from The Los Angeles Times:

For Heath Ledger, a bittersweet salute
'The Dark Knight' earns the actor, who died last year, a posthumous Oscar for his malevolent turn as the Joker.
By Reed Johnson
February 23, 2009

Accompanied by a standing ovation and a reverent silence, Heath Ledger's family accepted the supporting actor statuette.

The 28-year-old Australian actor, who died after being found unconscious last January in his New York apartment, was posthumously honored for his toxic performance as the gleefully malicious Joker in the Batman saga "The Dark Knight."

"Menacing, mercurial, droll and diabolical," co-presenter Kevin Kline summarized as he listed Ledger, felled by an accidental overdose of prescription drugs, among the supporting actor nominees.

The actor's father, Kim Ledger; mother, Sally Bell; and sister Kate Ledger jointly accepted the award. "This award tonight would have humbly validated Heath's quiet determination to be truly accepted by you all here, his peers, within an industry he so loved," Kim Ledger said.

Kate Ledger said the family was accepting the award on behalf of "beautiful Matilda," her brother's 3-year-old daughter with actress Michelle Williams.

Even before "The Dark Knight" was released last summer, fellow actors, movie critics and others were predicting, and endorsing, an Oscar nomination for his chilling portrayal. While "The Dark Knight" received mainly positive reviews, many critics concurred that Ledger gave the movie a jolt of malevolent energy whenever he materialized on screen. Los Angeles Times film critic Kenneth Turan praised what he described as a "shocking, indelible performance."

Oscar history suggests that Ledger's award was not merely sentimentally motivated. Only one other actor ever has been posthumously honored with an Academy Award: Peter Finch for "Network" in 1977.

But it's likely that at least some academy voters were honoring not only Ledger's work as the Joker but also the breadth of his accomplished, if tragically brief, career. "With this premier performance as well as with a wide range of other roles to which he put his unique signature, Heath Ledger has left us an original and enduring legacy," Kline said.

Over the last decade, Ledger demonstrated that he could handle comedy as well as serious dramatic roles in movies as varied as "10 Things I Hate About You" (1999), "The Patriot" (2000), "Monster's Ball" (2001) and "A Knight's Tale" (2001).

His career high point arguably was Ennis Del Mar, the emotionally terse ranch hand he played in Ang Lee's "Brokeback Mountain" (2005), for which he earned a lead actor Oscar nomination.

He had a tall assignment in interpreting the Joker, a character memorably incarnated by Jack Nicholson in Tim Burton's "Batman" in 1989. Nicholson's Joker is a witty, self-delighted clotheshorse, brimming with comic sang-froid.

Ledger's Joker is rawer and uglier, both physically and psychologically. Like Lon Chaney and other great monster men of the silver screen, Ledger conveyed a wrenching pathos lurking below the layers of makeup and venality.

In interviews, Ledger also acknowledged that filming "The Dark Knight" and another movie, "I'm Not There," had contributed to his ongoing bouts of insomnia.

Both in movie posters and in the minds of many viewers, the grotesquely smirking face of Ledger's Joker became the definitive image of the film. And, in one of those convergences of movies and real-world events, his nihilistic character spoke to the fears and uncertainties of a jittery time.

"See, I'm not a monster," Ledger's Joker tells Christian Bale's Batman during a brutal interrogation scene. "I'm just ahead of the curve."

There's a really nice tribute article and series of photos on the sky.com Oscars site:

He will be eternally missed, but he will never be forgotten

Christopher Nolan, accepting the Best Supporting Actor Golden Globe on Heath's behalf.

He was, as an actor and a professional and a human being, one of a kind

Charles Roven, accepting Heath's BAFTA.

This award tonight would have humbly validated Heath's quiet determination to be truly accepted by you all here — his peers within an industry he so loved.

You are welcome! :)

Some other news:

Quote
FOR Heath Ledger's family, life after the Oscars has been spent bonding with the late actor's three-year-old daughter Matilda and celebrating their late son's win with Hollywood friends at Johnny Depp's mansion.

Ledger's father Kim, mother Sally and sister Kate, who travelled from Perth for the ceremony, joined Matilda and the actor's former partner Michelle Williams at an afternoon party at Depp's Hollywood Hills home last week, along with industry friends.

The private event, which was guarded by security staff, was also attended by Ledger's step-parents, brother-in-law, step-sisters and nieces.

Depp had become friends with Ledger after Terry Gilliam, who directed the Oscar-winner in The Brothers Grimm, introduced the two actors at the Toronto Film Festival several years ago.

After Ledger's death in January last year, Depp and actors Jude Law and Colin Farrell stepped in to replace the Australian in his final unfinished film The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus.

Williams' partner Spike Jonze, who started dating her last year, did not attend the event. Williams, who split from Ledger shortly before his death, drove herself and Matilda to the party from Jonze's hilltop mansion in the trendy Los Angeles neighbourhood of Los Feliz.

The couple flew into Los Angeles with Matilda the day before the Oscars for Williams to attend the Independent Spirit Awards, where she was nominated for best lead actress for Wendy and Lucy.

On the morning of the Oscars, Williams and Jonze - whose real name is Adam Spiegel - ate breakfast at an upscale Beverly Hills eatery before shopping in a department store.

Ledger's family also enjoyed some shopping excursions in Los Angeles boutiques.

The group visited designer stores in Beverly Hills' famed Robertson Boulevard and Rodeo Drive, as well as upmarket outdoor shopping centre The Grove, where they wandered in the doll store American Girl.

The family is expected to return to Australia this week.

Matilda to get Heath Ledger's $15 million life insurance payout

14th March 2009, 9:00 WST

Heath Ledger's three-year-old daughter Matilda was officially named the sole benefactor of his life insurance policy on Friday after a Los Angeles court hearing.

After a 30-minute hearing, Matilda's custodian John Laviolette and lawyer William Shernoff emerged from Superior Court Judge Luis Lavin's chambers wearing smiles.

“It is finalised and everybody is mutually happy,” Laviolette told AAP.

Asked if the money would go to Matilda, Shernoff replied “Yes. Everyone is happy”.

Ledger took out the life insurance policy seven months before his naked body was found on January 22, 2008, in a Manhattan loft apartment he was renting.

He named Matilda as the benefactor.

Modest Mouse / Heath Ledger
Modest Mouse / Heath Ledger

Modest Mouse plans to release the music video actor Heath Ledger directed before his death in January 2008, the band's spokesperson tells SPIN.com. The Dark Knight actor helmed the animated clip for "King Rat," a bonus tune off 2007's We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank. No specific date has been set for the release, which is expected to happen "soon." The video was animated by Terry Gilliam (Twelve Monkeys, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas).

>> Review: We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank (Epic)
>> Modest Mouse Play Secret Show in Brooklyn
>> Listen: Modest Mouse's Tour Mates

In a 2007 interview with VH1 frontman Isaac Brock spoke about the collaboration with Ledger.

"Heath and I have a mutual friend and when we were in Australia, my fiancé and some of us in the band went out on a boat with him and his family and friends and talked about the idea," Brock said of the video's origin. "The idea sort of dropped, but then he just sent me an email saying that he wanted to do it."

In related Modest Mouse news, the Portland, OR, band will drop a 7" orange vinyl single April 18 (out digitally April 21) with two new songs, "Satellite Skin" (watch concert video below) and "Guilty Cocker Spaniels." Though the band hasn't confirmed any other releases, New Jersey record store Vintage Vinyl reports MM will offer three more singles before releasing an eight-song EP, No One’s First and You’re Next, this August.

Modest Mouse will perform "Satellite Skin" on the Late Show with David Letterman on March 18. Kevin Willis, who produced Tool's clip for "Stinkfist," will direct its music video.

The band's U.S. tour comes to a close this weekend. To read about and hear music from Mimicking Birds, the opener hand-picked by Brock, click here.

Ang Lee Remembers Heath Ledger

by Leilani Labong
posted March 10, 2009 11:36AM

Do you remember where you were when you got the news that Heath died?
I was landing at the Tokyo airport when I got an email from James. Heath died during my flight. That’s always strange to think about.

What is your favorite memory of him?
It also happens to be one of my favorite shots of my career: his “barfing” scene in Brokeback, when he was hitting the wall with his fists. We were on the third take, his fists were bleeding, he’d literally spilled all his guts, and something in the background struck me as being perfect. I think it was the clouds. I wanted to do another take, but Heath was totally exhausted. My producer said, “That’s bullshit. The actor has had enough.” But the clouds were perfect! We did another take, and after it was over, Heath said, “Wow. That felt good.”

I can't wait to see that video. I didn't know that Heath had been involved with another project with Terry Gilliam. Kind of makes me feel good considering how much he always said he admired Terry and would work with him anytime given the opportunity. :c) It'll be nice to see another of his video endeavors too. I wish there were more for us to enjoy.

I love that quote from Ang Lee. What a great moment. And it just goes to show that you never know which moments are going to stick with you or become important as you're stepping into them. It's only afterward that you can say "That was something special."  :)

An excerpt from an interview with Michael Caine, who played Alfred in TDK:

What did Heath Ledger's Best Actor win at the Oscars mean to you? And do you think it was something that was important for his legacy?

Oh, I thought it was very important for his family as well. I was a big fan of his from the first time I met him. I had never met him before, and I met him on the set where he invades our party we're having, and I'm standing by the lift and I expect to greet people, and all his gang's behind him...But before that, I had met [him], obviously, on the set, and we were chatting. He had this make-up on and I was saying how fantastic I thought it was. And we were just chatting quietly. And then they said, "We're ready to shoot." And I had never seen the performance. We were just talking, you know? And then he came out of the elevator, and I was absolutely stunned by that, the way he did it, and the energy that went into it. And then when I saw the movie...There's an opening monologue and a closing monologue that he does, which I thought, "If anybody's going to better that and get an Academy Award above him, I will pay good money to see that." And nobody did beat him. I'm so pleased.

Thanks, Keren. There is no end to the sorrow over the magic that we lost that January day. For someone to impress Michael Caine so much, an actor of immense abilities and talents in his own right, simply by chatting and then transforming into character at the drop of a line, delivering those amazing moments, with the tongue, the flick of the head and hair...Heath was just coming into his full abilities, finding his strides... :\'(

So true, so true...  I can picture those moments, Michael and Heath.  Wouldn't it have been quite interesting and odd to be talking to Heath in full Joker costume and makeup, but just chatting with him?  Just crazy and wonderful.

Doubtless,Heath was someone able to let a ineffaceable memory in anybody who met him.As Andrew has said, even an actor with some much experience in movie's world behind him as Michael Caine, got impressed by his talent and strength. It's a clear proof that everybody who loves cinema has had an enormous lost, both as person and as professional. :\'( Thank you,Keren, for sharing it with us¡.
Ennis’s eyes gone bright with shock, mouth opening then closing again. “Love?” Ennis said finally, voice strangling in his throat.

Jack smiled sad. “Yeah, Ennis. Love.” Leaned forward and kissed Ennis’s temple, whispered, “What’d you think it was, all this time?”

The Empire Awards Honor Heath Ledger

Sunday evening, 29th March 2009, Empire Magazine and Jameson Irish Whiskey held the annual Empire Awards.

The latest Batman film, The Dark Knight, received three prizes. Christopher Nolan and Christian Bale won best director and actor, while the movie won the title of best film.

Heath Ledger also received a special commemoration award for his life works at the ceremony in London.

Announcing the special tribute, the host said:

"In the last 12 months there have been many great films and great performances. But it was obvious that there was one role, one astonishing creation, that was the highlight of the year for many readers of Empire. Tragically the actor who delivered that performance, Heath Ledger, is no longer with us. His passing robbed the film world of a great young talent and his brilliant reimagining of the Joker is left as a testament to his powers and a poignant reminder of the loss. Who knows what great work was still to come? To mark this sad loss, Empire has dedicated a special tribute award to this fine actor, to acknowledge the outstanding work of Heath Ledger."

A video tribute was played in which Christian Bale and Christopher Nolan joined others paying tribute to Heath, after which the room broke out in cheers & applause.

The Empire Awards are voted for by readers of the monthly film magazine. None of the stars of The Dark Knight were able to attend, but both Nolan and Bale sent video messages.

"When you make a film like Dark Knight you really hope it reaches a lot of people, and Empire and its readers are really a great audience," said Nolan. "Thank you very much."

Thanks, Keren. I am glad for Christopher Nolan and Christian Bale. They have done a great job and their sense of loss, having known and worked with Heath so closely, must have been great and perhaps even devastating. Every time I see Christian Bale, he is always looking haunted and sad. I hope he finds a new project to take his mind off of Heath. It won't be easy, but a great actor like him will jump at a great role.

Reading the tribute still bring tears, after all this time. I expect the same will still be true years from now.
