Lureen, whoever...

I had been waiting awhile. The short story had already had a big impact on me from the beginning, so I was dying to see the movie. Had been since early '05. :) *o)
Okay, back to the topic at hand here. I've got another. I have a lot, actually. I went to the store a few weeks back and I was walking up through the parking lot there was a car parked out in front of the store with some Mexican music (I call it "fiesta tunes") blasting. I started laughing because all I could think of was Jack, and even though the mexico bits of BBM are upsetting, I just couldn't believe that even going to the store I couldn't get away from BBM :)

Well certainly, a lot of the songs that were used in BBM is now linked to the movie, as far as I'm concerned. I will not be able to listen to any of them without thinking of BBM.
The next time I enter a small town grocery store, I am sure that it will also call to mind that scene in BBM.
-
It's amazing. The things we do in simple every day life, work, shopping, music, our minds go back to this movie STILL. Now that's impact. This whole movie was a symbol. Just amazing.

Went to car wash yesterday. The store sells air refreshners. They were small cowboy hats - one in white and the other in black. Guess who I thought of.......
Now how I wish I can "smell" Jack and Ennis. How do they smell like? OK...it is way OT. Back to symbols.

And not OT at all - wea lll see the hats as symbolic of cowboys and of the two sheepherders who wear them while not cowboying!

Seeing cowboy hats anywhere will never be the same again.

While not cowboying, and also while not fishing! So there is another symbol -- fishing poles, those basket things, etc.
kathy
-
The interesting thing about the hats is that they evidently symbolize cowboys to people now, but also seem to have a symbolic function to the two characters in the movie. At the beginning it seems to me that they wear them to assert what they are, sheepherding being a somewhat despised ocupation, and then cling to them, in Ennis's case maybe because he stays in touch with stock rearing, and in Jack's as a sign of being a rodeo cowboy, although he isn't for long. The guy with Ennis in the road gang wears a baseball cap, which seems more appropriate.
But then when I used to see people in the South and West wearing cowboy hats although they clearly had nothing to do with their occupations, I came to the conclusion that it was a cultural thing or maybe a regional one.
-
At the risk of appearing *o) cowboy hats are an effiicient way to shade one's head from the sun, which is very important if you are in a place with lots of sun and little shade. Think about it.... sombrero, panama hat, cowboy hat, australian outback hat... they're all related.
Like any other piece of clothing, the functional often yields to the fashionable... Neckties used to be used to hold your shirt closed, back before buttons and snaps were readily available. Now, they are entirely a fashion thing.
Cowboy hats are largely fashion, but there's still a little protection from sun and drizzle relevant for sheepherders, highway workers, etc.
-
It's true I think that cowboy hats symbolizes a certain lifestyle. but can also be just a fahion statement. The brim acts as a visor from the sun in hot sunny climates and also as a sheild from rain { the umbrella effect. } Ennis also used his to hide his eyes at times when he was shy about something.

Smell is a powerful symbol. Although we couldn't smell something from the movie, there are certain scenes where we can almost imagine smells (thanks to the suggestion from the short story).

I like the way both Ennis and Jack seemed to had hid (at times) under the wide brims. I also think that Ennis and Jack treated the hats (and other cowboy parapharnalia) as potent symbols.
-
Know I'm offtopic but they hardly ever took their's off. That's O.K. though cause they both looked sexy as hell wearin em!
-
Not really OT as the hats were part of their identity and that's why they rarely took them off, I think, apart from practical considerations. If you look at stills or clips while they were shooting, they generally have them on there too - maybe as a way into the characters the clothes are important?
-
Are you saying that their clothing in general could be symbols? not just their hats? If so I agree, right down to Jack's rodeo buckle.
-
Well, the semiotics of clothes are interesting and of these particularly so, at least as far as showing what Ang Lee thought of the two characters and the impression he wanted them to create. Even how much they wesar is symbolic - from shirts to muffled up in coats to half-dressed to semi-nude, in Jack's case, and back to bundled up with Aguirre, then totally nude (presumably) in the motel when they're about as open to each other as anywhere in the movie.
-
Are you saying that their clothing in general could be symbols? not just their hats? If so I agree, right down to Jack's rodeo buckle.
The buckle. :)
It is a symbol of "Jack Twist", no?
-
It's a symbol of his success to Jack, and a symbol of what he'd like to be but never is. It's also a symbol of something that's dying - he says in the ss that amateur rodeo riders are being replaced by professionals, in other worlds that rodeo has moved away from its authenti beginnings and is becoming part of the world of entertainment and big bucks. Of course in marrying Lureen Jack moves away from the rodeo world and becomes part of the mechanized world of the C20th and alsoof course of big business and big bucks. The barman talks about LD's machines costing $100K and that was a lot of money for a combine harvester back in the 60s, I should think.

I have also thought that it references the rough road of his love for Ennis: twisting and trying to keep his seat for as long as he could.

In the ss, this is how Jack smells like:"...the intensely familiar odor of cigarettes, musky sweat and a faint sweetness like grass, and with it the rushing cold of the mountains."

This is so sad. I have an aunt who pass away recently and her ashes were also split in between two places. This reminds me of Jack's ashes, and Jack's ashes reminds me of my aunts. Thinking about either makes me want to cry. :\'(

This is kind of a symbol. I had a BBM "sighting" today. I live in San Diego, and was behind a big (new) GMC truck for a while driving home from work, staring at the Wyoming license plate, daydreaming about Ennis and Jack. Well, you know how in some states (not California) they put the car dealership's name right on the body of the car itself? This one was from Riverton, Wyo. I didn't notice that until I was about to turn off, so I didn't get the name of the dealership. Just seeing "Riverton, Wyo." tripped me out. So that's the symbol: Wyoming license plates, car dealership names in Riverton. :)

How about Elk ?

Don't let's think about the elk - he ended up being eaten!

I don't know. It's a little bit too unlike Jack. ;)
-
Yes, that's strange. I see Jack as a sort of life force but I don't envision him dancing in any sort of violently physical way - odd, because I always think of him as intensely physical.
Maybe that's an effect of the actor playing the part rather than the way the character is written, but I don't think so. I've just realizes that both Jack and Ennis end up dancing, both in the smae general sort of way and to the same general sort of music, Jack rather well, Ennis reluctantly and badly. Another symbolic representation of the diffeernce between them.

Maybe a little OT, but dancing is something that men of that era and those locales did proudly (and still do) -- in other words, dancing couldn't be said as being anything "sissy," but a fine, masculine thing to do. For what that's worth -- not really an issue here. Anyway, to me, it looks like Jack maybe learned the minimum of social dancing to get by, but he didn't look like a good, natural dancer in either scene, like some of the other men at that country club looked like. And I have no idea if Jake is a good dancer or not. But we know Heath is a dancer, so he had to play a bad or awkward dancer...which I love how he did. Reluctant or awkward notwithstanding, I love watching him "dance" with Cassie to Devil's Right Hand.

Yes, the dance scene with cassie was well done -- you certainly got the impression that Ennis was just going through the motions without really knowing how to dance properly.
Quite a number of interesting dance scenes in this movie. The most haunting ones are Jack's dance with Lureen, and Ennis dancing with Cassie with Alma Jr. looking on. You can't help feel that there is symbolism embedded in those two dance sequences.
-
Lureen is doing the female bit in the dancing scene - gazing up at a man and focusing on his mouth is meant to be a sure way to get him to kiss you!
In the first scene when he's "dancing" with Cassie, Ennis is holding a cigarette - yuk!
I reckon there's a deliberate contrast between the two - Jack can adapt, is socially more at ease, and can look convincing; Ennis isn't interested, lacks grace ( imagine saying to someone you've just danced with that you hope you won't have to again!) and doesn't fit into social situations.
More generally, Jack is flexible and creative, for want of a better word; Ennis is stuck in one mode and unable or unwilling to change.
-
In the first scene when he's "dancing" with Cassie, Ennis is holding a cigarette - yuk!
We all have our "buzz" things. Just remember, though, it was not "yuk" at the time. So many of these things, we're seeing through our 21st century eyes. We have to consider the mores of the times. Smoking was generally acceptable. We could say: yuk, Alma didn't use birth control. Yuk, she's staying home with the kids. Yuk, they're eating Spam. Yuk, they're using leaded gasoline. Yuk, they drink a lot.
I know we can't help but look at any movie through the filters of our current times, but as long as we realize we are doing so...

I would even suggest that perhaps smoking was the norm...
Speaking about these things brings to mind the sterotypical symbols of the "Marlboro" man -- a man who is self-sufficient, rugged, used ot hardships, and given to few simple (i.e., unsophisticated pleasures). Smoking, it would seem, is part of that image. Jack also smoked -- and both he and Ennis apparently enjoyed a joint or two in their later years...
-
I grew up with uncles who smoked; none of them would have dreamed of smoking while dancing. As far as the yuk factor is concerned, yuk they smoke and drink too much and yuk they'r eating Spam would have been as true of my and my family's reactions then as now. Unleaded gas wasn't available, so it wasn't a choice you could make then.Don't know about the birth-control thing but as far as yuk she's staying home with the kids is concerned, I certainly wouldn't say it at any time, including now - rather the opposite in fact.

Okay, well I guess there were different norms where and when you grew up than where and when I did.

That is true everywhere and in every time period. There are people out there who thinks this movie as yuk. :X
But everyone here agree that our Brokeback Mountain is yummy. I hope. ;)

BBM can be thought of as a symbol/allegory for Love itself. Whether people like BBM or not, I think the allegory was potent enough to make it hard for people to ignore...

certain sayings like "Tell ya what" "dumb ass" which are common but now have special meaning...

And I have no idea if Jake is a good dancer or not. But we know Heath is a dancer, so he had to play a bad or awkward dancer...which I love how he did. Reluctant or awkward notwithstanding, I love watching him "dance" with Cassie to Devil's Right Hand.
kathy
yeah...i love watching that scene too kathy......Heath is so damn hot "dancing" like that..... :d)

Yes! Our BBM words and phrases as "symbols." We're so funny, like little BBM radio receivers, fine-tuned to hearing "tell you what" or "truth is" or "dumbass," "it ain't right," all of it. Our antennae pick up the slightest little bit of potential BBM speak around us and play it through our minds... What a bunch of loonies. Lovable and creative and smart and sensitive loonies, loonies who will help with open arms...

Don't think Jake is an expert dancer - inone of the background things there's a section of him being taught how to do that dance he does with Lureen, which doesn't exactly look difficult.
Kathy, i agree with you. We've all spent so long watching the movie, reading the ss and above all talking on here that almost anything can set us off. There are so many symbols in the movie, and as tpe says the movie itself symbolizes many things to us, then the forum has a symbolic significance in our lives.Just the three letters, BBM, are enough to start up trains of associations and memories.

Right -- it's not only the symbols in the movie, but the movie itself in its entirety (and all the people involved in it), and the experience we've all had of the movie, the experience continued and built upon here, and learning what other people's experiences are.
I mean, even "Congratulations" is a loaded word now! Not to mention "thread" and "OT" and such.
As to Jake and dancing -- that's interesting. Thanks for that tidbit. I don't recall reading that, but I can see it. Not that I'm currently a great dancer, but I know a natural when I see one, and my mom was a dancer, etc. Not that it matters at all if Jake is a good dancer or not (we know he's a good kisser, and a good hugger), but I did notice that slight awkwardness in the dancing scenes of Jack. However, maybe he can hip-hop or whatever, modern dancing, but had to learn a proper waltz. I'm kind of surprised that wasn't something he learned in his talented family. Sorry, OT -- what thread am I in? Or yes -- symbols. Well, dancing is one of them, so I guess it's okay.

May I suggest that if this topic interests a number of you, do start a new thread on either "Heath as Dancer", or "Jake as Dancer", or both in their respective parts of the forum. By KD's admission, Jake is too much a home-body and doesn't seem to like partying out too much. THis is consistent with your observatons.

ok. Dancing and the dance are certainly great BBM symbols, to be sure.

At the end of Shakespeare's comedies, the newly-united couple often dance - supposedly as a sign of the restoration of harmony. But dancing doesn;t work like that in BBM, rather the opposite in fact.

In all cases we see it, I think, it's something the women want to do. The men would be totally fine without dancing.
kathy
-
Does this say then that women here, and perhpas in real life, are more interested in conforming with social norms and rituals than men? Neither Ennis nor Jack seem particularly interested in them, though Ennis seems more hostile than Jack, who can go through the motions but doesn't seem to be very involved. Or is this just a way of showing that the rest of the worls is unimportant to both of them , compared with the presence or absence of the other?

Yes, I think all that is true, regarding social norms. But probably, as to dancing, women just like to dance more than men -- it's kind of like foreplay, which, generally speaking, women like more than men? But then, for all those folks at the country club (is that what it would be called?) in Texas, for the men as well as the women, dancing is part of the whole lifestyle. And the men who dance well, it's a kind of status symbol.
If things had been different, in the 80's, and Ennis and Jack went to gay bars, maybe Jack might have convinced Ennis to dance with him... At least a slow dance -- that would have been nice.

I do think dancing was one form by which the movie sought to draw the characters into a socially acceptable setting. It did seem to imply conforming to societal norms as much as a form of entertainment and expression of intimacy.

I wonder if Ennis would ever have consented to dance openly with Jack. Dancing with Jack in a public setting would have been a strong statement as far as Ennis was concerned. It would have had great symbolic import.
-
How about the eyes watching over Jack and Ennis.
Ennis was always afraid that somebody might see them or that when he was walking down the street, people knew his secret.

<^( deifnitely.. there are things like this that I find myself doing and not even realizing it.
And going with quotes I was over my mother's house the other day and she honestly said "it smelled like cat piss" I said nothing and then she added "or worse". Yes, that phrase is, for me, now forever associated with BBM. :)

I've never quite worked out how the pup-tent got to smell of cats' piss - where had it been before it was up on the mountain? *o) sorry.

Cattist! LOL. I always wondered about that, too. Maybe "cat piss" was just a bad smell Jack was most familiar with. As to what actually gave the pup tent whatever smell it had...have to surmise about that...

That craggy peak of the mountain itslef could almost be a symbol of the obstacles dividing them - Jack at least thinks there's somewhere to go on the other side; Ennis never gets beyond the lower slopes.
-
The shirts in the closet by far to me is the symbol I love the most. They represent Jack's undying love Trough the years and years of pain and separation. Jack knew that all the pain they were going through to be together was worth it And the blood on them symbolized that the battle they were in was one of togetherness in the fight against the cruel world. Jack knew that whatever happened to them in their quest would be worth it in the end. I love him for it.
-
Wonderfully put, aintfoolin. The shirts seal their love.

Whenever I stargaze with my binocular, it reminded me of that scene in BBM. Sometimes I wish I see two special stars we called Jack and Ennis.
-
What a lovely idea, JT -- seeing Ennis and Jack stars through your binoculars. We'd rather it had been you gazing at them than Aguirre!
Off-topic: So, a stargazer...how lovely. You must live where you can see them, unlike some people, such as me.

-
There are symbols everywhere in this film. My current favs are the 3 pictures of the mountain which are shown in scenes, paced through the film, each bigger then the last: brokeback looming larger and larger for both men.
And the Cowboy hats. Black/White. battered. The bands, E.'s completely twisted, JT's more and more twisted as time goes on and it all starts to kill him. How the hats themselves are used as symbols, how the hats themselves are used to hide.
But I think my all-time favorite is after FNIT, Ennis readying his mount with that pommel looming large. The rifle, how he holds it and then holsters it, effectively surrendering..... Being from New York, I remember thinking--and still do, every time I see him do it--- that it was just SOOOO SWEEET of Ennis not to blow Jack's head off after humping him in the tent. I mean it was just...sweet. It really moved me.
-
Brokeback_1, I like your symbols, and observations. As to the mountains, seeing them as looming larger as the story goes on. I wouldn't have noticed that. Nor did I observe the hat bands themselves.
Then...you think it's "sweet" that Ennis doesn't blow Jack's head off? I need an emoticon or something, can't tell how you mean that, and what being from New York has to do with it. Am I being dense or what? I do know what you mean about the pommel and cocking the gun and all, that next morning, though, that symbology.

My heart would melt for them instead of wincing. I would hire them year ofter year to herd my sheeps and even provide them with living quarters during the off-seasons. <^(
OT: Actually, I live in Henderson, a suburb of Las Vegas. So nothing but the brightest stars can be seen, binoculars are often needed. I stargaze often when I go camping in dark areas. Oops, another association to BBM.

NO, JT. You are not weird. Whether because of BBM or for the aesthetic pleasure of eating -- I don't find it strange. :)

Thanks, Thomas for not thinking I'm weird. It would be beacuse of BBM that I tear up. I usually have a big smile when eating lol.

I never saw the poin t of those blue and black speckled enmel things they had up on the mopuntain when I saw them in souvenir shops in the US, but now I think of them with affection because they reond me of Ennis falling over the coffee pot and doing the washing up in the river.
-
Actually, they're not souvenirs per se, the speckled enamel pots. Maybe they're a bit old fashioned, but you can still find them -- I have a few in use in my kitchen. I love them also for camping. But anyway, yes, I love all their camping gear...and love the scene of Ennis washing up the dishes in the river.
kathy

We have those enamel pots and mugs, and they are blue ones too!!!

Another thing that reminded me of BBM, especially Jack, is a can opener. I recently saw a commercial about this new bettery can opener that you put on top of the can and it suppose to open the can. Then you see these annoying people trying to use the old fashion can opener and starts to fumble it and drop the cans. It makes our Jack look graceful opening that can. It's like whenever they have a new invention, everything that was used for decades all of a sudden become useless. Dumb commercial, but I can't help but think about Jack opening that can, and that makes me want to laugh.

Yes, with all the greenery in BBM, it is hard not to relate it with the film and story. I think the color of BBM is green... So let up add green to the list of associations, if it has not already been mentioned...
-
Green, yes, and blue, also. Lots of blue -- sky, water, and denim! Oh yes, and Jack Twist's eyes. Might as well add "beige" or "tan" -- Ennis's jackets, well-worn tents, dusty towns...
kathy

Dusty towns and weathered buildings. Verdant slopes and snowy peaks. The blue blue heavens. The cold cold dark dark earth.
-
Rain and hail and snow.

Earth, Fire, and Rain (i.e., the Mountain, their Love, and their Tears).
-
And ycould add the fourth element - earth, fire, water .... and the air of the mountain, cold, clear and often a rushing wind, which Ennis recalled whn he held the shirts in Jack's room.

This is a new one for me, but I can now associate this with Jack meeting Randall.

Any time i hear someone say "huh" i automatically think of Ennis. My favorite connection between BBM and my real life is that elk that they shot. Whenever elks come into the conversation i think of bbm. I even named the elk Stan just so it wouldn't be so weird, even though i guess to other people naming it might be a little weird. ^*()

Yeah that and the fact Jack mentioned about a lightning killing 42 sheeps I think.
-

Excellent. That part momentarily slipped off my mind... :)
-
OT but I wonder how one lightning strike could kill 42 sheep? Or were there 42 strikes? And what a weirdly precise figure.

Maybe he was just trying to impress the new boy with his mathematical prowess and big words (asphyxiate).

I was quite surprised when he used that word.
Something about mention of lit in that scene, along with its appearance in the one showing Jack sleeping, as well as in the hailstorm scene, do seem to connect lightning with all this. It's almost a symbol no? What does it mean? The fickleness of fortune/fate? The ever-present threat that loomed over them even in the Mountain?
-
The unpredictablility and incontrollability of the forces of nature?
Lightning strikes are often used as metaphors for the effect of suddenly falling in love - in French the "coup de foudre".
And then Jack comes from Lightning Flat, a name I don't entirely understand.

Yes! Not only lightning, a force of nature, but Lightning Flat -- fascinating. And it is an odd name, isn't it? Lightning doesn't go with Flat...and it would more commonly be Flats I think.
LF is on the border of Montana. Ennis is from Sage, on the border of Idaho. They came together in the middle.
kathy
-
Diametrically opposed in geographical origin as they are in character and destiny?
-
Yes, lightning does seem to figure in the scenes ans well as place names. It is not so uncommon in the Midwest, where great thunderstorms form in the Great plains. But it is also very symbolic.
-
I think the lightning imagery is mostly associated with Jack: he was there the previous summer when the lightning struck; he's from Lightning Flat. (May be a stretch, but the word "flat" also can indicate speed--"He ran the distance in 30 seconds flat.")
This all perhaps recalls Proulx's description of Jack as having a "quicksilver" quality to him.
Lightning and "quicksilver" (mercury): changing, shiny, unpredictable, always moving...
-
Edgar, that is great! Jack...quicksilver...lightning. And flat. Excellent.
kathy
-
Mirrors-I know this must have been pointed out before. Jack was staring in the mirror while he was shaving when they were waiting for Aguirre to arrive, what was he thinking then? And the summer ended. Jack was driving away from Ennis, he looked in his rear view mirror, looking at Ennis from a distance. No question about what he was thinking then.
-
Poetically, mirrors have always meant the thing reflected in the mirror is just a shadow-image of the real thing. I think this applies to Ennis in the mirror of Jack's truck when Jack pulls away to leave BBM. Ennis, as viewed in the mirror, is losing his substance to Jack. Ennis is becoming more and more unreal as his image recedes in the mirror until he will have disappeared completely. That's when the real heartbreak sets in. We don't see Jack break down, as Ennis does, but we can imagine how difficult it was for Jack to see Ennis fade away -- maybe never to be seen again.

Every time I think of kicking Ennis to the curb, I read posts like yours. When Ennis breaks down, I have to remember, that this man alway had a depth of feeling that is so easily missed. You see how cruel he could be by the way he treats Jack. But then you have to understand, that he did indeed love him, more than he himself realized, and Jack took more of Ennis with him then he understood.
-
Even turkey makes me think of BBM, peanuts too.
What the movie shows is just many of our daily lives. There is no way to escape the movie and I don't want to escape.
-

I agree, kathy. Thanks, Edgar!

manhattangirl's comment on mirrors gets me going.
There is a great tradition in Buddhist thought about "The Great Mirror". I would not be surprised if Ang Lee echoes this thought throughout BBM. But Jack is indeed susceptible to this image. The world of passions and illusions...
The other tradition in Buddhist thought is related to the notion of mirror: "The Floating Bridge of Dreams". In the ss, we see this aspect in Ennis.

a lasso a cowboy hat and my most denim jackets with plad shirts lol

omg yes i cant beleive i forgot sheep there are lots of sheep near my city i live on the outskirts so in about 5 minutes i can see them i sometimes go to watch them for this reason its became quite a frequent thing for me :)
-
Rodeos, cowboy hats in general , and country music songs about lost love and lonliness, whiskey, tents and campfires.
-
Vintage pajamas... Country dances...

some intresting ones posted that i wouldnt think to rite down even though they do remind me of BBM

Country music and cowboys simbols in general,of course. (https://ennisjack.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fbrokebackmountain.forums1.net%2Fusers%2F60%2F74%2F28%2Fsmiles%2F104862.gif&hash=4e7cefbda302a0f47fa7e8925db3c2718b9177af)
But also beans¡-even if I don't like them...-.And even more afther Heath's death, any love song or this kind of music that reminds you some open spaces, mostly in nature-don´t this happen to you sometimes?-.(https://ennisjack.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fbrokebackmountain.forums1.net%2Fusers%2F60%2F74%2F28%2Fsmiles%2F619776.gif&hash=88fc2b264bdae672ef49a7633ba803d34f865742)
And several words and expressions that forever will be associated with BBM memories and that I sometimes use in my daily life-even if in this case I speak in Spanish or Catalan-.
-
oh words that reminds me some people in my classes todaywere having a conversation im not sure what about nothing special though then as one of them walked away from the others they said "i swear..." i dont know what context it was in but it really got me thinkng :\'(
-
A lasso, a black resistol, an old dirty pickup, cold high mountains, the sound of some bad harmonica, the lonely chord of a guitar, leather gloves, whiskey bottles, some quiet river, a warm night fire, puppy dogs, dusty long roads, plaid shirts, wet field of yellow flowers, brilliant blue eyes, mumbled words, just EVERYTHING.
And just everyday all "the leaning". That opening scene with Jack leaning against his truck just stole my heart. And I knew in that moment that my life will never be the same again.

That is¡Words or expressions that we could consider "Brokebackisms" in daily life:f.e.,finishing my questions with a "huh?".More specifically-and comically...-,when something is going well or I have a good news,I'm getting used to shout "Yeee haaaawww¡".Yes,it's true, and I'm already so used to it that the problem arrives if a client in my job makes us a command or a supplier carries everything well to us,or stuff...I can't shout like that in these cases¡or they will think I'm a little :i

cowboy hats and sheep remind me of BBM :c)

That is Words or expressions that we could consider "Brokebackisms" in daily life:. . . .
You Bet.
This phrase used a lot here in the mid-west, but I'll always think of Ennis and his eager reunion with Jack.
-
Sheep...whenever I see them alive or in another form,my instant thought...BBM
I made my mom buy a Beanie Baby sheep at the bookstore the other day and I was gunna name is Ennis but my mom says it's a girl sheep so I named her "Emma"...next toy I'm gettin' is Ennis!! ::)
Other things that remind me? The words "huh", if two guys hug each other from the back (I saw two brothers do it in a movie today...I looked at my friend and she's like "What"...I felt stupid xD)..Sheep, cowboy hats..and i'm sure a LOT more ;D
-
Tire irons. I will always associate them with people of spite and malice, who are certain they have a right to be judgmental, self-righteous,
and careful not to get caught.
-
cowboy hats, shirts like the two shirts, cherry cake, beans, apple pie, trailer, mountains, hawks circling, hawks calling, blue colliers, Elks, rodeos, Alberta, Wyoming

oh yer tents and rodeo buckles not things i see often but in anycase when i do i most certainly think of this film :)
-
And I don't think we rarely see people putting clothes in paper bags, no? It seemed to have been a typical practice for Ennis, on account of his poverty, I suppose?
-

yer, even if he had the money for a real bag for his clothes he'd probably come out with something about not wanting to waste money when a papebag was perfectly fine he was so stubborn :). oh god im feeling sad now. i get nostalgic when talking about the character mannerisms lol
-
That is true, he was simple to the extreme. Alma Jr. certainly voiced this in the last scene...
This leads me to another symbol: sparsely furnished trailers...
-
Pup tents, rodeo belt buckles, paper bags used to carry clothes...
Yes, I especially like the paper bags, and later the feed sack thing.

I don't seem to recall how Jack packed up his clothes during any part of the film. I think he varried his clothes in the BBM scenes a bit more than Ennis, no?
For jack of course, one can associate him with the various trucks he used over the years...
-
Yes. :)

Now that you and MPJ mention it, drinking plays a huge role in Jack's and Ennis's social relaxation, no?
Let's see, the two drinks we see are whiskey and beer, no? We see some wine in the end. But overall, it was whiskey and beer...

Jack's old GM truck is certainly a wonderful symbol of BBM for me.
Do you know that as of last year, you could hire to for a tour of the BBM sites in Alberta, Canada?

For some reason, I think of two jackets that are forever associated in my mind with Jack:
1. The blue parka.
2. The green BBM jacket.
I would love to know where to get the latter...

All these things remind me of the film BBM. There's many more.

Yesterday my little girl was watching Spongebob Squarepants...Spongebob was riding a horse and yelled YEE-HAW...i was in the kitchen cooking and i heard the YEE-HAW ....My heart began to race with 200 miles per hour.
I immediately thought of Jack and Ennis ...so i guess a sentence or particular words reminds of the film.
And everytime i hear a sad song i think of the two boy's and the lost love.

You never know zankou.
Go to one of the BBM gatherings when you can ([perhaps unlikely right now) and you shall.
After all, these PJs, shirts, jackets, and other relics only hold meaning for those of us who love this film. It would be incomprehensible to others.

To tell you the truth, anything that has to do with horses, cowboy hats, country landscapes, trucks, etc. makes me think of Brokeback Mountain. And I'm from Texas, so I see those things almost every day. ;D
-
;D I'm glad i don't see these things every day, i'd become crazy for sure ;)
Here in Holland we don't have cowboy hats, country landscapes, trucks..well oke, we do have trucks, but not the trucks as in the movie.
But to tell you the truth sometimes i wish i lived in your environment, to become one with it,
to breathe the air, to get a little taste of the movie...here we have nothing... you know what i mean?
I just discovered where i want to put money away for ...a trip to the "Brokeback Mountains"
See you in 10 years ;)

Oh yeah I forgot to mention rodeos. We have the rodeo here every year for over two weeks and it's a huge event. So Brokeback Mountain can never really leave my mind...I'm surrounded by constant reminders. And what I really love about Texas, is that although most people live in the city, it's still surrounded by open spaces. You don't have to go very far to see country landscapes. Where I live, you just drive for about five or ten minutes and you find yourself in the open country. It's really beautiful, especially on a clear sunny day. And right by the high school I went to are these old ranch-type houses with horses behind the fences. Also there's a farm with cows near by too...ah, so many things that make me think of BBM that I see every day. Although I don't want to spend my whole life here in Texas, I want to go to other places and see the world...I'm quite proud to be a Texan. People sometimes make fun of Texans because they say we're too proud of our state, like its it's own country or something. :P

I was going to say that, Thomas -- your beautiful black suede western-style jacket, yes, quite similar to Jack's. I saw a close-up of his recently in some pic and it definitely has the same cut.
To get back on topic: how about funky, messy apartments.

Beautiful -- if you allow me to say so, it mirrors the byways of the Heart.

Beautiful too,Thomas¡

It is beautifully said Tpe, thank you.
What about everytime we see pictures of Heath Ledger or Jake G.? Heath WAS and will always symbolize Ennis Del Mar. Jake will always symbolize Jack Twist. This maybe unfair to actors who take roles and move on but these characters and the actors who played them will always be remembered for this classic film.
Brokeback definitly got us all good.
-
You are so right...THE symbols of Brokeback are Jake and Heath !!
-
Today I saw a painting of the rolling hill of ranch country, with a fence running along, almost like the banner, without the sheep and Ennis and Jack.
Yet, right the way I FELT Brokeback Mountain. It took a double take to realize what I felt, and why. The green rolling hills and far horizon and the expansive sky, blue with white cumulus clouds.

That sounds beautiful. I'm glad I live in a place where I am near such scenes.

some words symbolise BBM for me like the simple word "ranch" can make my memories all come back :) which is a nuiscene because im trying to read of mice and men where they work on a ranch and everytime i think of the setting i just forget the book and drift of into the world of BBM :P

Oh God, this is certainly true. Our actors have indeed become symbols of what is great and lovely about this film.

Indeed, being in red rock country around Las Vegas last month, we all did seem to get the feeling of being in BBM, even though the geography and flora and fauna are vastly different...

I was driving home today on the highway, when "The Cowboy Song" by Thin Lizzy came on the radio. I turned it up real loud, and had this grin on my face thinking about BBM. :)

I have the same feeling listening to Garth Brooks sing the Cowboy song. Here is the lyrics:
Pushin horns weren't easy like the movie said it was
And I don't recall no dance hall girls
Or hotel rooms with rugs
You worked hot and tired and nasty
Rode your pony's head too low
There were all the nights you couldn't sleep
'Cause it was too damn cold
And you'd sing "Strawberry Roan" and "Little Joe"
Like the time we hit the river
And the rains began to fall
And the water was risin' so damn fast
We thought it'd drown us all
We lost a lot of steers that day
And four to five good mounts
But when all the boys rode into camp
We knew that's what counts
And we sang, yippie ti yi yay and "Amazing Grace"
Or the night they broke behind us
And then took us by surprise
I whistled out to Bonner, I seen the terror in his eyes
And he rode for all his horse would ride
And I know he done his best
But he crossed over Jordan ridin' Dunny to his death
And we sang "Bringing in the Sheaves" and "The Rugged Cross"
So when you see the cowboy, he's not ragged by his choice
He never meant to bow them legs
Or put that gravel in his voice
He's just chasin' what he really loves
And what's burnin' in his soul
Wishin' to God that he'd benn born a hundred years ago
Still singin' "Strawberry Roan" and "Little Joe"

Thanks so much for sharing this, athena and lance. I do think of BBM when I read/hear so many poems/songs -- even those that may have been written/composed with a totally different context in mind...

Here's Thin Lizzy's Cowboy Song:
"I am just a cowboy lonesome on the trail
A starry night, a campfire light
The coyote call, the howling winds wail
So I ride out to the old sundown
I am just a cowboy lonesome on the trail
Lord, I'm just thinking about a certain female
The nights we spent together riding on the range
Looking back it seems so strange
Roll me over and turn me around
Let me keep spinning till I hit the ground
Roll me over and let me go
Riding in the rodeo
I was took in Texas I did not know her name
Lord, all these southern girls seem the same
Down below the border in a town in Mexico
I got my job busting broncs for the rodeo
Roll me over and turn me around
Let me keep spinning till I hit the ground
Roll me over and let me go
Running free with the buffalo
Roll me over, and I'll turn around
And I'll move my fingers, up and down
Up and down
It's okay amigo, just let me go
Ridin' here in the rodeo
Roll me over and turn me around
Let me keep spinnin' till I hit the ground
Roll me over and let me go
Ridin' here in the rodeo
Roll me over and set me free
A cowboy's life is the life for me."
-
Here's Thin Lizzy's Cowboy Song:
Roll me over and turn me around
Let me keep spinning till I hit the ground
Roll me over and let me go
Riding in the rodeo
This one in particular, I find VERY apt. :)

:c) Anytime I ride horseback in the beautiful countryside. I always think "Jack would be proud of me riding this crazy mare." Wishing I had the $$ to go to the Rodeos when they come around, and wishing that my daughter would go with me.

;D I wish I am so lucky. There are not many cowboy hats in Vancouver. But funny enough, I only react to the straw cowboy hats, like the one Ennis wore. Or, the worn cowboy boots, not the fancy ones, but the plain working ones with worn heel, and roughed up leather. And of course, like everyone else, the plaid shirts. I've always been fond of country western, but since Brokenback Mountain, the thin stripped plaid shirt that Ennis wore, the one of the two shirts, always stir me up a little. And again, funny enough, the blue denim shirts do nothing for me, or nothing more than any other country western shirt.

;D You and zankou wins hand down. I surrender. I love Ennis, but you two are fanatical about Jack and Jake, respectively. Actually, I am also starting to love Heath, but I may be behind Tony in that there, not to mention half a dozen others. Yes, my love is small by comparison, but it burns so brightly, and I hope forever. <^(

Campfires! There was a science prog on TV a few weeks back; at one point some silly female astronomer was supposedly camping in the Atacama Desert. Evidently it had all been set up for her but whoever had created the campsite had put a fire in the middle - there was a long shot of the site in the near-dark, with the fire the only thing really visible - took me right back to bBM.
-
There are at least two wonderful campfire scenes in the movie, no? :)

Yeah, almost every time I go to the gas station, there's guys wearing plaid shirts, boots, and cowboy hats.

Hey, Andrew, your love for Ennis and Heath is strong, deep and passionate, and it's beauty sometimes is overwhelming. Believe me, not small, just huge like your heart is. I can feel your love, friend. Once I said that Keren made me love Heath, and in that very post I said that you made me love Ennis. :^^) :ghug:
I know, OT!! SORRY, but Andrew is my friend and I had to tell this. ^f^ ^f^

I'm think I'll take a drive through the Hill Country this weekend. So I can feel like I'm living in Brokeback. ;D
It's been cloudy and rainy here the past week, but they say we should get some nice sunny weather soon. So it will be perfect. Except for the fact that I won't have my own "Jack Twist" by my side :P...but oh well.
-
It would be even more reminiscent if you rode a horse through the Hill Country, no? :)

hmm cowboy hats arent common here although i did see someone walking down the street in one with his wife he looked oddly out of place but i thought oh a cow boy hat and that reminded me of BBM.

This isn't exactly "symbols," but I watched Ang Lee's "Lust, Caution" recently on DVD, and the whole beginning, with Focus Features, and River Road Entertainment, etc., the visuals and the music, I COMPLETELY relate to BBM. Maybe I've not watched another Focus Features/River Road movie since BBM, until this one...and it reawlly threw me, the opening credits thing. I was transported to each and every time I watched BBM.

I understand you so well!! It hapens to me all the time. When I was at the cinema and the film ( L,C) started with Focus Features I got goosebumps.....I only could thing about BBM. It sends a shiver down my spine every time I see that.

I agree with you and Tammy. I always associate BBM with Focus and River Road now. I think we've seen it so many times while watching BBM that the associations are now "automatic".

Yeah, Thomas, and everytime I saw that Focus and River Road in the BBM beginning I started to tremble, with a horrible lump in my throat, almost crying, but not with total sadness but with a intense emotion, knowing what was waiting for me ahead. First time we see the film it's like a punch because you don't expect the ending, but I think it's worse when you know about the ending, because then you see every scene with different eyes, thinking how they wasted their time, a whole life being apart from each other, without knowing what was the end. And even the most beautiful scenes seems sad or at least bittersweet when you know what the fate was. Then when you see the beauty of the most tender scenes you think about that same beauty all lost at the end....
My third, fourth, fifth time at cinema when I saw that Focus Features I felt so nervous, heart racing.....I knew that it was gonna hurt but even knowing I was so impatient, I was unable to leave, I wanted to see that beginning over and over again, that truck almost invisible, the soft dawn, and then the guitar.....Oh yes, Focus and River Road will be BBM forever.

Tammy, this reminds me of my late friend Robert, who shed a tear at the mere sound of the opening notes of the BBM theme.
Would not certain trypes of slow lyrical guitar music stand as a symbol for BBM?

Oh Thomas, did you see Babel? Great film. Well Gustavo was there too. He was the author of the soundtrack. His guitar sounded so similar to BBM; in fact a friend of mine said "this is Gustavo" only by hearing that guitar (he didn't know that the Soundtrack's author was Gustavo). Well, I have to see the film twice because the first view I was unable to concentrate and see what I had in front of me....Everytime that guitar played I only could think about and see (above all in the Texas/Mexico scenes) images from BBM.....I was nervous the whole time, with a lump in my throat, and goosebumps......
Watching BBM is like branding burning hot: every thing you see, every song you hear, a lot of words you hear and say every day, all remind us of BBM. I entered that cinema being a mediocre girl and left being my true self. BBM changed our lives, so how can not see BBM everywhere? That's impossible.
-

Yes, I know. And I believe he was again nominated for Babel (but ZI forgot if he again won -- he may have won...)
Yes, all the songs played in BBM, especially the ones not written explicitly for the film, are now strongly associated with the story -- at least for me. :)

For me too,Thomas; it's curious how music can be forever related with feelings, and making us change our state of mind with only few notes...There´re several songs that remind me of BBM,even if they don't appear in the movie nor,in principle, have nothing in common with it.They only need to be love songs,or kind of epic music that make me think in great open spaces, tenderness and,even,tragedy...But I think it's not that I'm crazy-I suppose so...-, but that,as Tammy said very well,BBM is present everywhere in our lives, sensations and feelings because it has changed them somehow.
-

This is true, as I sometimes come across songs where the lyrics remind me explicitly of BBM. Initially, it is the words that trigger the connection. But later, the mere melody takes hold of you and becomes in and of itself a reminder of BBM.
Strange but wonderful is human perception.

HARMONICA ;D
I remembered Jack today, when I was playing a harmonica... And i remembered Ennis's smiling face, when he has contented expression, and is sending up a prayer of thanks for Jack forgetting to bring his Harmonica.

Oh yes the harmonica...
I just watched this....
I kinda like harmonica music since BBM ;)

Jack wasn't that great with a can-opener -- at least when we have a partially dressed or naked Ennis in front of him.
Yes, I do think someone else mentioned the harmonica -- and it reminded me that I could have gotten the original BBM harmonica had I known about the auction sooner...

And who bought that harmonica?
I forgot now. I should have preserved the link. The harmonica was auctioned at ebay by Ken Wills, who was property manager of the film.
The guy who got it payed relatively little, IMO. He has a treasure that I shall always covet.

The reunion kiss has become that iconic kiss -- symbolic for so many of us out there who have somehow felt the same way at one point in our lives...

I havent heard any of his other work i dont think. I do love what he did for BBM tho, im always listening to the single The Wings that was released i think in america?? ^*() (someone help me on this one i got it off amazon) It is BBM remixes of The Wings mixed by different people but using the music Gustavo composed for the film. The cd case as a black and white pic of Ennis and Jack on, backs to camera on hill. Even though the mix lol wasnt in film the tune was and makes me think of BBM :)

My brother's daughter recently went camping with some friends to celebrate graduation and they had a flat. She called me to ask how to change a tire (out of five of them, they weren't sure how to work the jack!). Anyway she told me when she got home that one of her friends waved the jack handle around pretending it was a light saber and she had a sudden flash of Jack laying on the ground covered with blood. She said she would never look at changing a tire the same way after watching the movie. Sad but true.

I know that scene bothered her a great deal (obviously), but the fact that she saw Jack killed because of who he was just unnerved her. She really loves the movie and is always commenting on things that remind her of either Ennis or Jack.
As for me, across town there is a small older trailer someone lives in and every so often there is a Ford truck about the same year as the one Jack drove during the reunion (different color). I always smile and think to myself that Jack is in town visiting Ennis.
I might just snap a pic of it and post it here.

I have a beautiful view of the mountains outside of my dining room windows. Now every day when I look at them I think about Ennis, Jack and "their" mountain.

I drove by there this morning and the truck was there! I meant the trailer is a different color but the truck is actually red and white!

Two men in a movie.
I didn't realize this until watching all these gay-themed movies, then it dawned on me.
Every movie with two men in love reminds me of Ennis and Jack.

really? i suppose on some level it does, if someone was too say the word gay couple, ennis and jack would be my first thought, but seeing for example shaun and zach from shelter doesnt really remind me of ennis and jack, well sometimes i compare etc. so i suppose on some level it does make me think of them... i guess what i mean is not every gay couple reminds me of ennis and jack.

Yeah, I know I am Ennis-obsessed. ::) But I was thinking Shaun was like Jack, and Zach was like Ennis, and how Heath would be great playing Shaun, and then how he would be great playing Zach because he can skateboard...

I wonder if anyone else is as obsessed with Ennis as I am, and as obsessed with Jake as you are.
Come to think of it, I think we all are in this forum, in some form or another.
That's why we all belong here, and call this place home. <^(

Wow.
I think everyone here can understand this association instantly. I certainly don't look at trailers the same way, after the movie.

Hey lance, we actually think the same here. As I mentioned in the other thread that I watched the new "Brideshead Revisited" this weekend, and couldn't help asking myslef how the film interpretation of the story has changed in a post-BBM world.

Hmmm, very interesting, Matt. I must admit though that I see Zach and Saun as a reaction to Ennis and Jack -- as a kind of anti- Ennis and Jack, if you know what I mean...

Everytime I ride my horse in the Mts.-even though I ride English. (When my horse goes crazy, I think "Jack would be proud of me for staying on"); Cowboy hats and Cowboy boots, even though not a lot of people wear them around here. I'm a Jack lover, and I LOVE the denim shirts and the black hats! Once-in-a while, I'll see 2 men with Cowboy hats on and automatically think of E & J. I'm always wishing I had a horse trailer so I could spend the night in the National Forest in a tent with a campfire. We have local Rodeos too, and I really want to go to one sometime.

I am curious to see this, how different it is made than the 70's (?) BBC/PBS version.

atalley, how wonderful that you can go horse-riding in the mountains!
You know, everytuime I see a black hat, I always think of Jack, and whenever I see a light-colored one, I think of Ennis. THis being summer, I recall Ennis's straw hat whenever I see summer hats in the city.

Nice, I like the lone cowboy; it reminds me of Ennis riding through the flock of sheep, looking for the coyote. The shuttle and the stars are great, too. I can just imagine the big Texan sky, out in the desert, with all 'em stars, and Ennis thanking the heavens.
For you Jake fans, the blue is like Jake's eyes.... :c) ^f^ Thanks, Athena.

There I finally fixed the pic by posting it directly. :P
Yup, I always think of Ennis when I see it (which is pretty much all the time because it's the standard state license plate that all cars reginstered here in Texas have). I don't think I go anywhere anymore without thinking of Jack and Ennis, or something about Brokeback Mountain. Sometimes just the way the clouds are makes me think of it. And of course, I'm proud to have those license plates on my car. :c)

And the thing about Texas is that there are so many wide open spaces. Texas is a huge state, but with only a population of about 20 million. So the population density is very low, and even if you don't live in a rural area, you still see lots of open spaces and ranches and fields and such. Right by the mall over here for example, there's a ranch with cows and so it's hard not to think about Brokeback every day here.
-
Texas...the first thing that comes to my mind is "you ought to move down to Texas.......," said Jack. "Texas?......." ;D Sorry can't help. The open space definitely is one symbol - the landscape so effectively used in BBM.
I collect license plates and have got many of them. Haven't seen this one. The space shuttle looks odd though with the landscape.

Oh I love the open spaces, it's really nice and makes for a more scenic drive to work and school. The low population density definitely gives Texas a nice feel, I live in a suburban area but I still get that Brokeback feel. Yeah I've always thought the space shuttle looks very odd and kind of ruins it. It's supposed to represent the NASA program in Houston, but they should have just left it off. It just doesn't match the rest of the theme. This has been the official plate since 2000, the one previous to this one was so plain. It had no background picture, just white and the words Texas and The Lone Star State and the little outline of the shape of Texas. I really like this cowboy one, but sadly, they're coming out with a new one in 2016, with the Davis Mountain Range in the background. Let's see, what else is Brokeback here...well the rodeo takes place for two weeks every February, and we have a mall here with two gigantic cowboy boots in the front, and I see guys with cowboy hats at the grocery store or gas station sometimes, the symbols are everywhere here. :c)
-
Glad to know that I am not the only one feeling the odd combination of space shuttle. Yeah that is what I thought it represented.

Yeah that is the only I remember. Every time I pass through DFW airport, I am always drawn to those cowboy merchandises. I am now impartial to all the western stuff. That is probably a silly way of me trying to get close to the minds of Ennis and Jack......which I don't think I never will to come close.
-
Although Texas is indeed one of the most populous states in the US, it is indeed a huge state where the amount of wide open spaces avaialble always astonishes me. Yes, I do tend associate wide open spaces with certain scenes in BBM.
Still, it is instructive to make a comparison between the average population densities of the various states. Noting that the population in Texas is heavily centered in the urban areas, we still get a n average population density of 79.6 per square mile. Wyoming's population density is amazingly small by comparison: 5.4 per square mile! Compare both numbers with California's, which is 234.4 per square mile. New Jersey has a population density of 1,170.64 per square mile! 2 orders of magnitude larger than Wyoming!
-
Yeah, I know that Texas has a higher population density around the cities, but it is a huge state, so for such a large amount of land, 24 million people aren't that many. You don't have to drive far at all to see wide open spaces, even if you live in an urban area. Everything is very spaced out, not compact like in states that have less land. That population density in New Jersey, for example seems crazy! And I'd like to go to Wyoming or Montana some day, the pictures of the landscapes seem really nice. But Ennis should have listened to Jack and gone to Texas! He would have liked it, I bet. ;)
-
24 million is certainly very small for such a huge state!
And yes -- perhaps if Ennis had gone to Texas, things would have turned out differently for Jack. :\'(

There's not even one little thing mentioned in BbM, that I don't mark in my everyday life... from the coffee pot, to paper bag... The big ones, I odn't count, they can't be erased never again from my mind. The name of places - Riverton, Wyoming, Texas, Mexico.... just about everything.
On the top of it, I finally got the courage and put BBM theme as a calling music on my cell phone. It took me a year to be able to do this, but now, when I hear the music, it is not hurtful any more, it is soothing, loving, something familiar and absolutely mine... When my call rings, I feel like having a call from home... }s{
-
The music -- especially the non-coal guitar music -- is quite a potent symbol for the story itself. I really feel that in certain scenes, the music is the aural equivalent of what is happening -- as if the music is a commentator that adds depth to what we see.
Symbols are not always visual.

You're right,Loreen,in that every little thing, even the most common ones, that have a relation with BBM,has got another very different symbolism in our lives.Objects and places we have seen or heard about during all our lives, now are kind of "more ours",because they are in our movie. And the music,,well,as you say Thomas,is a good remark of what we are watching in images;music,at least in my own case, has always been a powerful way of awakening emotions and of remarking the ones someone exposes before us.In BBM case,I agree in that it's a symbolism for itself,as there are some symbols that belong to the hear,or to the taste, not only to the view.
-

The funny thing is that the music now conjures up precise scenes and images in my head. The score itself is enough to suggest the whole movie and entire themes. It's that powerful.
